Y’all probably remember the image of DJ Kool Herc’s back-to-school party flyer circulating on Instagram during Hiphop’s 50th Birthday (swipe left). The date of this party was August 11th, 1973. Grandmaster Flowers from Farragut Houses, Brooklyn. A substantial part of Hip Hop Culture is related to territorialism which originated in the past gangs’ fights. It „was initially used (…) to make turf, and later became an artists’ war on the establishment” (Hess 2009: 7-8). Upon members used various symbols and numbers to affiliate to their origins and emphasised involvement in the community. Graffiti artists began to use this medium not to vandalise but to show a place for their expressions in the urban environment. Nonetheless, other genres such as rock, R&B, or blues referenced regional locations, but Hip-Hop hyperbolised it by using NYCHA schemes, street, or even specific addresses in lyrics (Norman 1997: 3). The same was related to the samples (songs used to be mixed by DJs), mainly from the New York surroundings and included genres such as Disco or Jazz. Accordingly, they double-coded modern resources and techniques with their living place that allowed them to respond to local context and societies. It resembles the thoughts of postmodern philosophers such as Charles Jencks - double-coding (1971), Harwell Harris - Regionalism of Liberation (1965) or Kenneth Frampton - Critical Regionalism (1983), who demonstrated the importance of communication with concerned minorities and „deconstruction” of cultural belief to oppose the global identification. Therefore, Hip-Hop artists contributed to the criticism of universal civilisation from the social perspective, not the architectural one.
