Sometimes you stumble across Hifi related things when you least expect it. I went to @weltwirtschaft.berlin yesterday for a quick beer with @great_growers_of_bubbles and discovered these nicely made speakers hanging from the ceiling. Spherical horns and a veneer that screams "70s German studio speaker" - quite an eyecatcher and they fit the interior of the #hausderkulturenderwelt perfectly, imo. Unfortunately the friendly guy I spoke to didn't remember the manufacturer. If anyone on here is in the know, please drop a comment. I would love to know. He mentioned it was a custom job and a recent build. It's a 4-way setup, btw. - the subwoofer is not shown in the pictures. Dream Team: The Audio Note OTO Phono SE Signature integrated amplifier and the DAC 2.1x Signature. This combination produces a rich, punchy, yet nuanced sound. That being said, I believe that at its heart, the strong suit of this gear is its ability to evoke emotions. It (unlike the vast majority of stuff out there) manages to get the musical intent across. Because of this, it has the ability to hold its listeners captive. I believe a good friend of mine summarized it best when he said that “listening to [this system] renders background music a contradiction in terms”, and added “you’re forced to focus on nothing but the music”. This post is a post about my biggest oversights in this endeavour. The short story is: Imperial and metric threads don't mix. The long story involves the beloved and beautiful sounding #supertweeter, the #JBL2405h . Some of you may already guess where this is going... As you can see in my previous post, the cabinet of my #alteclansing inspired speaker was built with hidden threads for aesthetic reasons using metric threads: "Einschlagmuttern" and "Rampa-Muffen" in German - I think drive-in nut is the english equivalent. One thing I didn't realize when buying the 2405h: Its mounting plate has an imperial winding cut into it. As a result the metric screws that perfectly fit my hidden threads would not fit the mounting plate and vice versa. What to do? I wanted to keep the 2405 as original as possible and not alter it in a permanent way. I was almost ready to abandon the idea of a minimalist front baffle and ready to mount the 2405 the usual way: Through the baffle with visible screws from the front. But my carpenter insisted on another solution for this problem: He took one of the mounting plates and provided two exact wooden replicas of the mounting plates. Without threads! Cut from wood! They fit perfectly as you can see. I added some rubber gaskets to guarantee a complete seal and mounted them. So if you are attempting to build these - be smarter than me and use the fitting threads for each screw, plan ahead! Or just mount everything the old school way on the front baffle and call it a day. That's all. The Audio Note OTO Phono SE Signature amplifier using two EL84 output tubes per channel. This amplifier has been in continuous production since 1991. During this time it has been continuously refined, yielding the most recent incarnation of the design on display here. Plain and simple: I LOVE THIS THING. When taking price vs. performance under consideration, this integrated has very few competitors. Sure one can get more refinement at a (considerably) higher price, but this amp is so good at transporting emotions, that one (at least I) don‘t care. A friend of mine once described the OTO as having a „golden sound“. There is something to that, but I would not say that the OTO sounds colored. On the contrary: this integrated easily reveals differences in associated gear. Audio Note (UK) CDT-Two/ II CD Transport. For those that are in doubt: the quality of the transport does play a major role in the sound. The rest of the system needs to be on paar in order to reveal the transports sonic impact. In my current system the superiority of CD playback over streaming is undeniable. Music simply “flows” better. There is less digital glare and a general freedom of grain that lends a relaxing quality to the music that is missing with my other source. A few pics of the Audio Note Tomei Kensei 211 stereo power amplifier. I loved the amp. Hoping to be able to get one one permanent demo before too long. Pricey this thing is for sure and actually to big (both in terms of power as well as its size) for my rather smallish listening space. However, it still worked VERY well. Very fast and tight sounding. I remember listening to more electronic music when I had it here. The amp was a loaner together with an M6 pre amplifier. I now have an M8 and am curious what that combination will sound like.
