• “Mosh Pit 2 Copy”, 2023 by @danwitzstreetart • Witz’s fascination with capturing the mosh pit imagery began in his early twenties as his career in the punk rock scene was coming to a close. With a return to painting full time, yet craving the physical intensity he experienced when performing, he began to explore that energy through his art. “El artista hace patente que está reproduciendo una fotografía casera con «fallos técnicos»: desenfoques, flashes, fueras de foco… visibilizando la huella de la transferencia fotográfica, que no solo no se oculta: se enfatiza. A la trama del bolígrafo se añade la textura de la reproducción realista de esos errores tecnológicos, con un protagonismo especial de los flashes en el espejo y, en la última época, de las marcas de comprensión de la imagen en sus viajes por los distintos dispositivos: del teléfono al WhatsApp o al correo electrónico. @kumkumfernando’s collectible, “Tomorrow”, was brought to life with the assistance of highly skilled, lacquer artisans in Vietnam, who he often collaborates with. The process was a labor intensive one that involved over 50 people. 15 years ago today, doors opened on @theartistshag second exhibition with the gallery titled, "Voyeur". This solo show explored themes of voyeurism inspired by the artist's own personal experience. In a 2008 interview with Arrested Motion, SHAG shares that, "being an artist gives me license to be a voyeur… When I was young and poor, I used to walk around my neighborhood almost every evening, just after dark. Many people had not yet closed their drapes or blinds, and I was able to look into their homes. I saw interiors through large picture windows: their good taste and bad, their family dynamic, what they were watching on television or eating for dinner, and what they felt comfortable wearing (or not wearing) at home. This was better than TV!” In addition to 20 new paintings, the show also featured 3 hanging sculptures, as well as custom wallpaper. FUN FACT: SHAG intentionally included a fish in each painting. While the fish is symbolic of something, he leaves it to viewers to figure out what it could mean.
