From the famed chicken rice to the endless maid agencies (the helpers saying hello to passer by) to the feuding Banana tarts shops, and of course the yellow colored ‘Ghostbusters’ shop in the basement. 家里常吃Dona Manis香蕉派，创办人去年过世，心里还担忧着老店会不会后继无人，前几天路过加东上门一探，不但人潮如昔，隔壁还多了一间 @auntiepengbananapie ，售卖一模一样的产品。 原来负责制作糕点的Auntie Peng已另开新店，正在厨房里主持大局，Uncle站在店门口向熟客逐一解释：关系密切的老拍档，第二代接棒后理念不同，无奈拆伙。 所幸的是，一拍两散后一切都没有消失，新店售卖老味道，老店注入新生命，各表一枝，比邻而立。对于食客来说，且吃且珍惜。
I seldom get to go sketching on a Saturday morning but took a long train and bus ride to the East early in the morning to catch up with this bunch. Sketching this iconic building which is about 50 years old. First opened to the public in 1973 it is probably one of the oldest malls in Singapore. There has been several attempts for en bloc over the years and strangely I couldn't find any news if it was successful in their last attempt in April 2023. Interesting architecture with it's potholes in the facade. Reminds me of Golden Mile Complex which also have these potholes!! Famous chicken rice for lunch at the basement of the shopping centre. Can't remember the price back then but I think they never increase the price at all as the set costs about 8 bucks max. This artwork bears special memories for me. I grew up in the street next to this old Palace Cinema. In between showtimes, the empty parking lots became the private cycling circuit for my siblings, cousins, neighbours and I. We loved playing hide-and-seek around the ticketing booths. Those life-sized movie cardboard cutouts were premium hiding spots! 🤫 Evading the security guards also upped the thrill factor. 😜🤭 The scars on my elbows and knees still bear witness today to those fun moments. OLD PALACE THEATRE (1965-1992) The stretch of road from Katong Shopping Centre on East Coast Road to Still Road is commonly referred to as the “Roxy area” and was the traditional “Heart of Katong”. In the 30s-60s, amidst Singapore’s golden period of cinemas, 3 cinemas sprung up in Katong itself, namely, Palace, Odeon-Katong and Roxy Cinemas. After the war, the movie industry thrived further with established giants such as Shaw, Cathay and Eng Wah Organizations expanding their empires aggressively. Unfortunately, the 1970s saw the end of the cinema era in Singapore as audience’s attention turned away from local movies to blockbuster films imported from Hollywood. The introduction of television in Singapore also led to a decline in audience attendance in cinemas. Since then, Katong has seen rapid urban re-development. Many will remember Katong’s first supermarket, Tay Buan Guan, or the hugely popular, iconic Red House Bakery. These landmarks, like the old Palace Cinema, have since been redeveloped into residential or commercial complexes. Managed to try it and head down for the first time ever thanks to my dear friend🫶🏻❤️ 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐢𝐞 🍌- now priced at $3.30/slice Let’s talk bout their textures The tart crusts. 🥠it looks dense & heavy but my plastic fork could glide thru it like butter. Crispy and flaky, it melted in the mouth instantly with the soft and gooey banana fillings.🍌🤲 The layer of toasted peanuts & coconut shredding was also a cherry on top for me💕 And the interesting thing is! The top and bottom crusts are made differently from the side crust & u really can see and taste the difference. (Side crust is more of a play with layers with a croissant like texture)🤤🤤 The banana filling literally made up with oozy chunks of perfectly or overly ripened bananas, which gave that extra natural candy like sweetness reminiscent of vanilla, honey🍌 The effort the details the process the recipe, absolutely absolutely something I love about old school bakes. It’s an ongoing process with a deadline line coming up on 14 Aug for interested parties to submit their bid. Built is 1971, it was the first air conditioned shopping center. Katong Shopping Centre from the front porch of OMD Café and Bar - 2h in a Baohong cold press watercolour journal using Cadmium Yellow, Azure, Cadmium Red, Sap Green, and some Carmine, Umber and Payne's Gray for the accents and neutrals (signboards, tree trunks, holes in the top of the building) If an en bloc attempt has been announced, you can be assured that Singaporean sketchers will land on the space like fruit bats landing in my kitchen once my grandma's caregiver buys bananas. The hole in the wall tze char restaurants (serving local Chinese food and cheap alcohol late into the night), Mandarin schools, taekwondo kwons and ghostbuster agencies really give this place a character different from modern malls. After starting Nathan Fowkes' Landscape Sketching course on Schoolism, I decided to try using a vermillion Faber Castell watercolour pencil for my base lines to add warmth. The red peeking through the wash adds a playfulness that I like - gonna use this more next time. Found myself wishing I had white gouache or other colour pencils for adding finer details, which I guess is a good thing because it means I'm being stretched.

My dad used to go bowling every Thursday night together with his little league called Easy Going on the 7th floor of the Katong Shopping Centre. The bowling alley was called Ten Pin. Every Thursday after dinner and watching Knight Rider, my mom and I would go watch him bowl. Every Christmas Eve, Ten Pin would organise a fun mid-night bowl session and even allowed little kids, like myself, to bowl. I was given the opportunity to hit any pin and win prizes. And of course, my bowling ball ended up in the gutter every time. Our sketchers flocked east to Katong area, to capture the nostalgic Katong Shopping Centre. This building, built in 1973, and purportedly the first air-conditioned shopping centre in Singapore, houses a huge range of services (from optometrists, skincare merchandise, tailors, snooker lounges, to domestic helper agencies), and awesome eateries. Word has it there have recently been offers for en bloc sale of the whole building. We don’t know what the outcome would be, but thought it was a good time to come sketch and record this place, in case it’s true. It was a sweltering day, but we had fun and our sketchers came up with a ton of amazing work. And we had several new friends joining us too.
