Now that we're mobile again, we decided to complete the journey we set out on the day we broke down. Hill Country's Krause Springs became our treat to ourselves after a long couple of weeks. Our Houston friend we were originally heading there to meet stayed for the eclipse and fell in love with it. She wrote, “If there is a heaven in Texas, it's here.” We have to agree. While our original plans were to camp a night, we opted this time for a day. $10 gets you unlimited use of property between 9 am & 8 pm. This stunning 115-acre property has been owned by the Krause family for 50+ years, and it's listed on the National Registry of Historic Sites. There are two pools: one's a lagoon with a small waterfall, the other is more like a swimming pool. Both are fed by the springs. There's also an amazing garden with all kinds of plants & flowers, and there are chimes hanging in the trees that sound like singing bowls. You can listen to them while lying in one of the many hammocks. We felt so rejuvenated. We also made a pit stop beforehand to Muleshoe Bend Rec Area to see the bluebonnet fields by the Colorado River. It's such a pretty place, and just costs $5pp. We ended our day at a Harvest Host. @jesterkingbrewery is another slice of heaven. The brewery's situated on a 41-acre goat ranch. They have really good beer & wood fired pizza and, of course, a herd of dwarf goats that made our day. We'd love to find our way back for Doom Metal Goat Yoga, lol. We met some wonderful folks while there, and the staff couldn't have been nicer. (Also, caption the last slide, lol.) Looking for a fun place to swim? Check out Krause Springs about an hour west of Austin. This spring fed pool stays around 68 degrees, so it makes for a great place to cool off. They have several springs on the property you can explore. This place gets packed in the summer so plan a visit before the season really kicks in. Wandering Texas with these two. 🤍🤍 A little about the cemetery that I found online: “San Jose Cementerio (also called the Cementerio San Jose or the San Jose Cemetery) was established in 1919 as a resting place for East Austin's Mexican and Mexican-American population. At the time, cemeteries were segregated, so Mexicans were not allowed to be buried in white cemeteries. Cementerio San Jose served the community through the 1950s. Since it sits on donated land and doesn't fall under the jurisdiction of the Austin parks department for some reason, nobody is technically responsible for its upkeep. This resulted in the land becoming completely overgrown in the following decades. In the past few years, however, residents of the neighborhood and nonprofits have stepped up to maintain the land.” And how cool to see one of Thomas Dambo’s wooden trolls in Texas!
