This Day in Science History - - - (April 30) Every 30th of April, we celebrate the anniversary of the discovery of the first subatomic particle: the #electron #OTD in 1897, English physicist Sir #JJThomson tells a startled scientific audience that he's discovered something smaller than an atom, a particle with a #minuscule mass and a #negative charge. The great physicist didn't give us the name or the structure or the exact mass, but he was the first to identify a subatomic particle. This finding #revolutionized the way #scientists thought about the #atom and had major ramifications for the field of physics.

This work was first published in 1884. (Look the equations in shown image, here, S is Poynting vector, E is the electric field, H is the magnetic field's auxiliary field or magnetizing field, - ∂u/∂t is the rate of change of the energy density in the volume, ∇ is the divergence, J is the current density.) He also wrote papers on #radiation and the #pressure of light. He published his results in "The Mean Density of the Earth" (1894) and "The Earth; Its Shape, Size, Weight and Spin" (1913). He discovered the torsion-extension coupling in finite strain elasticity. This is now known as the (positive) Poynting effect in torsion. He is credited with coining the expression "greenhouse effect" in 1909 to explain how infrared-absorbing trace gasses such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases the surface temperature of Earth and Mars. Craters on Mars and the Moon are named in his honour.

In 1897, a British physicist #JJThomson discovered the first sub atomic particle, #Electron. He established the charge-to-mass ratio of the electron but neither of them separately. Accordingly, if it was possible to determine one of these values separately (charge or mass), the other could be easily calculated. Then an American man began a long series of experiments in 1909 and finally he measured the charge of the electron (and with this, its mass). Indeed, it is considered to be one of the “most beautiful experiments in physics”. That American man is our "scientist of the day" today. It's the birthday of #RobertAndrewsMillikan, the man who didn't want to be a physicist but later became the first physicist to see the electron - - (Scientist of the Day - 22 March) Millikan was a key figure in the development of physics in the United States in the first half of the 20th century. He never meant to be a physicist. His college physics wasn't much better. After completion of college study, his Greek professor asked him to teach the course in elementary physics in the preparatory department during the next year. He replied that I did not know any physics at all then his professor said, "Anyone who can do well in my Greek can teach physics." From here, he actually started to study physics deeply to teach the college students.

Thomson, the man who electrified the world of physics! ⚛️ Born in England, Thomson was a British physicist who discovered the electron. Thomsons experiments with cathode rays, mysterious beams in vacuum tubes, were central to this landmark discovery. The prevalent thought at the time suggested these rays were a type of wave or aether. Thomson, however, believed there was more to the story. ⚡️ Through experiments involving electric and magnetic fields, he showed that these rays were made of particles that were much lighter than atoms and carried a negative charge. This was radical – it meant there were smaller constituents within the atom, and the atom itself wasn’t the most basic unit of matter.

Have you heard about the Zeeman effect? Today I introduce you to a Dutch man who discovered this effect that made him one of the most famous scientists in the world in the late 19th and early 20th century. He is our "scientist of the day" today. (2nd article of the day, out of 3) It's death anniversary of #PieterZeeman, the man who discovered the Zeeman effect - - - (Scientist of the Day - 9 October) After passing the qualification exams in 1885, Zeeman studied physics at the University of Leiden under #KamerlinghOnnes and #HendrikLorentz. In 1890, even before finishing his thesis, he became Lorentz's assistant. This allowed him to participate in a research programme on the Kerr effect. In 1893 he submitted his doctoral thesis on the Kerr effect, the reflection of polarized light on a magnetized surface. In 1896, he discovered that when an #element is burned in a flame to produce a #spectrum and is subjected to the influence of a #magnetic field, the spectral lines are doubled, tripled, or quadrupled. This is known as the Zeeman effect, and at the time it was quite perplexing, because the #electron had not even been discovered in 1896. (We now know that the Zeeman effect is the result of the fact that electrons have spin, and in a magnetic field, electrons of opposite spin have different transition energies when they change orbits, producing multiple spectral lines instead of one). When Lorentz heard about Zeeman's observations, the very next day, he called Zeeman into his office and presented him with an explanation of his observations, based on his theory of electromagnetic radiation. Zeeman's discovery confirmed Lorentz's prediction about the #polarization of light emitted in the presence of a magnetic field. Thanks to Zeeman's work it became clear that the oscillating particles that according to Lorentz were the source of light emission were negatively charged, and were a thousandfold lighter than the #hydrogen atom. This conclusion was reached well before #JJThomson's discovery of the electron. Zeeman shared the 1902 #NobelPrize in physics with Hendrik Lorentz for this work. ©️ - @cosmological_astrophysics & our admin @radhamohankunwar

Stability of Vortex Heptagon The configuration of n line vortices spaced regularly around the circumference of a circle is stable for n <= 7, and unstable for n > 7. The theorem was first proved by J. J. Thomson (1883) in connection with Lord Kelvin's vortex theory of atoms. However, for the case of n >= 7, his proof is wrong, and was corrected by T. H. Havelock almost 50 years later. The stability for n=7 still remained unknown until L. G. Kurakin & V. I. Yudovich successfully tackled the problem in 2002. The magical number 7 appears in an innocent inequality to ensure the eigenvalues of the linearized system are imaginary. Proof: J. J. Thomson, 1883 (erroneous) T. H. Havelock, 1931 (without n=7) L. G. Kurakin & V. I. Yudovich, 2002 (n=7) Experiments: A. M. Mayer, 1878 (floating magnets) E. Yarmchuk, M. Gordon & R. Packard, 1979 (superfluid helium) D. Durkin & J. Who did discover the #electron? We all know that Sir #JJThomson discovered the first subatomic particle while performing experiments on #cathode rays in 1897 but he called it #corpuscle, not electron. Then who coined this term (electron)? It was an Irish man who is our "scientist of the day" today. It's death anniversary of #GeorgeJohnstoneStoney, the man who coined the term 'electron' to describe the fundamental unit of electrical charge - - (Scientist of the Day - 05 July) Stoney published 75 scientific papers in a variety of journals. He made significant contributions to #cosmic physics and to the theory of #gases. He estimated the number of molecules in a cubic millimetre of gas, at room temperature and pressure, from data obtained from the kinetic theory of gases. But his most important scientific work was the conception and calculation of the magnitude of the "atom of #electricity". In 1891, he proposed the term 'electron' to describe the fundamental unit of electrical charge and his contributions to research in this area laid the foundations for the eventual discovery of the particle by Thomson in 1897. (It was an Irish physicist #GeorgeFrancisFitzgerald who suggested in 1897 that the term - electron - be applied to Thomson's corpuscles.) Craters on #Mars and the #Moon are named in his honour.

#modeloatomicodethomson #ciencia #quimica i #jjthomson

This Day in Science History - - (June 03) The first suggestion that a #neutron, a particle with #no electric charge but with a mass comparable to that of a #proton, might exist in the nucleus was made by professor #Rutherford in a Bakerian Lecture before the Royal Society in London on June 3, 1920, a year after he had succeeded #JJThomson as Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics in Cambridge. A full article:- Rutherford believed that the alpha particle, the doubly charged, mass-4 nucleus of the #helium atom, consisted of four protons and two #electrons, and he also believed that he had just found evidence for a new doubly charged, mass-3 nuclear particle consisting of three protons and one electron. Thus, he argued, since two electrons could bind four protons, and one electron three protons, one electron should be able to bind two protons, which would be a new mass-2 isotope of #hydrogen, and one electron should be able to combine with one proton, which would be a mass-1 neutron. To Rutherford the neutron also was needed to explain how the nuclei of heavy elements could be built up. Convinced therefore that the neutron should exist, he set some of his research students in search for it experimentally. #Chadwick, his right-hand man in the Cavendish Laboratory, also joined that search at odd times throughout the 1920s and finally in 1932, Chadwick discovered the neutron.
