One short week ago, we said goodbye to our Jeanie. It’s been a rough week and we miss her terribly. She’s now back home with us in a different form, but her little spirit lives forever here. We will continue to share fond memories and happier times, while we move forward with sharing our Pippa. Thank you, friends, for the outpouring of love and support, and for grieving with us. The messages, comments, and photos you’ve shared have helped more than you know. You’ve reminded me of events we attended and people we met along the way. And after our local tv station ran that beautiful tribute to Jeanie, parents even called the station to ask if there would be a memorial service so they could bring their kids to say goodbye. There was no service, but the fact that they cared enough to ask meant so much. Grieving a pet is real and it’s hard. And we’ve seen first hand that animals grieve, too. If you are going through this, please don’t let anyone minimize your grief and pain with this kind of loss. It’s not “just a dog”. It’s YOUR dog. Jeanie is certainly not completely well yet, and from what we’ve learned, she may never be when it comes to renal failure. But she’s DEFINITELY much better! And it’s all thanks to our doctors, Dr. Mocklin and Dr. Briley and their incredible staff. We’re so grateful. She’s getting the best care and responding well. Jeanie will continue to go regularly for now for fluid treatments, with careful monitoring. Tuesday was dire. We weren’t sure if she would make it, but she did. She’s still with us & doing well! Today Jeanie’s test numbers have improved again! Dr. Mocklin had this good news this morning and was pleased to see the progress Jeanie has made in just two days. She’s perkier, standing to potty, and even eating some chicken! (And she’s peeing a LOT, which is great!) She was diagnosed with renal failure Tuesday. Our little patient is not out of the woods but she is definitely feeling better. It’s day by day right now, but today her little body is responding well! We’ll continue with the current treatment and another stay in the hospital again tonight. A HUGE “THANK YOU” to Dr. Mocklin, Alecia, Morgan, & the entire team at Country Club Veterinary Clinic, as well as the Pet Emergency Clinic for taking such good care of our girl (and mom!). She’s lived with only three legs her whole life, cancer survivor, began her life homeless, crippled, & hungry on the streets, worked as a therapy dog for over 12 years, children’s book star, national Hero Dog award winner, she’s graced national television & magazines, and, at 15 yrs old, and she’s still making the best of each day. Happy Friday, friends! We get a lot of questions, asking about Jeanie’s health these days. At 15-yrs-old (16 next month!) we are happy to report that she’s doing really well… retirement really suits her! She’s eating well, she’s happy, and she loves t-shirts. I think they add an extra level of comfort and security.) She still suffers with discomfort from the degenerative discs in her spine, but the medication regimen we are doing right now seems to be working. The CBD helps, too. She’s slower than she used to be but that’s OK, as she is not in a hurry like Pippa! She naps a lot and loves to be carried around (which is great because her mom likes to carry her!). We have rugs and yoga mats spread throughout the house so she doesnt slip… little trails to all her favorite spots w/ multiple water bowls along the way. Here’s a tip for those of you with older dogs… This is Jeanie modeling one of the many yoga mats that are spread all over the house. No, this lazy family is not doing yoga. The mats are for Jeanie. They are a dream come true for a 3-legged, arthritic little dog in a house with tile floors, whose paw pads are slick and refuses to wear anti-slip socks. We have lots of mismatched rugs, too. There are yoga mat/rug trails, or “Jeanie trails” all through the house so that she can travel without slipping.
