The 10th graders read a story this year called “The Last Curiosity” by Amy Tan. In it, an artificial, cloud-based intelligence that has outlasted the human race gets curious about what made us act so crazy. To satisfy its curiosity, it fashions organic bodies to inhabit, and divides itself into them. Individuated, the intelligence experiences loneliness, rage, and boredom. The first violent fight comes not over property or food, but from frustration with not being able to communicate fully at the same time, like they used to in cloud form. They fought over attention. The students who actually read it said the story was “weird” and “crazy.” High praise. I asked the 10th graders and the seniors both if AI should still serve us if it gets more powerful than us. I was surprised that the vast majority said no. One of the most thoughtful students I’ve ever taught said, “I think the best case scenario is that the AGI’s keep us around like lap dogs. Something cute and funny to play with.” She wasn’t joking. I have been dedicated to the idea that human art will always be special because we are conscious beings in bodies that will die. We have to know it, and then go on bopping around anyway. It makes us funny and sad and desirous in ways that spice our songs and stories. I want to believe that no algorithm can replicate the organic oddity that gives us our life and expression, but it’s obvious why I’d be invested in that belief. I’ve spent a lot of time learning skills that a machine can now replicate in seconds from a two sentence prompt. Surely there’s something it can’t capture, though, right? Right? “Creature” is a song about feeling defiantly animal as the machines wake up. It’s the second single off my upcoming EP, and it will be out Friday. . . . The Iowa to Ontario tour was one for the books. @riverglenmusic and I traversed from the charming Marksdale to Guelph to London, sharing songs and space and food with the loveliest people. Traveling as an artist can sometimes be challenging (sleeping in new beds, flexing to the rhythm of the day, waiting to eat or drink, finding an iron for your suitcase clothes), and yet it’s an opportunity for mindfulness, connection, novelty, vulnerability, discovery, delight, wonder. I love it and I’m thankful for it. And to come home when tour was done—nothing like it. The delicious heartache of transitions. My recommends? Go check out @hillarywatsonmusic and @thepairsmusic, the forthcoming album from @marnieleemccourty, grab snacks at @susansdeli, catch a show at @rootcellarldn, and drink everything at @revelcider (and get one of their cute a$$ hats).
