The hive was overflowing today. The girls had built extra comb and filled with honey on top of the super. I got the mess cleaned up, added another super so they can continue moving up. This hive has become a monster! After going through a queen-less period, it appears they have become queen-right. We were able to find signs of a laying queen, but as you can imagine with this many bees, it was difficult to find the one (the Queen). We recently added another box to give extra space and to relief overcrowding…and to try and prevent them from swarming. The workshop will be delivered by Anthony Nea @ringfort_farm a highly experienced beekeeper. Anthony has been keeping bees for over 15 years and now has over 40 colonies. He places great emphasis and is a strong believer on the value of doing and hands-on practical experience. Everyone will be suited and kitted out. There will be plenty of opportunity to work with the bees. A bee suit will be provided if required but we do advise to bring your own suitable footwear. This practical hive inspection and maintenance workshop will provide you with the knowledge, the confidence and the practical skills that are necessary to keep bees and have the joy of your own honey. You will discover all you need to know about safe and successful beekeeping. This one day workshop is a natural follow on for those who completed the theoretical beginner Workshop in March but it is also suitable for anyone who already keep bees but would like some more assistance and practical experience. Most of this workshop will be spent out with the bees. Everyone will have the opportunity to read the honey comb and handle the hive. Everyone must be appropriately dressed with good closed footwear. No sandals please! There will be a lot of information shared and a lot to absorb but there is no better way to learn than to actually do and see first hand. A two course lunch, glass of bubbly teas and coffees are all included. All equipment and suits are also provided. If you do have your own bee suit and gloves it is best to use it. Spring Hive Inspection Day is always a little nerve-wracking. More often than not, a hive can be lost in these last few weeks before spring nectar flow starts. A colony that was strong in the fall very may well have eaten through all of their feed stores and can be lost to starvation. While the overnight temps are still cool enough to the hives are still winter wrapped, these warm spring days lend themselves nicely to a hive inspection. @jovimiru, Lennon, and I suited up and took advantage of the perfect day. We found a STRONG colony, a steady stream of forager bees coming back to the hive with saddle bags full of pollen and larvae in all stages of development from fresh eggs to capped larvae, soon ready to hatch! We scooped up half a cup of bees for a mite check, and we're pleased to find no presence of varroa mite. The feed stores were definitely lacking, so we left them with a jar of honey and will keep feed available to them until the dandelions arrive. Well, this is a first. 🤦🏼♂️ This is Swarm No. 3 that we caught in March 27 from one of our pines within 20 feet from our bee yard. We got them transferred into this double Nuc box that day and slowing moved them about five feet every few days over the next week until they were on the hive stand. We intentionally left them alone for two weeks so they could settle in and draw out plenty of comb…and they sure did. We still can’t believe that we forgot to add five deep frames to the bottom box. However, it’s now all doom and gloom. How it started and how it ended. 😂🤪 Witnessed some scout bees checking out this trap around 1:30pm and got to see Swarm No. 5 move into the swarm trap around 3:15pm. This is also only the second time we’ve seen a swarm choose to cluster on the outside of the swarm trap versus move into the trap. Can you see the queen’s eggs? Beekeeping season is finally here 🤩 From now until mid-fall, we’ll inspect each of our hives every 2-3 weeks. One of the things we check for during these inspections is that the colony has a functioning queen. The queen is responsible for laying all the eggs in the hive, so the colony simply cannot survive long term without her! 🐝🐝🐝 One obvious way to know a colony has a queen bee is to find her. But since there are ten of thousands of bees in a colony, finding her can be an onerous task! Another way to know the colony has a functioning queen is to see her eggs in the honeycomb cells. When a queen lays an egg, it remains an egg for 3 days before developing into a larvae. Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em! Enjoyed the recent warm weather and got into the hives for the first time since February 10. Yep, that’s right, we went 49 days between hive inspections. We decided to do this for a few reasons. Mainly, we didn’t want to disturb and disrupt the colonies while there was still cold fronts in our forecast. We understand the calculated risk we took regarding the potential of having colonies swarm but decided that trying something new was worth it. We have also caught three swarms since mid-March. At least one had a marked queen which means that swarm could have been one of ours. TBD in the other two. In just 4 days, this swarm colony had built complete comb on both sides of a deep frame and filled it with honey! They’d begun building comb on two more frames also, and on the second-hand comb I gave them, the Queen had laid lots of eggs and they’d packed the surrounding cells with pollen. It looks like the Green Trap may have caught our first swarm Sunday is when we first noticed some scout bees on this trap. The activity level continued to be about the same for a few days. Then we noticed an increase yesterday. TBD for now, but we are pretty confident that we caught our first swarm on Wednesday or Thursday. About a week later than last year but nonetheless, mid-March is the typical time we start catching them. Also of note, all of our traps have had a lot of interest from scout bees. Hive inspection ✅ • • • So, my bees swarmed about a month ago. After realizing this, I moved my hive and left all of the frames with honey inside of it, with all intentions of relocating it to my family’s land at the river. I wanted to do this in hopes that I could “catch” a wild colony. I have gotten off of work late the past few weeks and we have been busy on the weekends and I have not been able to move the hive. About a week ago, my husband told me that it looked like some bees were around my hive. I Went to investigate it and noticed lots of bees coming in and out of the entrance. So this past weekend I moved the hive to a new spot and done a complete inspection. There are lots of workers and a few drones. I was also able to find the queen so I’m very excited to see what this colony does!
