In my installation How Great is Your darkness? is a crown with blown out candles. I´ve egged it, as was done in theaters in the past, if the performer was really bad. An egg symbolizes femininity and throwing perishable substances is a smelly protest. In Venice is Palma Il Giovane's magnificent painting of St. Lucy with a pair of eyes on a golden plate. It derives from a legend where St. Lucy tore out her eyes after receiving a compliment from her suitor - as she didn't want to marry because of her faith. She was threatened to be sent to a brothel to lose her virginity, but 10,000 men couldn't move her. The judge ordered her to be burned, but the flames did not touch her. Finally, a soldier cut her throat with a sword. St. Lucia’s Day is celebrated in Sweden, Norway, and the Swedish-speaking areas of Finland on December 13th. We select a beautiful able-bodied young woman with blond hair and dress her in a white gown and a candle crown. Her role is to sing and bring light to the poor, the elderly and the disabled. But based on the legend, an alternative for celebrating Saint Lucy’s Day could be sending women with disabilities (visual impairments) to prisons to show middle finger and have a serious talk with men guilty of violence against women. The tradition of choosing physically privileged Lucia feels a bit like cultural appropriation and distortion of disability history. « Petticoat Government » ⁠ @petticoatgovernment.party⁠ 20/04-24/11/2024�⁠ Le projet du pavillon belge de @labiennale d’art de Venise, par @nord.architectes, @denicolai_provoost @tonifull et @speculoosbruxelles ✨⁠ ⁠ À la croisée de l’art, des pratiques curatoriales, de l’architecture, de la typographie et de la cartographie, le collectif se saisit sur un mode collaboratif et horizontal du format de l’exposition pour s’en décaler via une série de chapitres et un potentiel fictionnel. Iels interrogent le regard porté sur des organisations collectives, populaires, alternatives et leurs modes de partage. Dans le cadre de la Biennale de Venise 2024, les membres de Petticoat Government proposent un scénario pluridisciplinaire à partir de géant·es folkloriques existant·es emprunté·es à différentes communautés en Belgique, en France du Nord, et en Pays Basque espagnol. Leurs déplacements performatifs vers l’Italie, en passant par le col de Resia le 9 mars 2024 puis de retour à Charleroi et à Dunkerque en 2025, insufflent un trouble joyeux dans le réel par la variété de jeux d’échelle et de tensions entre l’humain et le non-humain, le paysage et l’architecture, les frontières et leur transgression. À l’encontre d’une œuvre close, le Pavillon belge à Venise est imaginé comme un lieu de passage avec une optique en kaléidoscope. La scénographie aérienne et sonore qui dispose les figures gigantesques hors-sol interroge, par la place faite à l’oralité et à la co-construction de récits, l’origine de mythologies contemporaines et d’histoires séculaires. Dérivé d’une dénomination historique et d’un renversement de rapport de pouvoir, le titre suggère un bouleversement toujours en cours. In their practice, architectural elements, texts, drawings, paintings, sculptures, animations, sound, film, words, and scents play a significant role. The artwork adds new layers to any given space and Koo Jeong A manages to merge small intimate experiences and large-scale immersive works (text by South Korea pavilion abstract). We were refused entrance into With My Eyes, The Holy See Pavilion. We were not alone as over half the people in our time slot weee also refused. And as it was noon - there were no government offices in Canada open where they could verify our passport or Drivers License. So if you plan on seeing this. You need to register at least a week in advance. In the first name field enter your first and middle name or first name and middle initial (to match whatever form of ID you are using) in the second name field enter your last name. In a few decades from now, you would wish that you made the most of your talents, of your time. You would wish that you had made more what was already yours. 🥀 When you reflect back on this period, you will only regret what you did not do. You will only regret that you were so fearful of making a mistake, you never made a move. You will only regret than in an effort to be accepted, you lost your voice, your spark, your truth. You will only regret that you had allowed the things you had to slip through your fingers, because you thought you were not enough for them. You thought you were unworthy of your own life, as though that is ever something a person could be. You will regret how much time vou spent weeding at the surface and not pulling the hurt from the root. That you did not do what you knew you were meant to do, when you were meant to do it. That vou stayed when you knew you should go, that you kept delaying and lingering and placing all of your dreams into a someday that would never come. In a few decades from now, what you will know for sure is that the life you wanted was one in which you made the most of what you already had. That the pieces were already on the table, that the door was already in the room. You will realize that we are only ever meant to make the most of what is handed to us, both the goodness and the hurt. To pull out from inside of them gratitude, and awe; or wisdom, and learning. First time at the Venice Biennale and there was SO MUCH ART. Should there be this much art in one place?? Or maybe we need more spaces and gaps between to pause, process and reflect. Missed so many things but I feel super inspired to make work 🙏🏼 Spent a long time deciding on the cover of this carousel and I went with a quick photo I took from the pavilion that was, without a doubt, the absolute highlight for me: Yuan-Goang Ming's exhibition, "Everyday War," for the Taiwan pavilion. The artist writes: “From the dining table as a premonition of symbolic collapse, civil movements, ongoing defense drills after the lifting of martial law, and the ‘non-place’ under globalization, to various domestic scenes⁠ — all of these attempts to express the anxieties and unease of the complex world we live in.” Other pavilion highlights to name a few: Benin, Spain, Zimbabwe, Denmark. What an incredible experience!! It was a major undertaking to exhibit overseas and we are so happy with the results!! Pendant toute la durée de la Biennale, le pavillon accueille quatre artistes invité.e.s qui produiront et présenteront de nouvelles performances sonores, élargissant ainsi la définition d'une œuvre d'art collective. Dans ce contexte, la notion d'ouverture n'est pas liée à l'absence de limites, mais plutôt à l'appropriation de "l'autre" et à sa contribution à des scénarios ouverts. Le son et l'espace sont accordés : les éléments spatiaux - sol et murs - sont transformés en dispositifs sonores, façonnant progressivement une expérience immersive. Transcription of a letter of gratitude from artist Kim Yun Shin: Finally, on April 20, the 60th Biennale di Venezia opened to the public with a historic curatorship and a wonderful reception. I am deeply honoured and grateful to be part of this wonderful celebration of art and creation through �my work and by the kindest invitation of curator Adriano Pedrosa. Greatly humbled to be alongside multiple artists of a fantastic diverse sensitivity and commitment of all over the world that couldn’t otherwise have known. I feel profoundly indebted by the invitation and poignant vision of curator @adrianopedrosa and president of la Biennale @pietrangelobuttafuoco and former president #RobertoCicutto, as well as to all @labiennale organization and kind staff assistance. Honestly overwhelmed by the attention and recognition, could I say that it is not by will and that I was blessed. This, what I do, -at last- is no more than my labour, my philosophy, my life and my very own act of love completed only by grace and blessings. I would like to express all my gratitude for all the support to the many who made this impossible enterprise possible. And of course, the help from the Argentinian @cancilleriaarg through the thoughtful invitation to the great Argentinian Pavilion exhibiting the work of artists Luciana Lamothe, and the kind assistance to our team, made possible by Ms. Denise Preguica Bozic. To the generous lenders and the professional assistance from the team of @kukjegallery and @lehmannmaupin and all colleagues and visitors who expressed their love and support. The loving and laborious team who were also my family, my daughter Kim Ran, Mr. 김정집, Ms. 이윤숙, Mr. 김건, Ms. Cecilia Kang, Ms. Victoria Pereda, Ms. Diana Park, and all who supported us from far away. Thank you so much for this wonderful labour of love, life and art that we could accomplish together adding and making a new One, once again.
