This is no ordinary #hornetsnest ! 😳 This is a MONSTER size hornets nest. Whilst dormant in the earliest part of the year, we removed this PLUS two more from the loft space. #Hornets are actually beneficial to the environment, and controls some pests that eat plants and crops, so can be a gardeners friend. That said, a nest in your home or around living spaces can prove dangerous if messed with, and at night they are attracted to light so often you can get swarms around your doorstep if you leave the porch light on, and hornets also like to eat bees as part of their diet, so too many can be detrimental to certain spaces. However, whilst hornets can be intimidating, they are far less aggressive than wasps and are also pollenators, so they are of benefit to he environment. These collosal nests are made by the hornets, that chew up wood and form these huge homes. This is one the largest I've ever seen, they range from a tennis ball, up to this size. Holding this huge nest is Andy! Andy is amazing and is a walking encyclopedia of all things #wildlife, and conservation. His business Eco Logical has an ethos that focuses on managing woodlands but sustainably, working in harmony with the #environment. Andy taught me alot! Gosh, there are things I would have removed from the ground thinking it was a weed, which are in fact #native species of plant that blossom into beautiful flowers that give #pollenators tonnes of pollen. Take Vipers Bugloss for instance ,which transforms itself from a dandelion type base into a huge purple stemmed flower, and Ragwort, a vital source of food for our native Cinnabar Moth. Bug Safari 🕵️♀️📸 - Bug safari seems to be off to a slow start this year. I’ve enjoyed one ‘official’ Bug Safari, and a couple of unofficial ones, but that’s going to change, the call of the insects is strong now! 🥰 My parsley and celery plants are going to seed nicely, and the insects went mad for them last summer, so I'm hoping to have another Bug Safari venue right on my doorstep again this year too 🤞… Husband has had strict instructions to turn a blind eye to my tatty little patch 🤨 This morning I headed out loaded up like a pack horse to see what I could find. and actually found myself looking for nursery spiders, as this is about the time of year they start nesting. When it dawned on me I was actually out looking for spiders I had to chuckle 🤣, there was a time when I would have run away, not towards one 😳. How we change! I had no luck with the spiders, but the flowers are full of flower beetles doing their thing at the moment, so dropping my bag (gently) it wasn’t long before I was shuffling in the undergrowth on all fours stalking the busy little beetles! I did feel a little out of practice, but a couple more outings and it’ll be like Bug Safari never ended! At the moment these Flower Long Horned beetles are everywhere, enjoying the pollen and sweet nectar the spring flowers have to offer and in return, they pollenate the flowers 🙌.
