Soundwork is not EASY. Perhaps occasionally it can be, when pitched and delivered as a sonic meditation. But I’ve noticed that’s not really what I do, anymore. Almost never. Sound is transcendental, boundless, limitless in how it is able to offer a bridge between our conscious vessel and higher consciousness/intuitive soul. The interplay, the conversation between the two, is rarely simple, direct, or even enjoyable. I’ve been playing at a breathwork retreat this weekend (thanks for having me @the_breath_space ) and a guest said to me that Jamie had reminded them all from the outset that breathwork is WORK. I totally agree, and sound sits in the same liminal plane where conscious efforting blends with trust in the journey available to us when we let go of the wheel. I still find myself worrying if people have a good time in my sessions. But I’m reminded today after several days of intense new moon-fuelled sound experiences, of the importance of remembering that they are not necessarily here to have a good time. The work is challenging, triggering, shadowy and perhaps painful, as much as it also has the capacity for being transcendental, illuminating and psychedelic. It’s also especially worth noting that sound will land very differently in your body, mind and soul, depending on what your immediate prior experience has been. It’s why sessions on retreats are universally more intense than just a gentle drop-in group. If you arrive at your sound journey off the back of intense and challenging times, whether a breathwork retreat, therapy session, tough motorway drive or an argument with your partner, your unresolved trauma will be nearer the surface, and thus most likely will manifest more acutely during the frequencies. Take care, and choose your timing in attunement with your own needs. Be mindful, too, that in a group, the collective dynamic has a part to play. It’s really common for a group already connected through friendship, retreat space or otherwise, to share similar physical and visual experiences in the a group session.

Whenever I feel lonely, I remind myself that I am never alone. This loneliness is only calling me more to connect more with my guides, my ancestors, to trust the goddess within, and to call on support of the divine. I feel it more deeply when I bleed, always. For the past year or so I’ve experienced this deep, visceral connection when in my red tent, not only to the women in my current lifetime but the women who came before me. It’s truly beautiful and something I feel so grateful to receive such divine support and guidance. So I spend a little more time communing with them at this time of the month, with oracle cards, journalling, red tent meditation. It makes me feel nourished, supported and loved which is exactly what’s needed. The picture is my ‘red tent goddess spread’, some goddess guidance for each phase of my menstrual cycle - Maiden, priestess, queen, crone. It feels more aligned than my new moon spreads sometimes and I don’t bother at new moon, or I use it as a ‘top up’ to apply some more attention to my new moon intention.
