Lowlife - Diminuendo (1987 - post-punk, dream pop, gothic rock, ethereal wave) "When difference between glass and ice grows indistinguishable" On the thermometer of musical measurements and temperatures, post-punk as a genre is almost entirely cold. Just look at the most popular flagship releases in this style's history- the Cure's Disintegration is a pitch-black night terrorized by freezing winds, Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures is emotionally frosty as well as physically shiver-inducing, and Deathconsciousness by Have a Nice Life might as well take place inside a slowly thawed-out heart recovered from the morgue. Something about the mechanical drumbeats and deep bass grooves of the sound resonates with the winter's banks of snow, hail, and acid rain. More often than not, artists use the existence of these arctic affairs to simulate the feeling of cabin fever, a claustrophobic blast chiller with no end to its inching indications of doom. Even in the genre's peak during the mid eighties and early nineties, Lowlife's interpretation of the post-punk chills went relatively unappreciated. During their dozen years as an ensemble, these Scottish performers practiced a proto-shoegaze portion of punk rock's most ethereal side effects. They went about this well-balanced mix whilst mostly keeping in line with the icicle-like atmospheres of the style's most significant endeavors, but as sophomore album Diminuendo so straightforwardly communicates, the band's quirky nooks and crannies radiate the sweet escape of surprising warmth. The polar ice caps of Diminuendo are largely maintained by early tracks such as A Sullen Sky, the rigid frigid opening track whose vocals echo in fridge-like tunnels of fright. Ragged Rise to Tumbledown operates inside the parameters of pop, and yet its heat waves aren't overbearing enough to demand the use of sunglasses. Diminuendo isn't quite the ice age that its more distinguished peers, but it speeds up the glacial pace of post-punk with a decently robust memory of summertime affection. Lowlife's exercises in rock music recorded a whole range of microclimates. Their second expedition is a comfort to a hypothermic style's status quo. ★★★½
