Behold the last sight many a zooplankton ever see - the gaping maw of a filter feeder! Despite their reputation as gentle giants, manta rays are formidable feeders to some in the ocean’s ballet. With an appetite consuming an estimated 44-66 lbs (20-30 kg) of zooplankton daily, it’s a tough day to be tiny. 🫣 Showcasing its gill rakers, nature’s perfect sieve, designed to “rake” in microscopic meals while allowing water to flow over its gills for oxygen. Mantas are master diners, employing various techniques including surface, chain, piggyback, somersault, and cyclone feeding. As my good friend @beartiger aptly put it - and I’ll never forget - “They’re basically just swimming mouths” - and well, he’s not wrong. 🤣 So next time you’re enjoying a big meal, spare a thought for the little guys in the underwater food chain. Over the moon honored to have my photo chosen for the cover of this new field ID guide for manta & mobula species captured in Pacific Ocean fisheries. The intention of this 43-page guide is to help fishers and observers accurately identify incidentally caught mobula species, which is critical for better understanding species-specific interactions and ultimately inform fisheries management. Created by members of @sharktagger_hi @mantatrust and others with wildlife illustrator @marc.dando.92 , it has been recognized by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission as the best guide to currently exist for mantas and mobulas and is already being successfully used in Hawaii longline fisheries. 🐟 This was a heartbreaking encounter from a few years ago off the Baja peninsula. We went out searching for schools of mobulas (one of the region's spectacles) only to come across a gill net with several badly injured & already dead mobula rays entangled. My motives for photography are to tell stories & promote the conservation of our wild places and the incredible animals that inhabit them. So I'm beyond stoked that this photo is actively working to do just that. I call it "All Caught Up", highlighting how their presence in the future entirely depends on how we care for them in the present. 🧬 The first genetic study of manta rays in Hawaiʻi shows that reef mantas stay close to home. 🏠 Even though this species has been documented to travel hundreds of kilometers up and down coastlines, this study conducted around Hawaiʻi Island (Big Island) and Maui Nui reveals that each island harbors its own genetically unique and relatively small population of manta rays. Notably, female mantas display an extraordinary level of philopatry, rarely venturing from their birthplace, while males make inter-island migrations only once about every 64 years! Using genome scans, the researchers estimated the number of adult breeders in each population, an even smaller proportion of an already small population. Fascinating, yet alarming ‼️ As each population is demographically on its own, if one population declines, they are unlikely to be repopulated by neighboring islands. Even the loss of a single individual could have long term detrimental consequences to the resilience of reef manta rays in Hawaiʻi. Luckily, manta rays in Hawaiʻi are protected against being captured or directly killed, but they are not without their vulnerabilities here. Threats such as fishing line entanglement, boat strikes, and habitat degradation loom large. Given their slow growth and low reproduction rates, they need all the help they can get. utter magical chaos watching 30+ mantas fumble over each other as they zipped around scooping up as much of the zooplankton rich water as they could. I just sat there for the most part, observing & completely mesmerized by it all. But then after a while I decided to play a game of ‘how many mantas can I fit in one frame’ which was equally as chaotic, especially in the dark.
