[Original Post 2022.10.10] Kiu Japanese Restaurant @kiurestaurant I was craving some sushi, but didn’t want anything too fancy like omakase. It has been difficult for me to find a decent casual sushi restaurant after the pandemic that serves fresh fish. The only casual places I’ve been able to find with good fish are omakase restaurants. Luckily, I remembered Kiu in Downtown Markham. I ate here a few times before back in 2020, and I remembered the fish as being a good quality, so I decided to go again. I ordered: Sashimi $35 9 Pieces – 5 Varieties of Fish (I believe I got kanpachi, shima aji, hamachi, hotate, amaebi) Kaisen Don $38 Chef’s choice sashimi of the day on sushi rice Quality is good just like before, but presentation is even better now. It sure helped to satisfy some of my cravings. I actually wanted more but decided this was enough. Fish was fresh, firm, great texture and quality. The restaurant itself looked very nice and modern; I loved it very much. Now that I think about it, I should have gotten the Tokusen Bara Chirashi Don for $88, it’s more filling. Came for their amazing miso cod lunch set but disappointed to find out they don’t have a lunch special anymore. It’s their regular menu price $26 for the miso cod, plus $12 to make it a set (rice, miso soup, salad, small side). This feels a little much for the portion sizes. I had gone for lunch, so the menu included Teishoku, a whole 3 course meal, which included miso soup, steamed rice, and tsukemono (assorted bites, usually pickled). I hadn’t had a really good piece of fish in a while so I chose the Gindara Miso Yaki. Grilled miso marinated black cod with saikyo yuzu sauce, and roasted cauliflower. A delight from start to finish. The freshness of the fish really was spot on, and it was so succulent and melt in the mouth. There’s a reason it’s also called butter fish.

Lunch was at a lovely spot nearby, where the excellence of service and quality of fish and seafood is top notch. @kiurestaurant was incredibly welcoming, and I started with the Oshi Sushi, pressed and torched pieces of anago aburi (freshwater eel) topped with sansho pepper and yuzu. The freshness of the fish and the soft, warm morsels of rice were fantastic. I love anything with yuzu.
