27/04/1961 - 27/04/2024 Today marks the 73rd anniversary of the explosion of the RFA Bedenham. The RFA Bedenham was a naval armament carrier. It had arrived in Gibraltar on 24 April 1951 and on the morning of 27 April, exactly 70 years ago, was unloading depth charges at Gun Wharf to a lighter (a shallow-draft boat or barge used in the unloading of larger ships). A depth charge ignited while in the process of being unloaded. This caused a fire and an explosion in the lighter which then spread to the Bedenham itself. Brave attempts to contain the fire proved to no avail and the Bedenham too exploded violently. The explosion rocked Gibraltar. Its force was such that parts of the vessel were blown out of the water onto the actual quayside and elsewhere. The explosion killed 13 people, injured hundreds and caused extensive damage to property. Windows shattered all over Gibraltar and the Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and the Convent were particularly badly affected. “The explosion of the Bedenham was a before and after moment for that generation of Gibraltarians. Everyone could remember where they were and what they were doing when the ship blew up. “This was a tragic accident but the truth is that it could have been much worse. The incident involved a Pakistan Air Force(PAF) T33 trainer. The Lockheed T33 was an American aircraft first flying in 1949. In 1955-56 PAF received 15 T33 planes equipping No2 Fighter Conversion Unit. In early 1971, No2 sqd was at Mauripur(Masroor) air base at Karachi. Flt Lt Matiur Rahman was a Bengali pilot instructor, who had witnessed first-hand the crackdown under Operation Searchlight in East Pakistan. After 25th March'71, PAF grounded all its Bengali pilots & war looked imminent. Matiur intended to join the Bangladesh liberation war. On 20 August'71, a 21-year old Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas was taxiing towards the runway in his T33, when Matiur signaled him to stop & climbed into the instructor's seat. After taking off, Matiur attempted to highjack the aircraft, defect & reach Bhuj, the nearest IAF base. Minhas managed to alert the control tower before being knocked unconscious. Later, Minhas wrestled with Rahman for control & crashed the plane in Pakistan, about 40kms short of the Indian border. Minhas was killed immediately. Matiur's body was found some distance behind the T33 without its canopy. For his actions, Minhas received Pakistan's highest gallantry award, the Nishan-e-Haider, becoming the youngest & shortest serving PAF officer to have got it. Matiur Rahman was awarded the 'Bir Sreshtho', Bangladesh's highest gallantry award. On 24 June 2006, Matiur Rahman's mortal remains were finally handed over by Pakistan to Bangladesh, when he was reburied in Dhaka with full military honors. The T33 retired from PAF in 1993. Today's story is about two young pilots, one instructor one pupil, winning gallantry awards posthumously from 2 countries in 1971 for the love for their respective motherlands. The incident involved a Pakistan Air Force(PAF) T33 trainer. The Lockheed T33 was an American aircraft first flying in 1949. In 1955-56 PAF received 15 T33 planes equipping No2 Fighter Conversion Unit. In early 1971, No2 sqd was at Mauripur(Masroor) air base at Karachi. Flt Lt Matiur Rahman was a Bengali pilot instructor, who had witnessed first-hand the crackdown under Operation Searchlight in East Pakistan. After 25th March'71, PAF grounded all its Bengali pilots & war looked imminent. Matiur intended to join the Bangladesh liberation war. On 20 August'71, a 21-year old Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas was taxiing towards the runway in his T33, when Matiur signaled him to stop & climbed into the instructor's seat. After taking off, Matiur attempted to highjack the aircraft, defect & reach Bhuj, the nearest IAF base. Minhas managed to alert the control tower before being knocked unconscious. Later, Minhas wrestled with Rahman for control & crashed the plane in Pakistan, about 40kms short of the Indian border. Minhas was killed immediately. Matiur's body was found some distance behind the T33 without its canopy. For his actions, Minhas received Pakistan's highest gallantry award, the Nishan-e-Haider, becoming the youngest & shortest serving PAF officer to have got it. Matiur Rahman was awarded the 'Bir Sreshtho', Bangladesh's highest gallantry award. On 24 June 2006, Matiur Rahman's mortal remains were finally handed over by Pakistan to Bangladesh, when he was reburied in Dhaka with full military honors.
