Today marks exactly 47 years since Elvis performed at the Milwaukee Arena. However, the nearly 12,000 spectators in the audience on April 27, 1977, witnessed an Elvis who was far from his heyday. As usual, the female part of the audience screamed hoarse as soon as Elvis appeared on stage, all while he handed out scarves at a rapid pace. According to Larry Geller, the fans were like mad, beyond the usual confusion and hysteria. Damien Jaques’ review in The Milwaukee Journal the next day testified that it was sadly obvious that something was amiss. Jaques described Elvis’s performance as half-hearted, if not unworthy of an entertainer of Elvis’s stature. Forgotten lyrics, weak voice, and mumbling banter are just a sample of the criticism. Jaques also labeled Elvis pulling out the lyrics to read before performing ”My Way” as the evening’s biggest insult to the audience, stating that the audience had every right to feel cheated; they deserved better. When Elvis received the final applause and walked from one side of the stage to the other, kissing girls, children, and old ladies, shaking hands with people, and receiving flowers, Elvis’s entourage stood below the stage holding back the crowd, ensuring nobody could break through and climb onto the stage. Elvis seemed lost, as if he couldn’t see properly and stumbled, spraining his foot, as he tried to descend the few steps and reach the awaiting limousine. Guards rushed forward to help him, while Elvis’s crew, along with local and hired policemen, prevented a riot. Elvis limped into the limousine, which promptly drove off with a string of squealing fans in its wake. The Notorious Byrd Brothers is the winner of this week's album cover contest. Released in january 1968 on Columbia Records, it was the fifth album of the American folk group. On the record sleeve we see an old stone house or stable in the Topanga Canyon in California. Peeking through the windows are three byrds and a horse. From left to right: Chris Hillman, Roger McGuinn and Michael Clarke. The noticeably absent band member was David Crosby, who had been fired from the band several months before this photoshoot. Rising tensions within the group concerning their music and performing led to the end of the Byrds as a quartet. Other photos were taken that day, including of band members riding on horseback. The horse peeked through the window, which was a spur-of-the-moment decision made by photographer Guy Webster (4) 'to provide better compositional balance.' Guy Webster (4) (1939-2019) was an American photographer who played an important role in the development of rock 'n' roll photography (5). In his fifty-year career (!) he was active in both the music, film and politics scene. Later he recalled the following: "So I found this abandoned barn with four open windows. There was a horse in the field. I put each one of the guys in the windows. And in the last window I put the horse. I was mistakenly accused of denigrating David Crosby. It wasn't to replace Crosby, who had been fired; it wasn't to insult anyone. It was just to balance the composition. OTD in Music History: Composer, conductor, and pianist Sergei Prokofiev (1891 - 1953) is born in what is now Ukraine. Prokofiev's amazingly charmed early life in Imperial Russia was almost a mirror image of his final miserable years, which were spent suffering under Stalin's repressive Soviet regime. Sergei Taneyev (1856 - 1915) arranged for the young prodigy to spend the Summer of 1902 studying privately with Reinhold Gliere (1875 - 1956). Further lessons with Gliere followed the next year, and then in 1904 Prokofiev traveled with his mother to St. Petersburg to meet with Alexander Glazunov (1865 - 1936), who was then a professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Glazunov urged Prokofiev's mother enroll Prokofiev at the Conservatory right away, even though he was still several years younger than most of his classmates. She accepted this invitation – and thus Prokofiev found himself studying harmony and composition with Anatoly Lyadov (1855 - 1914), conducting with Nikolai Tcherepnin (1873 - 1945), and orchestration with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844 - 1908). Prokofiev ultimately finished his years of schooling by jumping into the fray of the so-called "Battle of The Pianos": a cutthroat competition open to the five best piano students at the Conservatory for which the grand prize was a beautiful new grand piano. Prokofiev won by performing *his own* recently composed "1st Piano Concerto." Soon thereafter, Prokofiev traveled to London, where his nascent professional career was given yet another boost by legendary impresario Sergei Diaghilev (1872 - 1929) and his famous "Ballets Russes"… PICTURED: An intense portrait photo showing the middle-aged Prokofiev, which he signed and inscribed to a fan during his third concert tour of America in 1930. That fan, Paul Zaichenko (1873 - 1961), was a professor at the Chicago Music Conservatory as well as the first Choir Director at St. Mary’s Orthodox Church in Minneapolis (1891 - 1903). This is the pavilion in London where Handel's "Music for the Royal Fireworks" premiered 275 years ago today. Handel was hired by George II to compose music for the fireworks show celebrating the 1748 signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle and the end of the War of the Austrian Succession. The celebration was a disaster. The weather was cold and rainy, and the audience was probably miserable from the beginning. Then, mid-show, several fireworks misfired and set part of the pavilion on fire. ¡TchKung! - Dogs & Gears ¡Tchkung! was an American band from Seattle, Washington, United States, who blended guerrilla theater, "tribal" drumming, and punk ethics. Their live performances included multiple drummers, violin, didgeridoo, and electric bass, all played to fire breathers and fire eaters, body piercing, and other theatrical scenes. Often compared to Crash Worship, or Crass, the band has been described as "industrial", though "post-industrial" might be more accurate. The band became well known for the conclusions of their shows, which occasionally ended in police raids (such as in Eugene), riots (particularly Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival in 1994,) and street parades in which audience members were encouraged to participate. After the break-up of the band, members (including Wilson and Filastine) went on to form the political marching band Infernal Noise Brigade. Bing came to San Francisco in mid September 1951. His youngest son Lindsay entered high school in Los Angeles (unlike his older brothers, who studied at Bellarmine Academy in San Jose). Dennis and Phil started their last high school year and Gary entered Stanford University. Although Bing supported Gary in his wish to be a singer, he insisted that Gary should still get his university education first. Work on several radio programs followed in the next days. Bing's show on September 21 took place at the Marine Memorial Theater in San Francisco. Afterwards, Bing and Gary went to Santa Clara's Townsend Field to watch Phil's and Dennis's high school ball team win against Monterey High. Bing recorded another episode for his radio show, with Jane Wyman and Hoagy Carmichael, at Alameda's US Naval Air Station. Back in San Francisco on September 25, Bing, Gary, Dennis and Phil did a special broadcast, the "Youth Crusade with the Crosbys". It was part of the Crusade for Freedom campaign, which pointed out the downsides of communism behind the Iron Curtain. The program also included an appeal to donate for constructing and organizing the new Radio Free Europe Station that would broadcast Western viewpoints for the UdSSR. Bing and his boys were photographed signing a Freedom Scroll that day (6). Despite Bing’s occasional participation in similar campaigns in the late 40s/early 50s, he was absolutely against the HUAC witch hunt that was conducted in the US. Bing always had respect for other people's political opinions. Unbeknownst at the time, the CIA used the campaign to cover up its own funding of the radio station with the intention to broadcast US propaganda in favor of the West. On September 27, Bing joined Jane Russell as guest stars on Bob Hope's radio show at Long Beach Naval Base (1-5). Two days later, Bing and Dixie celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary. Bing gave her 9 custom-made gowns as a present and took her out to the Cocoanut Grove. Having had struggled a few years prior, their relationship had returned to an all-time high. Back in LA in October, Bing did three fascinating commercial recording sessions, including Christmas songs and French tunes.

1984: NOIZECLOT “Music For T*rture, Bondage & Leather S*x” 1984 cassette. Catalogue number XXX-10. Another side project of SLEEPCHAMBER @anubusmaximus ‘s JOHN ZEWIZZ @oizrexsin23 , NOIZECLOT was a short-lived project that mainly utilized distorted tapes and noise instead of traditional instruments. But this was in-itself a tradition for this groundbreaking underground sound we were perpetrating at the time. The members listed in liner notes and literature other than JZ were “Andrew Barry”, “Graymen Carrol” and “Sue Zan” - which Zewizz later admitted were completely made up characters. According to us at the label, NOIZECLOT was “pure noise, control of distortion and extreme sound. Antisocial music for those who have other interests, other than what the masses are interested in”. NOIZECLOT released 3 cassettes total (4, if you count BLOODCLOT, which is a collaboration under this name with the legendary CONTROLLED BLEEDING, who will also be covered on this page in the future). This first tape’s initial edition came with a 2-color cover, limited to only 500 copies. Later copies were made available with a xeroxed cover on dark pink paper. A small clip of the “Bondage (Sound For)” can be heard in the 3rd slide. Es en la escuela donde conoce a quien va a ser su mejor amigo: José Luis Rodríguez «El Puma», con quien va a formar, además de otras amistades, su primer conjunto denominado "Canaima" que estaba destinado a tocar en fiestas y reuniones. Inicia su formación musical estudiando solfeo, trombón y piano en la escuela «José Ángel Lamas». Canta en el programa televisivo «Club del Twist» y luego integra el conjunto de Chelique Sarabia con quien se inicia en la televisión, logrando presentarse en los programas de variedades más conocidos de ese momento entre ellos los conducidos por el músico y compositor Aldemaro Romero, el presentador Alfredo Ledezma y el también productor televisivo Renny Ottolina. En 1962, conoce a quien sería su primera esposa, Belkys Montero y luego de dos años de noviazgo tiene a su único hijo José Enrique. Sin embargo sus constantes viajes y compromisos artísticos hicieron que esta relación se deteriorara hasta llegar a la separación. Dedicado por entero a su carrera, aunque ya empezaba a ser reconocido, no daba el paso definitivo para convertirse en solista. A raíz de sus presentaciones en el espacio «Cada minuto una estrella» dirigido por el propio Sarabia, este último logra interesar al empresario y músico Renato Capriles para que integre la plantilla de su orquesta "Los Melódicos", en 1966 con la cual grabó algunos temas sencillos en 45 rpm y un disco LP. April 27, 1974 - “I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song” by Jim Croce peaked at No.9 on the Hot 100 becoming his fifth and final top 10 hit. The song went to No.1 on the Adult Contemporary chart and reached No.68 on the Billboard Country chart, Croce’s only song to chart there. The song was a posthumously released single. Croce was killed in a small-plane crash in September 1973, the same week that a 45RPM single, the title cut from his studio album I Got a Name was released. After the delayed release of a song from his previous album (“Time in a Bottle”) in late 1973, “I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song” was chosen as the second single released from his final studio album. Ingrid Croce wrote an autobiographical cookbook, Thyme in a Bottle, in which she includes interesting anecdotes about Jim. She wrote the following about “I’ll Have To Say ‘I Love You’ in a Song”: - One weekend, after being on the road for many months, Jim got a chance to come home to relax with his family. We settled in to enjoy our time alone together. Though Jim was expecting company the next day, avoiding confrontation he never told me that we were to be joined by an entire film crew! The next morning, 15 people from Acorn Productions descended upon our house to record a promotional film of Jim Croce at Home on the Farm. I prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner for the whole film crew and after the group left, I questioned Jim about our finances. After a year and a half of his working so very hard on the road, we were barely making ends meet, but Jim wouldn’t talk about it. He hated questions as much as he hated confrontation, especially about money. He stormed out of our bedroom and went down to the kitchen table to brood. The next morning he woke me gently by singing his new song. “Every time I tried to tell you the words just came out wrong. He met them and had a ball, but one boy was shy and withdrawn. So Bowie asked the organizers of the event if he could talk to the boy by himself, seeing as though he was “so shy." The kid wasn’t actually shy — he was autistic. Bowie told the kid he was also scared, too, of everything. He was, in fact, only able to face other people because of a “magic mask” he would always wear. It just so happened the mask was ‘invisible.’ He gave it to the boy. He then acted rather distressed himself and had to make another magic mask, after which he became calm, too. Bowie and the kid just hung out for thirty minutes, and it was a magical experience. The boy later said he actually felt more confident after meeting David Bowie and receiving his “magic mask." Bowie reminded the boy of how ‘everyone is shy and scared sometimes, and we all wear masks’. Not every celebrity as famous as Bowie would take so much time and go through such effort to put an uncomfortable kid at ease at an event.

Effettivamente il testo in questione è molto evangelico (ovviamente il termine gospel sta a significare proprio vangelo). 👉🏻👉🏻Anche se nel nostro Belpaese tale canzone viene usata per salutare il nuovo anno [e la cosa mi è un po' misterica per me] nelle chiese riformate essa viene cantata per i battesimi, per la confermazione ed anche per i funerali. OTD in Music History: Composer and organist Olivier Messiaen (1908 - 1992) dies in France. One of the foremost avant garde 20th Century composers, in his later years Messiaen drew inspiration from such eclectic sources as transcribed bird songs, Eastern modalities, and his own deep sense of Catholic mysticism. As a boy, Messiaen entered the famed Paris Conservatoire where he studied with Charles-Marie Widor (1844 - 1937), Paul Dukas (1865 - 1935), and Marcel Dupre (1886 - 1971), among others. After his graduation, Messiaen was appointed chief organist at the Eglise de la Sainte-Trinite Cathedral in Paris, and he held that post for more than 60 years. He also taught at the "Schola Cantorum" during the 1930s. Following the fall of France to Germany in 1940, however, Messiaen found himself interned for nine months in a German prisoner of war camp; this is where he composed perhaps his single most famous piece, the "Quatuor pour la fin du temps" ("Quartet for The End of Time"). This Quartet was written for the only four instruments that he had at his disposal in the prison -- piano, violin, cello, and clarinet -- and it was actually premiered by Messiaen and his fellow prisoners for a mixed audience which consisted of both inmates and prison guards. After his release from the camp in 1941, Messiaen was appointed to a full professorship at the Paris Conservatoire. His students there included fellow noted modernist composers Iannis Xenakis (1921 - 2001), Pierre Boulez (1925 - 2016), and Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928 - 2007).
