Your very own Kozzie huts admin (@steph_skinner 🙋♀️) organised a women’s bikepacking overnighter for the first weekend of March, and 26 rad women of all levels of experience came out to camp out at Horse Gully Hut in the south of Namadgi National Park. The 30km route from rendezvous creek came with hot weather, a million creek crossings, and the occasional stretch of hike a bike but everyone made it to the end and made it a wonderful weekend ☀️ Photos of the weekend by @katealiice

After being severely damaged in the 2020 black summer fires, the original Courthouse at Kiandra has been partially restored. It’s easy to drive past and admire the structure. But stop and take a look and check out the interpretive signs to learn about the European history of Kiandra! @framework.designs recently rode out and back to Cascade Hut on her mountain bike. Tucked out the back of Dead Horse Gap along the Cascade Trail, the 10km ride to the hut offers some lovely views of the Australian High Country, and the tidy little hut at the end makes a perfect lunch stop.
Snowy Mountain Huts Today it was time to visit a hut down here in the Snowy Mountains and Northern Kosciusko that we have not been to before. Like so many this one was lost during the 19/20 bushfires, although it has been lovingly rebuilt. Originally built in the 1930s for grazing, Vickery’s Hut sits in a quiet wooded valley beside a bubbling brook, the hike to and out of the hut is however rather steep and gets the heart pumping for sure. On the way back to our base camp later this afternoon several mobs of wild brumbies were spotted not far off the highway which was great to see. A visit to the historic Kiandra Cemetery was also on the agenda on our return to capture some late afternoon photos. It is hard to believe this area was a bustling goldfields during the 1800s. @oldsteelguy recently rode the Boboyan Divide Route, a 45km gravel ride through Namadgi national park that provides ample opportunities to check out many of the huts through the park.
A bit of a long post today, but I hope you find this of interest. It may help to spark your curiosity for this fantastic area and help to explain why I am so passionate about the mountains. The 2 photos 📷 with this post are of the Dam Wall of Three Mile Dam near Kiandra and a history board. Many people 'assume' that 3 Mile Dam is part of the series of 16 Dams which make up the Snowy Mountains Scheme, this is UNTRUE. Although as you will see if you keep reading 3 Mile Dam does in fact have a history linked to the Scheme. Three Mile Dam was built by Chinese (and perhaps other nationalities) Miners in the early 1880's to provide water for sluicing the earth from the gold during the Kiandra gold rush. Three Mile Dam is said to have been built completely by hand, that is, by pick and shovel. There is also a 'race' which follows the contours of the adjacent hillsides to New Chum Hill. The race which was also hand built was to allow the water (with the help of gravity) to flow from the dam to where it was needed for sluicing the gold. THE LINK... Three Mile Dam was chosen for the first camp site for workers who were to undertake the exploratory work for the Snowy Mountains Scheme given it provided a ready made water supply for Surveyors, Bulldozer drivers, Engineers and so on. The initial camp was made up of a series of canvas tents.
