Je weiter die Forschung dabei ist, die komplexen Zusammenhänge in unserem Körper zu entschlüsseln, desto komplexer können jedoch auch die Computermodelle werden, die unter Berücksichtigung dieser Faktoren die Effektivität von Wirkstoffen berechnen. Die digitalen Ansätze in der Forschung und Entwicklung haben für Patient*innen viele Vorteile. Denn Geschlecht, Alter, Vorerkrankungen, Wechselwirkungen mit anderen Wirkstoffen oder Genetik sind nur ein Teil der Einflussfaktoren, die bestimmen, wie gut ein Medikament wirkt. „Gerade bei immunologischen Erkrankungen gibt es immer wieder Patient*innengruppen, die sehr gut auf eine Medikation ansprechen, aber auch Gruppen, bei denen Medikamente nicht wirken“, erklärt Britta Wagenhuber, Leiterin Translational Disease Modeling bei Sanofi in Deutschland. Quale grande azienda farmaceutica è all’avanguardia nella ricerca e nello sviluppo? I dati rivelano che la principale spesa in ricerca e sviluppo nel 2023 è stata Merck & Co., con un ampio margine . Anche se Pfizer aveva quasi lo stesso fatturato di Merck (60,1 miliardi di dollari contro 58,5 miliardi di dollari), il suo rapporto ricerca e sviluppo era nella fascia bassa, al 18,29%, ovvero 10,7 miliardi di dollari. I giganti farmaceutici svizzeri Roche Pharmaceuticals e Novartis avevano rapporti di ricerca e sviluppo rispettivamente del 29,68% e del 30,09%. Sebbene siano ancora consistenti, queste cifre impallidiscono rispetto all'impegno di Merck in ricerca e sviluppo. In generale, i giganti farmaceutici stanno investendo molto in ricerca e sviluppo, con la maggior parte delle aziende che dedicano tra il 14% e il 30% circa dei propri ricavi agli sforzi di ricerca e sviluppo.
