Jade Vine💎 Bow down to the queen of the bean family! These are the extraordinary blooms of the Jade Vine, Strongylodon macrobotrys. Not only is the stark turquoise coloration intoxicating, but also rare. Less than 10% of flowers have a blue color. On top of that, these flowers are quite big. Each flower is up to 3in long and the entire pseudoraceme (last photo) can be over 4ft long. The Jade Vine is a member of the fabaceae family, which is the plant family that contains all legumes (true beans). This unique plant is endemic to the Philippines, and very rare in the wild. It’s considered endangered as its native habitat is lost to deforestation. However, it is becoming more availability through cultivation. I’ve only ever seen this plant in bloom once before, many years ago. I didn’t know much about plants then, but I was still in awe over this one. If you wander through our Palm House right now you’ll most likely be stopped in your tracks by the luminous beauty of the jade vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys). The jade vine is a climbing member of the pea & bean family (Fabaceae - the legume family) and its beautiful pendant racemes (flower clusters) reach nearly a metre in length. But it’s the extraordinary emerald-turquoise colour of the flowers that really grabs the attention. Scientists have discovered that this amazing colour is down to a unique combination of two pigments (chemicals that absorb certain wavelengths of light) in the flowers. A blue pigment (malvin) & a yellow pigment (saponarin) combine in a special ratio of 1:9. These pigments then absorb light of all wavelengths except the characteristic jade colour that we see in the flowers. The jade vine originates from the Philippines where it grows in the rainforest and the flowers are pollinated by bats drawn to the luminosity of the flowers at twilight. The bats hang upside down and drink nectar from the flowers while brushing the top of their heads against the pollen. Sadly, in the wild, the jade vine is under threat from extensive deforestation and so we are grateful to have this wonderful specimen here at the Garden. Since childhood, Penang has always been my favourite place to visit for holidays. So when a group of good friends comprisiing some established ladies invited me for a trip there, I couldn't resist it, the thought of the delicious local food already playing in my mind. We stayed for 3 nights at a beautiful bungalow on Penang Hill, hosted by the gracious Joan Shori. We were spoilt for choice, food-wise, because the local dishes we craved for like laksa, mamak mee, tosai, apom and the best-ever homemade scones were whipped up by Joan herself and a chef specially chosen by Joan. Joan owns Ambong Langkawi but lives in this cosy bungalow on Penang Hill with a beautiful well- kept garden. I almost went berserk when I saw her stunning blooming jade vine. We were also introduced to her charming neighbour Madam Rosna Cocknell who hosted us lunch the next day, at her exquisite home. We were served the most delicious nyonya laksa and ice kacang served in 150yrs old antique bowls. Wow....the taste of the laksa was out of this world and truly satisfying. On our last day, we were at Habitat Penang, where we had a chance to discover the amazing treats of our natural surroundings.
