🌎 What is environmental sustainability? 🥤 Is it using paper straws? 🥒 Is it going vegan? 🔋 Is it driving a Tesla? 🌲 Today, let’s talk about this extremely important and misunderstood topic: environmental sustainability. 🤔 So why am I talking about this anyways? This is an animal wellness channel, right? While that’s certainly my microcosm and where I love to spend the majority of my time, none of that would be possible without understanding the way nature works - each of us and our animals is a mini version of planet earth and by observing nature, we can better understand how to create resilience and synergy in our lives and for all natural systems. 👩🏫 As I’ve started to build out my course materials, I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to talk more about this in order to teach about health and wellness. Because holistic health relies on making truly sustainable choices about what we feed our animals, the medicine we use, the care products we choose and the lifestyles we lead. ♻️ Sustainable living has become a trendy catch-phrase. The collapse of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs - and the ultimate victory of consumerism. I don’t normally give my posts a headlins, but this one felt right. I have been observing a group of workers, who are building an addition to the temple next to our house. They live on the building site while they work there. They have no shelter (they just sleep on the ground), they have no cooking facilities (they buy bakso, a cheap local dish with meatballs, from a bakso-guy who pulls up on his scooter every afternoon), they have no running water or bath facilities; they bath, go to the toilet, and wash their clothes in the little stream that runs through the village, and they definitely have no insurance or permanent jobs (when this project is finished, which is soon, they will find something else, somewhere else, and repeat), they have no connection to the village around them, but are looked at by the villagers with skepticism, and I really doubt that they ever experience the luxury og creativity and self-actualization. BUT, they all have smart-phones!! Can you believe it?! Every night I see the blue lights from their small screens lighting up their faces in the dark, making them look like bodyless ghosts. It appears that in our consumerist time-era owning a smart-phone is considered more fundamental and a more basic need than having access to clean drinking water, sanitary facilities, cooking facilities and even than having roof over one’s head. I find this mind boggling! And, as I wrote in the headline, this must be described as the ultimate victory of consumerism. If our most basic need is having access to a phone, so that we can watch tiktok and youtube shorts - if THAT is more important than shelter and clean water - the hierarchy of needs that Maslow developed in the 1940’s, and that I have previously redesigned by turning it upside down, when the slow-movement transformed our Maslowian basic needs (sleep, breathing, food etc) to the very purpose of life, must once again be rebuilt. Or maybe even exploded! Because consumerism of technology and entertainment isn’t even featured in the infamous pyramid. #culture #consumerism #capitalism #society #maslow
