Full disclosure, this is an old cell photo 🤷🏼♀️ I really wanted a cool moth photo for #themeothemonth since I was trying to think outside the box, and we know bugs often have ‘eyes’ to confuse predators. It’s still too early this year for any bug photos, but the Io moth has one of the best eyes out there and I really wanted to post him. I’ve only seen one of these once ever, and he was knocking on death’s door. He couldn’t fly anymore, so I scooped him up and moved him to this branch before our dogs could step on him. He clung onto it…I took his photo…and wished him the best in what little time he had left 🥺. Life is so fleeting. Sometimes it feels too hard, but if something feels right, just go for it. It could be the best thing you’ve ever done. . Polilla paó Automeris io✨ 📍És un lepidòpter nocturn de la família Saturniidae. Com tota la resta d’automeris es caracteritza per els seus dos “ulls” simulats, que el fan semblar perillós per als seus depredadors (ous, mamífers, aranyes e insectes). 📍La seva geolocalització ha anat variant al llarg dels anys: fa un temps era molt comú per tota Inglaterra; avui dia es troba quasi bé extinta (excepte a Massachusetts i Cape Cod). On n’hi podem trobar més és a Suda Amèrica i Amèrica Central. 📍De mitja fan postes de 26 ous, que són d’uns 1,7mm i de color groc-verdós amb una franja blanca. Conforme l’ou madura la franja groga es va tornant marró. 📍La larva té cinc fases larvars, tot i que en funció de les condicions del lloc on habita en pot tenir més. Quan la larva és més madura arriba als 6cm. Les seves crisàlides són fines i fràgils, quasi bé com el paper, i de color marró fosc. 📍En aquesta fase ja es pot distingir entre mascles i femelles per una franja que hi tenen al cinquè segment abdominal. 📍En la fase adulta les podem distingir per les antenes; els mascles les tenen més prominents que les femelles. A més a més les femelles solen ser marrones, mentre que els mascles varien entre tonalitats de marró i groc, que sol ser més presents en espècimens de la regió nord. 📍En la fase d’apareament les femelles segreguen una feromona que atrau als mascles. Un cop fecundades els mascles no s’alimenten i moren al poc temps. Mentrestant les femelles fan les postes en grups a la tija o a les fulles de les plantes. Als deu dies aquests eclosionen, s’alimenten de l’ou i posteriorment de la planta hoste. 📍Més endavant les noves larves són gregàries i es desplacen en processó fins a trobar una nova font d’aliment. Well, this was tricky. With all the dramatic moths I had this night (7/16/23), what do you lead with? At this point, it looks like I/we had 141 moth species that night, perhaps just about my best night ever with species totals. Most all of the big names, too. It's one of the reasons to get out there. Bittersweet - Color pencil sketch, Oil paintings of this series to come! Since it's Valentine's Day I decided it was time to sketch out the next piece in this series, a heart! All aspects of this one have symbolism to me ❤️ The flowers are bittersweet nightshade, in the language of flowers they mean fidelity and were used in bridal wreaths to ward off evil. They are also very poisonous. Symbolism surrounding the Io moth usually revolves around themes of transformation and self-discovery due to its life cycle and behavior.
