We are truly captivated by Karen Navarroโs โRite of Passageโ installation. Rite of Passage (2023) has been created by suspending large synthetic braids adorned with blue tassels above an arrangement of river rocks, some of which Navarro has painted red. Silver bells and uplifting words of indigenous wisdom are incorporated within the blue tassels. Witnesses are encouraged to walk barefoot through the installation. All the beauty...a little bit of sass mixed with nonchalant posing and the teeniest smile in a maternity portrait will always give me all the vogue vibes. . . I'm still processing so much information from the self-value workshop I attended last week with Sue Bryce. Between reflection and prayer I am navigating inherent, and assumed thoughts about self-value I currently have. . . Sometimes I feel like this photo...nonchalant. Let us stand in our beautiful light! . I've spent most of today in bed. I was in Phoenix for a 2-day self-value workshop with @suebrycephotographer and it was honestly pretty eye opening. I mean, so many things came to my awareness from childhood. The workshop wasn't a therapy session, but it definitely made me think about why I do things, why certain things upset me, and what makes me happy. . The biggest take away was, if there's a problem, no...I won't solve it (Vanilla Ice...lol)! Seriously though, I will start looking in the mirror to see what I need from myself to find my joy. . Blaming others for your happiness, waiting for someone to value you, or being upset because change isn't coming to you...rethink that and look at the person closest to you...like shadow close. . . I've always been timid about shining my light out of fear of rejection due to past experiences with childhood friends, corporate workplace drama, etc. People don't like folks who can do a lot of things well. But what I realized is that...I no longer can accept others projecting their insecurities on me. What they fear, or don't like about my talents is a reflection on their unhappiness with their own deficiencies. . My light has always shined pretty brightly despite how much I try to quiet it to make others feel better. . I've always been like a little lantern with frosted glass. Light shines through but in a very muted way. But over time and with maturity, I've accepted more of me. . There's a balance between ego and humility, and I dance between both out of fear of not being thankful for my gifts, fear of becoming arrogant, and fear of losing such talents because I lose my way from God in search of praise for my greatness. . I aim to not be ashamed of what God has given me. I humbly move forward with God's guidance to (cue cheese military slogan) be all that he wants me to be. Lol! . . I'm super proud of this image from my recent Vibrant session. The process to create this image was so stressful because I think in monochromatic, jewel tones, and less vibrant! Haha! But I specifically wanted to delve into vibrant because it would be a challenge, it would be so cool to see how a Sanguine session would turn out. And I'm beyond happy with what we created together! . . Dare I say...this is one of the more subdued images. The sets I created I look at with so much pride and joy. I believe I created something unique for every outfit change, and that was a lot for me. . . I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this branding shoot for @go3vodka . When Mike told me the concept I was very excited to put ideas together to bring his vision to life. . . I love that @go3vodka is all around General Order No3 which freed the enslaved Africans in Texas...and why Juneteenth is celebrated. The history and purpose of what this vodka brand wants to accomplish is profound. I can't say enough about all the many people I met during this shoot who represent black excellence. It was truly an honor to capture this moment in their brand history. . . Mike wanted to focus on the moms, teachers, AKAs, and other women in for a special song he had licensed for his brand. You can see it on their site. For this mom we had three setups for her to capture her love and pizzaz of country western/true Houston rodeo style vibes. I asked Mike if he could get hay bales and a saddle and he had everything ready to make this shot remarkable. But when I met this mom...listen...she took the whole cake! This high school senior came in to the studio for her portraits. I love it when kids want to be photographed like they are in Vogue or Seventeen magazine. The seniors I've had in studio so far have all been creatives. They are pursing college degrees in the arts and I love that they choose me to capture something fine art. . . This senior was no different. She is going to college to major in film. She also used to model as a child...although she shied away from that experience, she definitely had gorgeous moves to match her look. . . For her session, we kept things very simple and modern. She brought two outfits, and created a third look from the black dress under this pink one. The vibe was totally Calvin Klein, Nordstrom, high end etc. . .I asked her if it was ok to pull out this fabric (curtain panel) to create a very soft and simple creative look. I had it sitting on a chair, and when I saw her dress I thought it would pair well with what she had on. I love how it turned out! . . Seniors are special to me. They have wide eyed energy, are eager to see where life takes them, and excited to wrap up high school and begin a journey of independence. Although I strive to make everyone feel special in front of my lens, it is very important that seniors feel confident and beautiful about themselves. Today is her 40th birthday! We did this shoot last month and I had to sit on her images until the big reveal to her family and friends. And I was bursting at the seams for her birthday to arrive so I could share! Happy Birthday! . . This concept came to me because she wanted florals everywhere! I immediately knew how it would feel, and worked on building the set for her. It was a last minute idea to add the harp...becuase what vintage garden doesn't have a harp right?! Lol! Thanks to my friend @houstonharpist who is an amazing harpist that allowed me to rent her harp for this set design. . . Technically speaking theres a lot that is wrong with this photo, but I think what I love about it is the movement we captured. Her hair sweeping as she quickly moves failing to maintain her pose because she is just 4.โ .โ . โ Her puppy focuses on the camera and she's already moved on to the next thing that captures her fancy. โ As frustrating as it is for a mom photographer to not capture the perfect portrait, I can't help but feel emotional seeing that this might be the last portrait I have of my toddler.
