In the name of science I purchased over $200 worth of components to rebuild the crossover in my JBL Studio 630s. This mod was inspired by the dejitterit switchx. A friend had suggested I try modding the Mikrotik CRS309 switch / router myself and that it would be worthwhile even if some of the mods around clocking and tantalum caps were a bit obscure. I had struggled to get it working because I forgot I had disabled specific ports and the LEDs after shelving it for months. A simple reset restored functionality and let’s just say I’m absolutely thrilled now with the results. For those who are diy savvy this mod is totally worth it. I had to get DIY with these Seismic Audio cables so they would actually fit the RCA jacks on my vintage Voice of Music console amp. Even with the bulky gold collars unscrewed, the terminal rims (visible in pic 5) still bumped into each other. I had to grind this rim down (pic 6) to achieve the desired circumference (pic 7). I then used a Dremel to cut off the bulky gold collars (pic 8). Finally, I made things pretty with a bit of heat shrink tubing. All in all, this was a quick little 1 hour project. The cables fit perfectly now. I've built this 1176 clone from @hairballaudio and it is goooooood!!! To my amazement, it fired up and worked first time 😮 The first step is to build and test the power supply without killing yourself ⚡ Capacitors are most likely to fail (by which I mean, explode) when they are first sent voltage. So I checked everything one last time, applied 240v, stood at arms length, held my breath, turned it on and stepped away. I've built things before but there's nothing like plugging in your own handiwork to the mains! 💩 Happily, nothing bad happened. That would've been The Most Dave death imaginable 😂 Then it was time to solder over a hundred small components to the PCBs. I'm colour blind and poorly sighted so I used my DMM and a magnifying glass to check all values. Absolutely no chance reading the colour stripes on the resistors or the tiny ceramic cap values!! After all soldering & final assembly I took some time to clean the flux off the boards, then moved to calibration. I bought this mostly for tracking, but A-B'ing it with plugins it is like night and day. Hugely superior sound to the software emulations so I'm gonna be using it on EVerything for the foreseeable Highly recommend this kit, it's really high quality, very straightforward to build and the instructions are perfect.
