My dad gave me this diamond necklace for Christmas when I was in 9th grade and I never wore it because I just wasn’t a necklace kinda girl. He passed in 2017 and his birthday is in April. This month, for some reason, I remembered the necklace. I’ve worn it everyday since. What a sweet feeling to feel like I got a gift from my dad all these years later. A friend told me - you’ll never regret any time you spend with your parents. It’s true. A lot of my closest friends are going through those challenging times caring for parents and being needed in big ways … there’s a lot of feelings that go along with that. It’s draining and stressful … and meaningful. To anyone in this spot, I’ve been there … felt the weight of it, the guilt of not doing enough and the stress of juggling my life commitments with what is needed at home. You’ll get through it. The way you show up now will help you grieve later. When I think of both my parents … yes I miss them and wish I could call them … but I’m so damn grateful for the memories. If my sarcasm post hit kind of hard, here's an alternative. I mentioned how sarcasm comes from the Greek "to tear the flesh." Ouch. Your words can wound. Your words can be a means of grace, mercy, healing, life, peace. But it takes some courage. At the risk of sounding cheesy...it takes courage to encourage. We're often sarcastic from fear. We encourage from love. Encouragement is also a charism. The word "encourage" comes from the same Greek word for "counselor" - "to be called beside" or "stand beside." Here is a prayer you can borrow. It is a prayer I'm praying for you and for me. It is a prayer of rejoicing. It is a prayer of remembrance. It is a prayer of redemption. It is a prayer of rescue. There is room, even today, even still. Lord, today I want to celebrate the room I have in You to move and breathe and wonder and wander. You have kept me from being conquered by my enemy; you broke open the way to bring me to freedom, into a beautiful, broad place. You liberated me and made me secure in a good and spacious land. You have set my feet in a large place. You have set my feet in a broad place. You have set my feet in a wide place, wide-open spaces, a safe place. You gave me room to breathe. Today, I want to see how room in You creates room in me for for others to find room in You. "Step inside. Step inside. It is spacious here.” Today, let me not grow weary when others ache or stumble or wonder or wander. Let me not scream over Your invitation or say there is no welcome. Instead, let me make room.
