Continuing onto the brag-fest from yesterday, I’m sharing today another ten artists with whom I had the pleasure of working in the past and whose works were gracing the walls at @artbasel HK 2024. It’s such a “pat on the shoulder” type of a moment to see them in this environment, so please let me bask in it for a little longer... • A few years back, I helped organize a small presentation of #LukasLuziuLeichtle’s Cauliflower ear-themed presentation, so I was so pleased to see this series of work getting a spotlight at the @whitespacebeijing’s booth. This work blew me away in particular, showing the artist’s incredible ability to convey an almost tactile quality of the surfaces he is depicting, especially different types of skins and the way they’re getting affected by the light (I wish I could fit some closeups in this carousel). Over at @galerieursmeileofficial, #MiaoMiao had a solo corner with some smaller paintings and life scale or small scale folding screen pieces, and #OliviaSterling had this small unmistakeable work nicely showcased at @meyerriegger’s booth alongside some of the German gallery’s biggest names. • A few galleries had some great examples of #YuichiHirako’s vision of harmony between humans and nature, domesticity and wildlife, and this sculpture and painting combo at @themoderninstitute provided a nice overview of the extent of his practice. Not far from there, #HildaPalafox had new works on view w @_monclova, and I’m a big fan of the way her figures and their scenery keep evolving, as Im a fan of seeing the quirky scenes coming from the mind and brush of #PowMartinez (such as this work from @silverlensgallery’s presentation). Over at @alminerech booth, I found this iconic tondo by #RobyDwiAntono “hiding” in a closed section while these “self watering flowers” by #TimothyCurtis were on display on the main wall. Finally, I was glad to see the mind-bending technique through which @paceprints transformed #JoseLerma’s heavy-weight impasto into a paper edition and to see #AndrewSchoultz’s latest hand painted edition on display at the same booth.

Last week we had the pleasure of attending the 20th iteration of Zona Maco in Mexico City. With @artbasel Miami in full swing, I've been following the posts and stories from home and genuinely getting goosebumps as I see so many familiar names now showing on the big stage. This is a bit of shameless self-promotion, but it feels so damn good to see people that I had the pleasure of including in shows I curated over the years, now making big moves. • We have #HildaPalafox, who was part of the Flats show back in 2019, now showing w @_monclova, or #AlyHelyer, who went from being part of Melancholympics in 2020 to being part of the @vielmetter’s impressive Basel lineup. Part of Melancholympics but also Domesticity in 2021, #MattBollinger is now a regular w @motherstankstation as is #JasonBoydKinsella with @perrotin after being part of Universes 4 in Paris in 2021. #OlivaSterling, who was part of that same show but also the current Rose-Tinted Glasses in London, is back in Miami w @meyerriegger and #AnnaPark, who was in Universes 2 in 2019, is continuously crushing it w @blumandpoe. #MieYim recently took part in the Polyeality in Bejing and is now at Basel with @simonesubalgallery, while good friends #RaymondLemstra and #JangKoal (both part of 2020 Universes 3 in HK), are now showing w other friends, @nanzukaunderground! And this is only Art Basel I'm talking about, with Untitled and NADA and others including many other queens and kings making their way towards the big papa fair and beyond. Congrats to all of you massive legends! • And this whole thing made me realize how much I enjoy my position and the dynamics of the "field" I'm "operating" in. I frequently hear people (mostly gallerists, but also collectors and curators) complain about artists moving to "greener pastures," but I feel genuinely happy for these queens and kings to be where they are. Sure, this might mean that chances of us working again are getting slimmer, but I can totally live w the fact that I was a little part of their story and can always pop by their studios and see what they're cooking. And that feels SO GOOD! In the meantime, there is always a constant stream of fresh new names and works coming in, all in dire need of that moment in the spotlight. So bring it on!
First pass at a preview of @artbasel Miami and I find myself noting that the warmth of yellow and gold seems to thread quite a few works throughout the fair. Nació en la Ciudad de México en 1985 y, actualmente, vive y reside en su ciudad natal. Se formó como diseñadora gráfica por parte de la Escuela de Diseño del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (EDINBA), carrera que la fue llevando, poco a poco a dedicarse a la ilustración para convertirla en una artista multidisciplinaria. Su obra rinde homenaje en técnica ante el Muralismo Mexicano del siglo XX con sus formatos monumentales en espacios públicos en México, Estados Unidos, Brasil y otras partes del mundo, utilizando el cuerpo femenino como símbolo de protesta ante los roles de género impuestos y como cuestionamiento ante “aquello que es la feminidad”, al mismo tiempo que proyecta la intimidad e introspección de cada una de sus personajes. Hilda Palafox paints female figures carrying out certain activities that allow them to find themselves in ambiguous scenarios where time stands still and the horizon limits or expands physical and mental space. The pieces that make up the exhibition allow us to recognize in the artist's composition, a part of the Latin American pictorial production of the last century in which the material exploration and the formal search stand out, stemming from a praise of the human body as a central figure and an emphasis on volume in painting and sculpture.
