Tomorrow is World Curlew Day. Don't forget that there are, or were, nine species of Curlew across the world, two of them are called Whimbrels. Two species have already become extinct; the Eskimo Curlew and the Slender-billed Curlew, so we have no room for complacency with regard to the long term prospects of the remaining seven. The Far Eastern Curlew is considered Endangered, the Bristle-thighed and Eurasian Curlews are Near Threatened and although the Long-billed and Little Curlew are considered Least threatened, the population of the Long-billed is decreasing. Both Eurasian and Hudsonian Whimbrel are Least Concern at present, although the subspecies of Eurasian Whimbrel known as the Steppe Whimbrel was declared extinct in 1994, however, they were rediscovered wintering in Mozambique in 2016, but naturally remain very rare indeed. Being a Curlew in the modern world is hard, and we need to make it easier. Trying out different substrates to create collagraph plates with & this one requires a bit more work to achieve some stronger tonal contrasts. The great thing about these plates is that I can make changes to them if dissatisfied with the results. A few hundred years ago, the fens covered a vast swathe of England. Thousands of water birds took advantage of the habitat, including many waders, among them the Black-tailed Godwit. With the draining of the fens, the godwits all but disappeared and during the days of skin and egg collectors, the lure of a rare British godwit was too much to resist, so the few remaining birds ended up, for the most part, in glass boxes. But 100 years later, they returned and, with help from conservationists, they are beginning to get a foothold in England again. In the same way, Pied Avocets also disappeared as a breeding bird. In their case it was a war that returned their habitat to them, 100 years after they were extirpated. But, once again it was conservationists that worked hard to give them somewhere to live and now they breed over a wide area once again. Wader Quest is an organisation that cares about waders too, and 100% of our members' subs and all donations plus 25% of merchandising sales are used exclusively for wader conservation projects around the world.
