Meet Coach Toni! Coach Toni’s love for running began at a young age and she was a highly competitive athlete; division one in high school and division one in college. She began her coaching career at the age of 21 as the San Joaquin Memorial Head Track and Field Coach, leading the Memorial Panthers to multiple victories in their division. In 2021, she sustained a horrific accident and almost lost her lower leg. Despite many challenges, Coach Toni continues to embark as a competitive trail runner. With the hunger for the continuation of growing her knowledge in coaching Track and Field and endurance running, her focus is to help others with their journey. Meet Coach Falilatou! Running has always been a part of Coach Falilatou's life since she was young. While in Africa, she had the opportunity to coach long runs for a female judo club. When she moved to the US, she stopped coaching for a while until her daughter became interested in the Student Athletes for Cross Country team. Coach Falilatou got back into coaching by joining Fleet Feet's 5K/10K volunteer pacer team and to help improve her daughter's running performance. She also serves as a volunteer pacer for Black Girls Run! Central Valley's events and is a member of the Central Valley Traveling Sista’s run team. Meet Coach Mayreli! Coach Mayreli is an active hiker, trail runner, and rock climber. She started running on the Cross Country and Track teams in High School. In 2017, she helped found part of the TryAthletes, a group with the main focus of encouraging people to try new sports and to keep an active lifestyle. Coach May loves to volunteer in community events and races hosted throughout the Central Valley. Born in Mexico and being fluent in Spanish helps her to engage with her Latino and Spanish speaking community to promote healthy lifestyles. She is a strong believer in, "No runner left behind" and "Self-improvement is number one." Meet Coach Juanita! Coach Juanita is a proud wife and a full-time mom to her 5 children who range in age from 10 to 17 years old. In her professional role, she works in accounting for a home-based charter school, serving other families who are embarking on the journey of home learning. Coach Juanita knows all too well the challenges that come with achieving women’s health goals when there are so many other demands on them and their time. She joined Black Girls Run! Central Valley in 2019 and became a Run Coordinator in 2023. She has hosted meet ups for BGR that have ranged in distance from 2 to 6 miles. Meet Coach Carmen! Coach Carmen is an epidemiologist who wants to change her community's health, one mile at a time. She is a member of Game Changers, a program that aims to bring in more Women of Color as Certified Run Coaches, thus redefining who is seen as the experts and leaders in the run industry. Since the race’s founding, Coach Carmen has coached the Juneteenth training groups and given all of the race proceeds back into the community to fund scholarships for college-bound youth and other community service initiatives. She is a Run Coordinator for Black Girls Run! Central Valley and coached BGR's Walk Before You Run program in 2023, with PRs ranging from 2 to 17 minutes. She also coaches at the VA. The Juneteenth Freedom Run 5K/5 Mile offers free training plans and weekly in-person group runs with five certified RRCA Run Coaches to help participants toe the line, meet their goals and celebrate them at the finish. There is a 5K or 5 mile pacer for each walking and/or running group if you're a beginner, ready to increase your distance or looking to hit a new PR. All paces are welcomed!
