Let’s change the way we train our core!! Rather than focusing on the burn we should focus on mindful movement of the spine. BackSync’s SEG-B does a great job of giving us feedback to drive intent and intensity during our core training! The spine is made up of 24 vertebrae and our goal is to move each one individually. The cross pelvic posture is the most common posture that we see in our clinic, and I am sure that it is familiar to you as well. The primary cause of this posture is the amount of time that we spend sitting. When we sit, our powerful gluteal muscles are not firing, or supporting our spine as they were intended to do. The lumber extensor muscles compensate for this, however, because they were not designed to bear this load, they transfer force directly to the lumbar discs. Sitting for long periods of time will also tighten up your hip flexors, pulling you further into an anterior pelvic tilt, and your abdominal muscles will suffer. We need to spend less time sitting; however, we need to go beyond this if we truly wish to relieve our back pain. Focus on directly addressing the four main components of the cross pelvic posture: weak glutes, tight hip flexors, weak abdominals, and tight lumbar extensors. Try this sample program: Each exercise 2-3 sets, set reps to about 80% effort: Side-lying hip abduction Kneeling hip flexor stretch Standing Pallof press Deep diaphragmatic breathing in prone position That’s it. This should only take about ten minutes; and can be done daily. You can supplement other exercises if you’d like, just stick to the basic structure. This is the exact sequence of exercises that many of my patients follow with great results. It is simple, easy to do, and highly effective. 1) 💥 STOP stretching your sciatica! ❌ Many of you with sciatica will feel like your glute or leg is always tight. Your instinct is to stretch this, but many of you will notice it might feel worse after! Stretching your sciatica is not a good idea and can make it worse! 🔑 The key here is to understand why your leg feels tight. A compressed or sensitive nerve will create this sensation in your leg as a warning sign that there is nerve tension. A sensitive nerve does not want to be stretched! When you stretch your hamstrings you’re pulling on the nerve and possibly re-agitating, the nerve and disc over and over, preventing you from recovering or even making it worse! Instead, these exercises could address the source of the problem and as a result, the symptoms in your legs will improve! If you do not have a plan to address the root source, you will be stuck with temporary relief and frustration living in pain, and we do not want you stuck! 📢Find this helpful? Share it with your friends! 2) 💥 Piriformis Pain ❌ Constantly rolling out your piriformis but the pain continues? Smashing something into it hoping for change but it just isn’t happening? You and everybody else! Many people are told their sciatica, glute pain, or low back pain is due to their piriformis and they need to “release” their piriformis but the methods just don’t work! This leaves you frustrated, spinning your tires, and still in pain! 🔑 The key here is that smashing your piriformis just doesn’t provide long-term results, in fact nerves don’t like compression so if you are trying to fix sciatica this could make it worse!
