Lake Marian Track is a half-day tramping track from Hollyford Road in Fiordland to Lake Marian. The start of the track is 1 km from Marian Camp. Although it is considered quite a tough walk, it has become very popular, as reflected in the large car park amongst the trees. The track starts with a swingbridge over the Hollyford River / Whakatipu Kā Tuka, then an easy, well-maintained 10-minute walk through beautiful forest to the fabulous boardwalk above the Marian Creek waterfalls. Anyone can do this part of the track; it is a great option with limited time. From there, it changes dramatically to a rough 90-minute to 2-hour tramping track. There are rocks, slips, tree roots, mud and some clambering, and a 400-metre climb to 700 metres above sea level. On the upside, it is a mostly beautiful rainforest. Massive rock slides have created some open areas with great views. At the end of the track, you reach beautiful Lake Marian, surrounded by the 2,000+ metre Darran Mountains. The Te Waikoropupu Springs in @nelsontasmannz have some of the clearest water in the WORLD 🌏 It's actually insane how clear it is and there are lots of creatures lurking below (don't worry, they won't get you 🤪). We were hoping to spot some but the sun was shining so hard on the water that it was hard to see it all! Early morning or late arvo would definitely be an ideal time to visit. The walk was really beautiful through the forest and the path was easy and flat. It took us around 20 mins return to do the loop. ↔️SWIPE↔️ Today my RK "Earth Day" and Raw "Travel" challenge entries overlap. Here are two photos (various crops) of The Church of the Good Shepherd, on the shore of New Zealand's Lake Tekapo. This is a ridiculously beautiful part of perhaps the most breathtaking country I've ever visited, yet quite possibly my least favourite tourist town on the planet (due entirely to tourists and all that follows mass global exposure of a hidden gem). These shots conceal the true story - hundreds of visitors in one tiny location, a jam-packed car park and a rotating queue of tour buses. I hated every moment here and I was shocked at the anger I experienced in response to the total lack of respect the visitors paid in and around the church as well as the disregard they had for others, including their own co-travellers. This was a common theme I encountered during my almost month-long visit to the South Island and I can think of very few other countries where I've experienced the same level of disgust for mankind (for very much the same reasons). Visitors traipsing through gardens, native habitat and yes, even churches, plus those sullying waterways and amassing cigarette butts within a foot of a "Take Your Rubbish With You" sign in long dry grass were only part of the my problem with NZ. The way the natural wonders were being exploited to draw even more of these visitors was the other. I liken a cruise on Milford Sound to a ride I once went on in Disneyland. EXCEPT I enjoyed the ride 😅 I do wonder what sort of three ring circus our kids will experience when coming here with their own kids. Of course, I have stories like this from other parts of the world. I've walked away from some places regretting the decision to visit, aware I arrived "too late" to have an authentic experience. Much of the South Island was on the cusp of "too late" in January 2020. I really hope covid slowed down the "progess" of tourism and gave the Earth a little room to breathe. I’ve been putting off posting this picture for months, since August last year to be exact. As soon as I took it I knew it loved it. But that right there was the problem. I knew I loved it so much and I instantly became attached to it, I felt like every time I edited it, it just wasn’t quite right. I wanted it to perfectly reflect how I felt and what I saw in the moment I was there. It was just so beautiful it is hard to describe 😍 We were driving on the road to Milford Sound and had seen so many amazing sights. But then we came over this little bridge and put my window I saw this 🤩 A beautiful blue glacial stream with boulders strewn all through it with icy mystical forest behind. Then towering above was this amazing mountain range with wispy clouds floating all around. The sun had just risen and was starting to peak out behind the mountains and was creating this blinding glow. It was such a magical sight 💙 I quickly called out for my Dad to turn around and go back! I just couldn’t miss this photo. I knew within minutes the lighting conditions would be different and it would be gone. It was one of those moments when you just get overwhelmed by the awe inspiring beauty of this planet we live in. Marian Corner, or Marian Camp, is at the start of Hollyford Road at the head of the Hollyford Valley. A large parking area is beside the picturesque Hollyford River / Whakatipu Kā Tuka. An explanatory board describes the road-work camp that was established there in the 1930s to support the construction of the Milford Sound Highway and Hollyford Road, and a plaque memorialises the heroic actions of Davey Gunn in 1936. Davey Gunn was born into a farming family in Waimate, Canterbury. In 1926, he acquired private land from the original settlers, the McKenzie family. In 1929, he added four leases with 25,000 acres and set himself up at Deadman’s Hut by the Hollyford River. He developed and maintained many of the tracks in the region. In 1936, he became famous when he saw a small plane crash in Big Bay on the West Coast. He aided the injured passengers and covered the 90 km journey to Marian Camp in just 21 hours. Shortly after this, he started providing tours through the Hollyford for tourists, which he attached to his mustering activities. This subsequently became guided tours on the Hollyford track to Martins Bay. On his death, his son Murray continued guided tours and converted a work camp into Gunns Camp. Marian Camp and nearby Mount Marian, Lake Marian, Lake Marian Track and Marian Creek were named after Marian Little. She was Ernest Wilmot’s cousin, a Fiordland surveyor during the 1880s.
