Low Roar - Low Roar This is a flawless album to me from start to finish and the album that made me fall in love with Low Roar. This album hits on late, sleepless nights and you can just feel the isolation and loneliness that surrounds this album with the frontman’s, Ryan Karazija, move to Iceland and finding his way around life within that. This album is just beautiful and guitar tone throughout the album is just breathtaking especially on tracks like Help Me, Rolling Over, and Just a Habit. The opening track of Give Up feels very hopeful but as soon as the lyrics began to be sung, you can just feel the hopelessness settle in and that Carrie’s over to the closing track of Tonight, Tonight, Tonight where you hear this more experimental sound with electronics mixed and layered with heavy strings throughout the track. I’m not going to gush about every single thing I love about this album, but just know to me this is a perfect album and has helped me through some very tough times in my life. RIP Ryan, I’m glad I was on the journey of Low Roar with you until the end and thank you for touching my life. “I’m helpless and hopeful to remain so You’re reckless and ready to have a go The silence sent a scream into the cold I’m pessimistic even though I hope, I hope”

真不敢相信我竟然遺忘了THE NOVEMBERS的新專輯！ 《THE NOVEMBERS》是樂隊的第二張同名專輯，第一張是他們的出道EP，距今17年前的作品。為甚麼十多年後他們又以自己的樂隊名命名新專輯？按主音小林祐介的說法，就是「不想以一個特定的主題去宣告某件事，或特顯自己做了甚麼，而是想向大家傳達『我們在這裡』」。對，還有甚麼名稱比這更直接呢？在音樂旅途上多重進化的THE NOVEMBERS，以最適合於現在的他們的狀態，站在這裡。當你聽完整張專輯，就會明白為甚麼他們不只一次強調，這是一張凝聚了現在的他們的專輯。（「今の僕たちが凝縮されたロックアルバム。」） 專輯以充滿爆發力和疾走感的「BOY」揭開序幕，這種開頭在THE NOVEMBERS的專輯來說實屬少見，他們一向不然用溫暖而緩慢的曲子開頭（像「Hallelujah」），不然就用深沉而神秘的歌曲起首（像「TOKYO」），一開始聽到「BOY」這種有力量的作品，感覺新鮮；聯同歌詞「今夜 生まれ変わる 僕ら 生まれ変わる」，像在開宗明義宣告甚麼轉變，新的THE NOVEMBERS即將誕生，大家即管走著瞧。 可是繼續聽下去，又會發現雖然「新的」THE NOVEMBERS已經誕生，但舊有熟悉的一面仍完完整整地得以保留。整張專輯裡面，每一首歌都很面善，每一首歌都好像曾經出現過，差不多可以relate到從前哪些曲子，但又總是說不出名字。「Seaside」有THE NOVEMBERS偏開朗的作品中一貫輕盈、颯爽的感覺；「誰も知らない」一個轉身又讓大家聽見了能以重型和爆音取勝的THE NOVEMBERS，還記得EP《Fourth Wall》、歌曲「黒い虹」的他們嗎？但「誰も知らない」副歌部份的開揚感卻是從前的暗黑作品沒有的，十分討喜。（而高松的bassline也竟讓我想起MUSE的「Hysteria」）。然後來到「かたちあるもの、ぼくらをたばねて」又再轉身，又變回了能安撫心情的他們，像一雙溫柔的手，輕輕地把你的心環抱；末段的色士風伴奏令歌曲更顯輕鬆。這種如像變臉戲法的歌曲編排，究竟是誰想出來？但小林說他們就沒有很刻意安排，此張專輯的製作過程，就是盡量「隨意」。另外，值得一提的是，這首歌同時在表達樂隊一直以來走過的路、所創造出來的一切「有形之物」，也包括樂迷，正在實實在在地支撐着他們。 來到第5曲「November」，沒錯又是同名，這是因為製作這歌的過程讓小林覺得好像看了一齣反映了THE NOVEMBERS多年來歷程的電影，所以就起用了這個歌名。確實，此曲沉實而安穩的起承轉合，的確像一個漫長而有意思的故事，值得慢慢細味。接著的「Game」和「James Dean」，曲風又一轉再轉。「Game」歌如其名，充滿玩味，讓人忍不住想扭動身體，盡情跳舞享樂。「James Dean」則像極70年代歐美Synth pop音樂，是THE NOVEMBERS從未玩過的風格，輕快爽朗，現場演出的話氣氛必定十分歡樂。「Game」和「James Dean」都是THE NOVEMBERS的新嘗試。 「Cashmere」一聽就知道是出自bass手高松浩史手筆，跟舊作「plastic」有異曲同工之妙（只是不知道他是否又在醉酒之後創作出那條猶如蛇身扭動的bassline）。「Morning Sun」也名副其實地如像和煦的陽光，溫暖大家的心靈。而專輯也進入尾聲，最後一曲「抱き合うように」讓我想起了很久以前的作品「夢のあと」所帶給我的圓滿與感動。 THE NOVEMBERS四人一起走過接近17個年頭，由緊密活動到各有自己的project，例如跟別的音樂人組團，或做幕後，甚至參演電影也好，即使有了這麼多方面的工作，但他們還是不忘自己的原點，把在外面學到的、獲得到的，以一種正面的、歡喜的心情，嘗試放進THE NOVEMBERS的音樂裡，讓樂隊變得更好。猶如小林祐介在每場Live最後必說的一句話：「いい未来で会いましょう」，在美好的未來相遇，他們一直創造出一個又一個美好的未來。而來到現在，他們將眼光放在更遠大的未來，「もっといい景色を見たいんだよ！」、「みんなで一緒にすごく大きな船で夢みたいな場所に行けたらいいな」，他們如是說。現在抱著這種想法的他們，想必還能更上一層樓，在仍能保持鬆容不迫的狀態之下，與樂迷們一起到達更高處，欣賞更美的風景。 #THENOVEMBERS #ザノーベンバーズ #ノーベンバーズ #Selftitledalbum #selftitled #album #CD #newrelease #アルバム #alternative #rock #music #band #Japaneseband #Japanesemusic #recommended #音楽 #音樂 #邦楽 #邦ロック #バンド #日本音樂 #日本樂隊 #オススメ #いい未来で会いましょう

Today’s haul: Two cassettes — “Greatest Hits! of Tatsuro Yamashita” by Tatsuro Yamashita, and “The Slide Area” by Ry Cooder; and Seven CDs — “Neil Young” by Neil Young, “The Graduate” by Simon & Garfunkel, “Sketches of Spain” and “Miles in Tokyo” by Miles Davis, “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye, “Madvillainy” by Madvillain, and “Fleet Foxes” by Fleet Foxes Greetings from Osaka! This leg of the trip/vacation yielded this haul. I skipped the Tower Records here and went instead to Disk Union in Osaka’s Umeda District. It’s a smaller shop with a homier, more “indie” vibe compared to Tower Records, which I admit, can seem “corporate” and a bit “brutalist.” No special section/rack dedicated to the latest T-Swizzle release in Disk Union, if that’s any indication. 😅 Quite happy with the stuff I got — some are old favorites that I’ve never seen physical editions of. And apart from the Tatsuro Yamashita tape and the Madvillain CD, all of these are used, but remain in excellent condition. 👍🏼 Thanks to my lovely wife for taking that photo of “me” with the Miles Davis albums (Slide 2). ❤️ I had wanted to get albums by the Japanese folk singer Tsunekichi Suzuki on this trip. Like his country, there’s just a calming quality in Suzuki’s music — like Leonard Cohen but even more zen. But alas, his albums are out of stock in both Tower and Disk Union. Here’s hoping that there will still be a next time.
