Quando @maria_ressa ganhou o Nobel da Paz foi como se todas nós, jornalistas, tivéssemos sido contempladas, em especial após anos tão violentos e difíceis para as mulheres que exercem a profissão. Seu livro, “Como Enfrentar um Ditador”, é uma das minhas bíblias para um bom jornalismo, por suas muitas lições poderosas, mas, especialmente, pela maneira sincera e cativante com que a jornalista descreve sua trajetória e luta por democracia e liberdade nas Filipinas. "I started writing my first novel (which I never finished) at the age of twelve. It was about a family of wizards with lots of children, who kept moving from place to place and could never put down roots anywhere. Not a bad idea, is it? I think this was when I discovered what great satisfaction there is to be had from writing and making up stories. I drew maps of the places and portraits of the characters. I created a world. From then on I regularly wrote short pieces of fiction, mini-stories, little images and insights. I had the occasional brush with poetry, but it never really attracted me. There was only one poet whose work I read obsessively, and who really did a lot to make me learn English – T.S. Eliot. For a long time I carried a bilingual volume of his poetry about with me, pasting every possible translation into it. I sent my bits of fiction to a young people’s literary magazine, where they were published under a pseudonym. I remember the extraordinary sense of power I felt at seeing my words in print." Irène Joliot-Curie and Frédéric Joliot, a wife-and-husband team, received a Nobel Prize for their artificial creation of radioactive isotopes. With their discovery of “artificial” or “induced” radioactivity, radioactive atoms could be prepared relatively inexpensively, a boon to the progress of nuclear physics and medicine. As a child, Irène Joliot-Curie (1897–1956) had the unusual experience of attending for two years a special school that emphasized science, organized by her mother, Marie Curie, and Marie’s scientific friends for their own children. Irène was still a teenager when she worked with her Nobel Prize–winning mother in the radiography corps during World War I. After the war she assisted her mother at the Radium Institute in Paris, meanwhile completing her doctorate. She married Frédéric Joliot (1900–1958), a young physicist who had come to work with her mother. Man-Made Radioactivity The Joliot-Curies won the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their artificial creation of new radioactive elements by bombardment of alpha particles (helium nuclei, He2+) on various light elements. They correctly interpreted the continued positron emission that occurred after bombardment had ceased as evidence that “radioactive isotopes” of known elements had been created. Up to this point the only way to obtain radioactive elements was to painstakingly extract them from their natural ores at considerable cost. Irène and Frédéric Joliot-Curie in their laboratory in 1935 With the Joliot-Curies’ discovery, useful radioactive isotopes were now relatively easy and inexpensive to produce, and they rapidly became important tools in biomedical research and in the treatment of cancer. Werner Heisenberg foi um físico teórico alemão, nascido em 5 de dezembro de 1901, em Würzburg, Baviera. Ele é mais conhecido por ser um dos fundadores da mecânica quântica e por formular o princípio da incerteza, que estabelece que é impossível determinar simultaneamente com precisão a posição e a velocidade de uma partícula subatômica. Heisenberg estudou física na Universidade de Munique e obteve seu doutorado em 1923. Logo depois, ele trabalhou com Max Born e Niels Bohr, dois renomados físicos da época. Em 1925, Heisenberg desenvolveu a matriz de mecânica quântica, uma formulação matemática que descreve o comportamento das partículas subatômicas. Em 1927, Heisenberg enunciou o princípio da incerteza, que revolucionou a compreensão da física quântica. De acordo com esse princípio, a própria natureza das partículas subatômicas impede a medição precisa de suas propriedades fundamentais. Essa descoberta teve um impacto profundo na filosofia da ciência e mudou a forma como os cientistas entendiam o mundo microscópico. Heisenberg recebeu o Prêmio Nobel de Física em 1932 “pela criação da mecânica quântica, a aplicação da qual resultou na descoberta dos novos modelos atômicos”. Budynek, który tu widzimy zwany jest domkiem dróżnika. W nim w latach w latach 1888–1891 przebywał Władysław Reymont. Pracował w Lipcach jako starszy pracownik na kolei, pomocnik dróżnika. O tym fakcie przypomina pamiątkowa tablica umieszczona na budynku. W tym czasie obserwował życie wiejskie, zwyczaje, które potem opisał w Chłopach. Obecnie nikt tu nie mieszka. Czołem! Dzisiaj przynoszę Wam „Białość” Jona Fossego w przekładzie Iwony Zimnickiej. Ostatnio upodobałam sobie krótkie książki. Ta nowelka ma zaledwie kilkadziesiąt stron, ale nie można o niej powiedzieć, że jest mała. Polecam ją sobie dawkować, bo w ten sposób historia dłużej z Wami pozostanie. O czym jest nowelka? Na początku wydawało mi się, że o życiu i konsekwencjach wyborów jakie podejmujemy. Później pomyślałam, że może o samotności i o tym, w jaki sposób czyni nasze dni powtarzalnymi, a w końcu o zagubieniu, które jakby nie było też jest nieodłącznym towarzyszem naszego istnienia. Ostatecznie nie wiem, o czym jest. Cóż, może ta powieść będzie o tym, czego w danym momencie czytelnik poszukuje, albo o tym do czego zmierza. Trudno powiedzieć. Bohater wiele znajduje w ciszy, co bardzo mi się podobało. Ponadto jej rytm był dla mnie kojący i po lekturze przez dłuższą chwilę czułam autentyczną błogość. Nie jest to historia idealna, ale która z nich jest? Jeżeli szukacie krótkiej lektury, która pozwoli Wam się zapomnieć, to serdecznie polecam „Białość”. Czy ktoś z Was zna tę książkę? PAVILION OF WOMEN, PEARL S. BUCK, published in 1946. PEARL S. BUCK won the PULITZER PRIZE for The Good Earth in 1932. She won the NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE in 1938. This is my second book by this author, my first one being GOOD EARTH, which I thoroughly enjoyed. A stark difference between the two is that Good Earth is about a man, and the Pavilion of Women is about a lady and the ladies around her, all in close quarters. Like The Awakening by Kate Chopin, this also deals with a woman stuck in a suffocating matrimony. The book begins with Madam Wu’s fortieth birthday celebrations and her sudden announcement that from then on, her husband needs a concubine. By doing so, she feels she could retire and give her husband the pleasure of a woman much younger than herself, who could also produce children for him. This does come as a shock, and I felt terrible, thinking why one woman in her senses could think of arriving at such a decision. One must bear in mind that the story is set in China before the world war, and the women then had to follow strict family traditions and rules. Madam Wu goes through an ethical dilemma, debating, arguing, and justifying everything she does in her thoughts. I loved the character Madam Wu, for she is the epitome of resilience, beauty, and courage, a lady who runs the rich household without getting flustered. Women of that era, be they from any community or country, had to bottle up their wishes and desires and had to give in to the male-dominated, male-centric society. I have heard tales about talented women who had to forego their aptitudes to rear children and merely take on the home front. A lot has changed and not much has changed too in the so-called modern society where things are brushed under the carpet, calling it customary or ‘things which have been going on for generations’ in one family.
