It’s never just hair… My Grandad used to let me do his hair from when I was a little girl… (see slide 2.) 🙈 As the years went on, I got older and he got less hair, but something that continued was that he would always let me do his hair. Grandad got older, a little more frail and had a lot less hair, but he would still come and visit me every 6 weeks for a haircut, there wasn’t much hair to cut anymore but he always said that he felt a million bucks after I’d given him one. He used to love the head massage and after he would always say, “oh, that feels really nice doesn’t it, dear?” When my Grandad got sick, I went to the hospital and cut his hair and shaved his face with shaky hands, he was on blood thinners and I knew how frail he’d become. I didn’t know at the time I was giving him his last haircut and shave… all I knew was I was taking good care of him and blessing him with the only thing I could give him at that point. I didn't write this post lightly, but it needs to be said. I hopefully helped a lady, a single mum, who tried to commit suicide after she suffered from pCIA. It affected her marriage so much her husband left her. This is the reason I write this post. It's true. Children can worry about there parent/parents, even from a young age. If mum always looks like she has cancer this can cause a daily reminder that mum has had it, maybe still has it etc I'm sure you get the picture. We all remember that time we had to explain to our family our diagnoses. It's the hardest part, isn't it? pCIA affects the whole family, not just the sufferer and can cause marital problems, even divorce. It's never just hair. Have you questioned your slow hair growth after finishing chemo for breast cancer? If you've had Taxane drug Docetaxel/Taxotere and it's been 6 months or more, then according to the manufacturer, that's as good as it's going to get! What can you do? There is nothing that will make your hair grow - it's permanent. Low dose minoxidil has helped some but remember it's not a cure. There is no cure. You might want to give it a try, talk to your doctor about it. Remember it's a lifelong commitment, once you stop taking it any hair that grew with it will come out. There are side effects and it's not suitable for some people especially with BP/heart issues. What you can do is to make sure your case of pCIA is reported. Pressure your oncologist to report it but don't leave it there. You can also report it yourself - at least then you will know it has actually been reported. If you visit our website, look for the reporting page and follow the link for your country and make that report. If hair could talk …. Always thoughtful, @simplysarahnz was talking about how hair is, of course, never really about the hair. I reflected that I’ve had a few styles over the years each a reflection of who I wanted to project outwardly. One of the first things I did, when I left home and went to university was to cut my very long dark hair into a short bob. The hairdresser was concerned, “ Are you absolutely sure?” I couldn’t have been surer. I felt free and my bouncy light hair was a joy. Moving through my twenties and starting off in my first professional jobs, I opted for short regularly maintained cuts. By this stage my silvers were coming in thick and fast so the regular dyeing was a serious undertaking! If my hair could have talked it would be saying something about me being feminine( but not girly), serious but not sombre, and independent but not eccentric. Moving into my late twenties and through my thirties, I mostly had a longish bob - feminine, quite mumsy, nothing too adventurous. My hair, if it could talk was saying that I did not have time for such trivial matters, engaged as I was with motherly cares and responsibilities. Moving through my forties, I increasingly did not connect with who I felt I was on the inside, and who the mirror was reflecting back at me. Had I ever looked in a mirror in my thirties I wondered. I had enough of covering up the roots. I’d dye my hair and a week later, the silvering crown was popping through. I decided somewhat on a whim to go blonde, thinking that at least the roots would be more camouflaged, but boy had I underestimated the toll that takes on the condition! If my hair could have voiced the identity it was projecting- I think it was screaming for help! Who is this middle aged woman I’m not ready to become?! My kids were babies just yesterday, right?! And now, more than two years after ditching the dye, what would my hair say? This who I am. A middle aged woman, enjoying this stage of life and the self-awareness and self-confidence that comes with that. There’s strength in simplicity, power in self-acceptance. BOOOOM💥 "IT'S NOT JUST HAIR" FROM THAT (PIC.1) TO THIS (PIC 2 and 3) there's a meaningful difference! In terms of time, mindset and attitude and family experiences. In the first picture, captured months ago I was just appreciating my curls cause after a long hairsession my afros were defined hydrated and nourished. Just a day like many others but filled up with satisfaction for the hair results. My mindset in some aspects was the same as that I have today but for others it was completely different. I always say that in life nobody knows what's to come, but the deep sense of this truth, I know now, was obscure to me yet. In the second and third pictures instead surely there's a different me. I've learnt that life lesson. My life has deeply and irremediably changed as my family experience. Something or, better, someone is missing, I've recently started a new life/body journey which I hope it will transform me and I've so many hopes and desires for the future... All is changed and it's changing in front of and inside me. Physically, mentally, spiritually. I like the idea that all of this is expressing also on my face and especially on the look of my hair. It's a new era. I hope so. And it is for my hair too. she said to me in a frantic message before her appointment. I told her, "of course not! why would you say that?" She explained that she had been in a funk for about 3 weeks and was itching for a change. We went over the options: • Keeping her color fun, but cutting it. • Changing the color all together and cutting it. • Keeping it long since it took so long to get there, but she wasn't really maintaining it anymore... You get the point. But what I told her was this: "Let's chop off some of that length. Because all it is is dead weight and the shit we go through energetically stays in our hair" Woah, did that resonate with her. Then, at her appointment we did a little hands-on therapy (which was my little gift to her) and I handed her the shears after gathering her hair into two pigtails. "Cut between the elastics" I said. I'm mad to read @emmadabiri's new book 'Don't Touch My Hair' but haven't managed to find a copy yet, so I'm entering her #MyHairStory competition! . I'm keen to learn about the politics of black hair and how society has tried to tame and exclude it - but also I was surprised, as a pasty-faced redhead, by how hard I related to Emma's experiences at school. In an interview with The Irish Times, she talks about dreading sleepovers at her friends' houses because she would shed hair and they would tell her it looked like pubes. I remember having 'ginger-pubes' and 'carrot-top' shouted at me from across streets and corridors, and being terrified of letting boys near me for years because I was so ashamed. My hair was always a big ball of knots within 5 minutes of brushing it, and even now sometimes I see myself in a mirror and think of the girls who used to say "seriously, do you never brush your hair?" . Learning guitar was a new lease of life. I joined a band when I was 15, and after our first gig someone left a comment on our website saying how hot we were - "apart from that ginger yoke." After that it didn't seem to matter how much I practised my guitar or how many decent songs I wrote, I always felt inferior because I just didn't look good on stage. . Even as an adult, the amount of pitying comments I've gotten about being "pale and ginger" is surprising. "It must be SO annoying not being able to get a tan!" Um, nope. I'm actually fine with the colour of my skin, and hair, thanks very much. . Some of my friends were super adventurous with their hair over the years, but I think this is the reason why I've never dyed mine and probably never will. It would almost feel like a betrayal of sorts. And I'm stubborn! . It’s sumthing I really found so hard was losing my hair everyone say it’s only hair it doesn’t define you but when ur a women or man for that matter and u lose ur hair though chemo it’s very hard to deal with I felt I’d lost a big part of myself and to have ur children and parter see u at ur most vulnerable is sumthing i still to this day find hard.
