Toni Morrison explores a fictional telling of a mother Sethe, who kills her infant daughter and attempts to kill her other children when slavecatchers track her down following her escape. Sethe, her sons and daughter Denver continue to live in the home where Beloved ( the only word that could be bought for the infants gravestone) died. When Beloved returns in the form of a young woman to the home, Sethe and Denver take a journey into themselves, their pasts, the tragedies and horror of slavery and the ramifications it had and continues to have in generations of families. It’s my first Morrison and my goodness, the strength of writing - history and emotion and searing insight coursing through it. If you can’t understand it all (I got a little lost with some of the magical realism and that’s all me not the book) you can certainly feel it all. It’s gut wrenching, unflinching, overflowing with love and devotion through all the pain. In Toni’s foreword to the book, she writes that language must get out of the way in order to render enslavement as a personal experience, intimately related to the reader, memory intertwined with present, forgetting intertwined with remembering. And I truly believe I experienced that as a reader. To be able to write a book, that’s not simply a book or a story, that literally vibrates and hums, to have that effect on readers, is a such a rare and powerful gift. I’m desperate to keep listening to Morrison, to keep soaking it all in. Onto the next I run.
Ed eccoci arrivati al secondo volume della “Billionaire Dreamland Series”. Questo è il libro su 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐧 ed 𝐈𝐫𝐢𝐬.. un 𝐠𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐲 𝐯𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 che vi farà uscire fuori di testa. Lui freddo e calcolatore.. aspira a diventare amministratore delegato dell’azienda di famiglia….. lei, la sua assistente, lo supporta (e sopporta) da anni rinunciando a pezzi della sua vita ed ingoiando un bel pò d’orgoglio. Parlando del secondo trope, si tratta di un fake dating romance (con tanto di 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞) perché il nostro uomo d’affari potrà ottenere parte dell’eredità solo sposandosi ed avendo un figlio. Sono queste le condizioni imposte dal nonno nel suo testamento. Ho letto questa storia in un paio di giorni. Si tratta di una lettura davvero piacevole e coinvolgente, soprattutto per quanto riguarda la protagonista femminile, il modo in cui affronta i suoi limiti (la dislessia) facendoli diventare punti di forza ed il suo saper tener testa al protagonista maschile (che in realtà si innamora per primo). Note dolenti: il finale affrettato e poco approfondito. Non l’ho amato come “The fine print” proprio per questo. Si risolve tutto in pochi paragrafi (un paio di pagine) ed alcune domande sono rimaste senza risposta. Mi appresto a leggere il terzo volume, magari alcuni nodi verranno sciolti nell’ultimo libro della serie (anche se si tratta di autoconclusivi). Makovou válku jsem četla na jaře 2022. Dračí republiku o dva roky později. Vzpomenout si na děj a důležité momenty prvního dílu byl děs, ale dalo se to. DR obsahuje dvě mapy a seznam osob. To bylo velmi užitečné a to nejen pro děj dvojky, ale rovněž pro vzpomínání viz výše. V rámci recenze na MV jsem měla určitá očekávání od druhého dílu, konkrétně že „se dočkám většího vysvětlení autorčina uchopení magie a další dávky historie světa a jeho propojenosti se vším“. Řekla bych, že došlo na určité úrovni ke splnění všech mých očekávání, i když by se daly ještě nějaké ty informace přidat. Takže trojko - nezklam mě! A jaké tedy bylo pokračování této série? Absolutně největším tahounem celého příběhu je: • rozvoj postav, • politika a strategie, • válčení a boj o moc, • zrady a zvraty. Stejně jako v MV se můžete těšit na: • velkou čtivost a emoční jízdu, kdy se od příběhu nelze odtrhnout, • bohaté, živé a detailní popisy, které dokáží přenést do samotného dění, • děj, co má velký spád a graduje přesně tam, kde má, • akci, napětí, zvraty, násilí, krev, mrtvoly, kosti, znásilnění…, • dílo, co nemá hluchá místa a přebytečné nesmyslné odstavce, • atmosféru tragické nevyhnutelnosti okořeněné božstvím a nezměrnou mocí, • bohatě vykreslené prostředí, se kterým autorka aktivně pracuje, • bravurně uchopené propojení fantasy prvků (magie jako božská moc ve spojení s člověkem) s čínskou historií a jejími válečnými konflikty, • drogy a závislosti na nich (proměna lidských myslí), • velký důraz na duchovní a náboženská témata, • velmi propracované postavy, jež se v průběhu děje rozvíjejí a ke kterým si raději nepěstujte citečky, jelikož autorka se s nimi nemaže, • otázky morálky, daň za neomezenou moc, zrůdnosti režimů, co znamená tzv. vyšší dobro a kdo o něm má právo rozhodovat, jaké je to míti v srdci pouze nenávist a hněv a toužit jen po pomstě… Jinak na závěr dodávám - hlavní hrdinka projde velkou proměnou a zkouškou, zda v dobrém či špatném, to Vám neřeknu… Ve spolupráci s @hostbrno 🐉 . #dracirepublika #thedragonrepublic #thepoppywar #rfkuang

„Neviem napísať poviedku, no môžem rozpovedať príbeh,“ uvádza Hassan Blásim v jednom zo svojich textov, ktoré tvoria zbierku s názvom Iracký mesiáš. Všetky ich spája precíznosť rozprávania, sú naturalistické a hlavne vynikajúce. Blásim totiž dokáže strhnúť vašu pozornosť a udrží ju po celý čas. V príbehoch umne prepletá postavy, o ktorých ľahko nadobudneme presvedčenie, že sú skutočné, že niekedy, niekde museli existovať. „Veľa sme sa hrávali a vymýšľali rôzne tajomstvá. Stvorili sme alternatívny svet ako odpoveď na naše odcudzenie v tom skutočnom. Pozerali sme sa na vojny dospelých a v televízii hľadeli na fronty požierajúce našich otcov.“ Blásim experimentuje, vkladá do svojich textov surreálnosť a magickosť, no stále sa drží hlavne reality svojej rodnej krajiny. Poukazuje na brutálnosť, utrpenie, nenávisť aj zlobu. Robí to však s ohromnou dávkou ľudskosti (nie súcitu) a miestami aj humoru. Všetko má vopred premyslené, aby nám umožnil vidieť to, čo sa prehliadame. „Jeden po druhom sme sa lámali ako sklenené figúrky roztrúsené po svete. (…) Už sme sa nestretávali. Nediskutovali. Nenávisť nám rozmliaždila naše detské prsty.“ Zbierka Iracký mesiáš (perfektne preložená z arabčiny Marekom Brieškom) prináša výnimočné príbehy, aké sú v našom súčasnom svete potrebné. Pretože ukazujú na dopad vojny a násilia, ale aj na ľudskú silu a nádej. „Veríš na podobné reči? Že sme len zvláštne tiene na tomto svete. Hlúposť. Opak je pravdou. Život je krásny, priateľu. Wylie es una escritora de thriller basados en hechos reales. Tras su divorcio y los problemas que tiene con el comportamiento de su hijo adolescente, decide dejar a su hijo con su exmarido e ir a terminar su último libro, para ello alquila una casa rural en Iowa donde años atrás ocurrieron los brutales asesinatos en los que se basa su último libro. Busca la soledad para poder centrarse en escribir, pero una fuerte tormenta de nieve, en la noche, cambiará su concepto de tranquilidad, en una casa en medio de la nada, con el móvil roto, un corte de electricidad y de línea telefónica provocados por el temporal, todo empeorará cuando su perro empiece a ladrar queriendo salir fuera de la casa, al abrir la puerta ven que fuera hay un niño pequeño, solo, desnutrido, desabrigado y con signos de hipotermia...... Thriller psicológico narrado en tercera persona, comienza con un ritmo tranquilo, pero no pesado, que irá aumentando según avancemos en la historia. La trama está dividida en tres historias. Conoceremos lo que ocurre con Wylie, con ese niño perdido y también conoceremos la investigación de Wylie sobre lo que realmente ocurrió en esa casa. Está bien estructurado, con una trama muy bien hilada, con giros en los momentos oportunos, con pocos personajes pero bien creados y con los que he podido empatizar. ✨I’ve recently read two very similar books, but oh so different.✨ They’re both popular YA fantasies, portraying a strong female character with a not-like-other-girls attitude and appropriate childhood trauma, who enter a hunger-games-like tournament in order to gain power. Everyone else is so much stronger than them (in one book the other contestants are vampires, in the second, they have special powers), but these two FMC’s are resourceful and can stand their ground. Both novels have some political intrigue and whispers of a rebellion. There’s also a love interest (obviously), who is strong but gentle, cocky and vulnerable (in front of her), hot but only has eyes for her. You know which type of book I’m talking about 😉 BUT. One was so bad I DNFed it. The characters were two-dimensional like the paper on which they were written, and the plot was so unoriginal, I could predict the ending halfway through. It seemed like it was written for the sole purpose of the love story, but the romance was so generic I couldn’t get invested. Everything was so bland, that even now, as I’m writing this, I almost can’t remember the major events, and I’ve put it down less than a week ago. I’m not saying the other one is peak literature, but it did have parts that had me devouring the words. The question now is which is which? 🤷♀️

Book Review 📖 I really wanted to love Girl Abroad by Elle Kennedy but unfortunately it fell a bit flat for me. I love Elle Kennedy and I will continue to read her books but I just couldn't get into this one. I felt this book just had a different vibe to her sports romances (I am a sucker for a hockey romance 🏒) The book was fast paced and easy to read with dual storylines - Abbey's semester abroad in the UK where she's involved in a love triangle with Jack and Nate; as well as trying to solve the mystery surrounding the Tulley family painting for her history class. I'm not a big fan of love triangles so that could be a reason why I didn't connect with this book. I didn't feel the passion, chemistry or tension between the characters. 📖 Tan poca vida 🖋️ @hanyayanagihara 📬 @lumenedit 🙋🏻♀️ Novel·la per a adults Aquest és un llibre que he dubtat molt sobre si llegir-lo o no. M’ha agradat? Molt. L’he viscut? Molt. M’ha fet sentir? Molt. M’ha emocionat, i d’aquí que per mi hagi estat una gran lectura i l’hagi valorat molt bé. Ara bé, amb el cap fred, em sorgeixen dubtes. És un llibre que tracta molts temes complexos i durs de pair i tots li passen al mateix personatge. Són tan greus que deriven en altres conseqüències mentals i físiques molt dures i cruels. Ho he trobat tan extrem, que algun moment demanava que l’escriptora el deixés de fer patir i el “fes una mica més real”. Fins a la pàgina 600 hi ha hagut trossos que se m’han fet un pèl llargs, però a partir d’aquell moment, no el podia deixar anar. La manera d’escriure de l’escriptora també m’ha despertat llums i ombres. M’ha agradat molt com descriu les malalties o situacions greus que es descriuen i com el protagonista expressa els seus sentiments. Ho ha fet de manera delicada i moltes vegades llegint entre línies. El que m’ha costat una mica, és que hi ha molts personatges (alguns innecessaris des del meu punt de vista) i mai sabies quan parlava un o un altre. De vegades estaves algunes pàgines sense saber qui era el narrador, fins que, aleshores, llegies alguna pista que t’ajudava a situar-te. Si això li afegim que la traducció té algunes errades de concordança i algunes paraules repetides que descontextualitzen i embruten el text, hi havia trossos difícils de seguir. Stet: An Editor's Life by Diana Athill At a party, Athill met a Hungarian refugee and fell in love with him. It was André Deutsch. The affair was short-lived but the friendship was not – he asked her to join the publishing company he was founding. Unbeknownst to Athill, this would be the biggest life-altering decision she would make – for the next 50 years, she would work as an editor in the constant company of Deutsch himself. Stet, is about Athill’s long career in publishing. Divided into two parts, the first is a brief recollection of Athill’s career. The setting up of André Deutsch Ltd, the many financial troubles, coming into unexpected money, and the endless hustle of keeping a publishing company afloat. Deutsch was a less-than-ideal boss and given to emotional meltdowns and outbursts. It is a fascinating portrayal of the industry – especially after the world wars and British colonies winning independence. In the second part of the book, Athill writes about her friendships with the biggest literary names of the 20th century. Though her affection for them varied in degrees, we don’t get whitewashed vignettes of these writers. I have a feeling Athill cared little for social modesty and was outspoken to a fault. We may know these writers for their brilliant creations but she saw them for the people they truly were – troubled, offensive, affectionate, remarkable. Book Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶🌶 May be about high school kids but they act like they're in college. I was pleasantly surprised on this book. It gave a few twist and turns I wasn't expecting. Ally is suddenly transferred to a new school mid year due to her mother dying. She immediately stands out and gets the attention of the most popular group of boys. Against her better judgment and Roman's, the leader the group, they fall for each other hard and fast. I gave the book 4 stars because even though it was fast paced and kept my attention I felt like there was a lot of side plots that were rushed through to just add to the main story line because it wasn't enough on its own. Minimal spice but that makes sense since they are in high school. She becomes best friends with her new dorm mate Mia and together they share a class with Dr. Tomas Deluca. When going into this first day of class she doesn’t realize her new professor is about to be her undoing. Meanwhile Professor Tomas Deluca, a man haunted by a scandal he’s desperate to leave behind as he strives for tenure at the prestigious Bennington University. He has given up on love and a future, focused only on his classes and the possibility of becoming a tenured professor. I also want to add that Trout leaves you wanting more… so hold on to your seats. My thoughts: As someone who went into this novel thinking that fantasy books were way too confusing, I am so glad I gave this a shot! So many of my bookish friends told me this one was a must read and that I would be hooked on the ACOTAR series if I could get through the first novel…. They were right. I really loved the balance of fantasy and romance in this book and the fact that this world wasn’t too complex for an amateur fantasy reader like myself. I did find that near the middle the book began to drag slightly and it is definitely a slow-burn when it comes to the romance. However, it was totally worth it because the last 100 pages were absolutely wild and I couldn’t put it down!
