Wie (an)gemalt 🐔 Die in fast ganz Afrika verbreiteten Helmperlhühner (hier im #Krugernationalpark in Südafrika) gehören zu den ersten Vögeln, die durch den Menschen domestiziert wurden. Es gibt Nachweise, nach denen bereits die alten Ägypter im 3. Jahrtausend vor unserer Zeitrechnung Hausperlhühner hielten. Auch die Phönizier und Griechen züchteten Perlhühner, noch bevor das Haushuhn in Europa bekannt wurde. 🎨 In der frühen Neuzeit gelangte das Perlhuhn ein zweites Mal nach Europa, dieses Mal eingeführt von den Portugiesen. Malachite kingfisher @mankwereserve A couple of weeks ago I was back in South Africa with some undergraduate students. We stayed at a small privately run reserve in the North West province. I had missed the South African wildlife , and despite being a small reserve the biodiversity here is still really good. It was nice getting to see some old and new species. 621 - White-breasted Cormorant, Kommetjie, Apr 2024. Common resident found at a variety of inland and coastal water bodies as well as the ocean. (Witborsduiker) Our largest species of cormorant and unmistakeable with white underparts and large size. The eye is green with black eye ring and yellow orange bare skin under the bill. The juveniles have all white chest and belly. Usually seen loafing on an exposed perch preening and sunning itself. White-breasted Cormorants eat mainly fish which they catch while fishing underwater. A common sight for most birders at coastal beaches and inland lakes and estuaries, this species doesn’t really get anyone excited but they are magnificent birds when you take a closer look… There were a large number of different Cormorant species on the rocky outcrop at Kommetjie one morning. The Cape Vulture (Gyps coprotheres), or Kransaasvoël in Afrikaans, is certainly one of Southern Africa’s most impressive birds, with a wingspan of approximately 2.6m this is one of the larger species in the region. This immature vulture was found sitting on a telephone pole on an overcast day, these birds rely mostly on thermals to gain height and then glide from one thermal to the next in search of carrion. Relying solely on carrion for a food source the destruction of wild habitat and the removal of apex predators has had a devastating effect on these birds.
