Reminder that our final YUMMY Discussions will be tomorrow night. Date: Wednesday 1 May 2024 Time: 5.30–7pm Where: ACE, Lion Arts Centre, Adelaide (Kaurna Yarta) RSVP: via our bio. Join Yucky public program curators William Maggs and Hen Vaughan in conversation with V Barratt @syntacticalchaos for a discussion exploring abjection, as it relates to disability and gender. YUMMY is a two part discussion series accompanying Yucky, a group exhibition led by Sam Petersen that explores the personal and political complexities that exist as part of disabled experience. This discussion will focus on the concept of abjection through the lens of V's work with VNS Matrix @vns_matrix and other collaborations, as well as their recent PhD research on panic, to imagine possible figures for representing and embracing abjection, and the complicated boundaries of the body. V Barratt, a trans-media writer, performer and researcher, will draw on their extensive experience across artforms to speak to the creative and resistant possibilities of playing with abjection today. Taking pride in what is deemed 'yucky' whilst embracing what it is to be human outside of able-bodied value systems, YUMMY discussions take prompts from 'Yucky' and The Yucky Reading Room delving deeper into 'yuckiness' - and its inverse, yumminess - with invited thinkers. The Yucky Reading Room resource spotlight will be 'mMouth hHouse pPanic cCathedral' by V Barratt and 'Savouring Disgust' by Carolyn Korsmeyer. @carolyn.korsmeyer Prior reading is not necessary for attending as excerpts will be read at this event. This event will be Auslan and English interpreted and live streamed online. @zerodoodle @flaneuxe – Image: V Barratt (2022), RUPTURE, Bonedirt, Liveworks. Breathe: Grow Strong is one of my newer Breathe paintings. I love the knotty shapes created as trees grow, and wanted to incorporate this into one of my Long-Covid inspired Breathe paintings, using texture paste. There is a line of Morse code dots and dashes spelling out “breathe” growing along the wood grain. 🌺 Last week the artists from our Warwick Arts Hub created a beautiful wreath to pay tribute to the heroes of ANZAC. In true Arts Hub style, the wreath was made from fabric, buttons, and glitter paint. Vibrant red poppies were chosen as a symbol of remembrance and the green leaves represented growth and renewal. The wreath was presented on behalf of the Rise – Warwick Social Centre at the North Beach RSL subbranch ANZAC Day service. Introducing::: @idiotgrin This is “Sally The Sister” currently available on his platforms. Introducing Lee Lee from @idiotgrin. In his words::: Formerly a pro photographer, I came to drawing and painting after becoming ill with a neuro–immune disease in 2009. I was no longer able to leave the house for work or any other reason and needed to find a new way to create and bring some meaning into my daily life. I started drawing and soon had people asking me to do portraits and over time I developed my skills and interest. I am now earning a little money from my artwork and it’s helping to pay ongoing medical expenses. I am extremely grateful to anyone who buys a piece of my work. I love the idea that tiny bits of myself are sitting quietly in peoples homes all over the world. It’s as though I get a sneaky window into lives I will never live. I love it! Unfortunately won’t be exhibiting in the first show. We love having him in the collective. #artbility #disabilityarts #disabilityart

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Friday for the launch of CripTech and the Art of Access published by Leonardo through @mitpress 🔥 🔥Our work, and the work of everyone in this brilliant issue, is on the CripTech gallery website, here: https://leonardo.info/criptech/specialissuegallery Unfortunately, 98% of the puppetry community has no idea about the disability justice and disability artistry communities. [I'd LOVE to be proven wrong, and to be shown otherwise.] But for those who know and care about this soft crip magic: The CripTech Incubator spotlighted and made publicly accessible the work @ysoldestienon and I did together. [link in bio!] The incubator has created a platform that is an incredible opportunity to bring visibility to non-speaking people, and disabled artists who are cripping technology. AKA crip technoscience --> which is as far away from Silicon Valley & biotech culture as one can get. Our work came from our relationship and connection. That's the only way. And Make sure to check out the powerful work of: @amindervirdee @cogitechnaut @laura4lano @darrinmartin And everyone in this special issue. Thank you, @leonardoisast! And lastly, thank you to this beautiful tree for your company on this spring day in Brooklyn. 🌱🌱🌱🌱 #disability #disabilityjustice #crip #cripart #disabilityarts #poetry #communication #embodiment #writing #colonialism #technology #criptech #criptechnoscience #rett #rettsyndrome #rettsyndromeawareness #performance

Creating art is a powerful form of self-expression, but for people with physical and/or sensory impairments, traditional art tools can pose access challenges. Whether it’s limited dexterity, mobility issues, sensory processing differences, or other disabilities, these barriers shouldn’t hinder anyone from enjoying the therapeutic benefits of art. That’s why we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) ideas to adapt common art supplies like colored pencils, markers, paintbrushes, stamps, and more. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that expression through art is possible for all. Thanks to AwareNow Media for featuring me as their cover story for ‘The Vivid Edition: Where Artistry Meets Accessibility’! “Kam Redlawsk is a testament to the power of perseverance and the beauty of embracing one’s unique journey. A wanderer by nature, she traverses the world, soaking in its diversity, and infusing its essence into her art that vividly portrays her experiences, her struggles, and her triumphs. Beneath the surface of her vibrant creations lies a poignant truth-a truth shaped by the relentless grasp of GNE Myopathy, a rare and degenerative muscle-wasting disorder that has gripped Kam’s life…Through her art and her words, Kam seeks to transcend the limitations imposed by her condition, offering a glimpse into the depths of the human spirit and the power of expression. Where incredible artistry & commitment to accessibility meet, there you will find the incredible talent of Kam Redlawsk.” Watch/read ‘Illustrating Humanity’ interview with AwareNow where I share about advocacy, connection, truth & art, and answer questions I’ve never been asked, PLUS read the 24 other amazing stories @ link in bio at: @kamredlawsk AwareNow is a monthly publication of diverse collections of stories dedicated to raising awareness & creating social change. Their efforts capture an amazing array of personal & meaningful stories around the world including over 20 profiles each month! The founders are wife & husband, Allié & Jack. AwareNow did a piece on me a few years ago. Through this exchange I learned Allié, CEO & editor-in-chief, has MS, so this explains her connection to my writing & shares, and why she’s been such a caring supporter. I know how much effort it requires to do these projects, and this is a big publication to complete every month (add being a #spoonie). I admire people who do not for money or status, but because they truly care about something more than themselves. We need more of this, so I wanted to post a blurb about this exchange to highlight their efforts. INSPIRATION: Outside In’s Artist of the Month for April 2024 is Mark Noble (@mark_noble_art). "From a young age, people noticed I had a rare artistic gift, and I was encouraged to be creative throughout most of my childhood. As I got older, I did the odd commission here and there, but art was more of a hobby until relatively recently. I am now a full-time artist and have been lucky enough to exhibit across the UK, run workshops and sell work abroad. "For the most part, I taught myself how to paint, as I found it hard to concentrate and learn through traditional teaching methods, but I did manage to gain qualifications from Strode College and Bath Spa University – something I’m very proud of. I’m forever grateful for the help and support I received during my studies!" For our 2024 Benefit + Awareness Month, we're thrilled to be working once again with Christina Baltais (@wordsasmedicine), who joins our charity benefit from Tkaranto/Toronto - the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Christina (she/her) has lived with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis for the past 18 years. She draws on her personal experience of chronic illness to create collage, photography, sculpture, and makeup art, and has been involved in organizing fundraising and advocacy initiatives, such as the annual ME/CFS Art Auction and the May 12th @goblueformecfs campaign. Christina is a patient partner with ICanCME Research Network‘s steering committee as well as their medical education working group. ME is a deeply stigmatized and contested illness, and she hopes her work is one ripple in the wave of change the ME community desperately needs for greater awareness, compassion, research funding, and treatments. Catch Christina's work (and enter to win some beautiful autographed prints!) starting May 1st at Benefit.OperaMariposa.com 🦋 [Image description in pinned comment by @borbusoperaticus. They will be in conversation with V Barratt @syntacticalchaos for a discussion exploring abjection, as it relates to disability and gender. Date: Wednesday 1 May 2024 Time: 5.30–7pm Where: ACE, Lion Arts Centre, Adelaide (Kaurna Yarta) YUMMY is a two part discussion series accompanying Yucky, a group exhibition led by Sam Petersen that explores the personal and political complexities that exist as part of disabled experience. RSVP via the link in our bio. @zerodoodle @flaneuxe – Image 1: YUMMY Discussions: Disability Pride (2024), design by William Maggs. Introducing Harvest - Blue Prints and Magnitudes!! Vitrine Exhibition by Felicia Byron, Curated by Jack Hawk Felicia Byron’s Harvest – Blue Prints and Magnitudes draws inspiration from Gwendolyn Brooks’ observation in the poem Paul Robeson, that “we are each other’s harvest.” Through the intricate use of textiles and embroidery, Byron stitches together the fabric that connects the stories of individuals, places, and emotions. Rooted in her identity as a visual storyteller, she seamlessly entwines portraits of community with an Afro-futuristic dream of collective crip liberation. Centering the camera as a tool for world building, Harvest is an invitation to share in the connections and the voices of those often ignored, unheard, and misunderstood. Presented in partnership with the @contactphoto Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. #feliciabyronphotography #harvestblueprintsandmagnitudes #contactphotographyfestival #torontoartist #torontophotographer #ontarioartist #canadianartist #photographyexhibition #textileart #contemporaryartist #disabledandproud #disabledartist #disabilityarts

Working on my DYCP on Createch. today. I had a plan on how I would do this. But that was a plan based on not exactly knowing what I was talking about. And as I follow the plan I learn and realise the plan will not develop my creative practice meaningfully. So the plan changes. And in technology the question seems to be how far do I need to go the path of bring a technologist in order to become an artist in this sphere. Am I looking down the barrel of being a coder? #dycp #ai #art #coding #disabilityarts

🎨🖌️"I am a messy-hands equal happy kind of person. I love nothing better than knowing I’ve had a good hour if paint is embedded under my fingernails, splashed round the walls, (including all over my wheelchair), or I am decorated up to my elbows! For many years, charcoal and quink ink were my go-to materials. One of my favourite pieces to make was a drawing of 6ft clam shells using quink and a willow stick. I remember my elation at selling it (I think it got bought up by a dentist practice in Hampshire!) These days I try to get more colour into my life, so if I’m just needing to play or to loosen up, gouache is probably what I currently reach for: I’ve been enjoying smooshing (yes, that’s a technical term!) and mark-making with my old disabled parking badge and a water-spray bottle - especially in my current favourite sketchbook which has an unusual (challenging) panoramic aspect. But that’s just to warm myself up and get in the ‘flow’. I spend a lot of time ‘throwing paint around’, normally on a large scale, at boards or canvasses. These often become abstract expressionist pieces which relate to the word, poem or prayer I wrote on the surface before I began painting. And last year I discovered gelli printing, so I’m having fun playing with different methods and sizes of that to see how I can make it an expressive medium for me. On seizure days, it’s back to the iPad and the app Art Set 4 to make mixed media digital paintings, which means I can still create in bed, even when I can’t sit up properly." 🎨🌈 Visit the link in bio to find out more about @katekenningtonsteer and her practice! #DAiSYChain #daisychainsurrey #DisabledArtist #DisabilityArts #SurreyArtist #ArtistSpotlight #ArtistsofInstagram #SurreyArts #DisabilityArtsSurrey #KateKenningtonSteer #KKSArtist #ArtisticExpression #MessyHandsHappyHeart 🖌️💖

Last week, we had a delightful afternoon visiting @pop_gallerystudios for their Open Studios and Art Fair in Port Adelaide 🎨 We loved being able to get an inside look at a variety of artist studios, including checking out the @tuttiarts and @tuttivisualartsstudio space right next to the POP Gallery space. We had a chat with disabled artist Yasemin Sabuncu @hi_yasemin about her multimedia practice, and learnt about the preparation of her upcoming @salafestival exhibition at @praxisartspace which will feature photographic works. We also spoke with artist @eilidhberenyi whose powerful practice reflects her medical and health experiences - she is definitely an artist to follow! At the art fair we stopped by plenty of stalls including @oscaarts @themilladelaide and @praxis_artspace_studios where @tom.phillips.9028194 dramatic sketched works depicting the human struggle caught our eye. If you're planning a trip to the POP Gallery, you can find their venue access information on the Contact Us page of their website. Awesome day with @accessartsandadventures (AAA) @shellygoggles #wellnesswednesday AAA hosts creative events for the disabled community, to bring people together and start conversation! For #fashionrevolutionday we explored screenprinting techniques to customise clothes, lengthen their life + increase their value. We debated how awesome it would be to customise and adapt clothes to fit each person's unique body shape and different needs. Firstly to be comfortable, then more functional but also to LOOK BETTER!!! ❤️ Tailoring, adjusted hems and improved fit - the DREAM!! 😫 FASTENINGS…everyone’s problem! ❤️Pockets on the lower legs of trousers for easy access in wheelchairs. 😫 BRAS!! (not designed to be put on by people with different bodies and flexibilities). 😫 Velcro..boooo…sticks to everything (and ruins fabrics) ❤️ Zips…both sides, more openings….everywhere! Comfy soft, stretchy clothes…fun and fashionable..not grannyish! AFFORDABLE!! We’re hoping to persuade #DoverRepairCafe to come and make their tailoring and adapted clothing dreams come true! 🙏 AAA are also in need of volunteer facilitators - so if you’re free for a couple of hours a month, please get in touch. Big thanks to Amelie from #ClosingtheLoop and FF artist @jessicaleoniebear @lisa_oulton for supporting the session. #startafashionrevolution #adaptivefashion #fashionrevolutionweek #InclusiveFashion #awareness #dover  #bethechange  #disabillityinclusion    #InclusiveDesign #DisabilityArts  #Disability  #Arts  #DisabledArtists

NEW ORIGINAL ARTWORK FOR SALE I am a disabled artist on a mission to make the world a better more inclusive place for all! Do you want to see a better more inclusive society ? Do you want a world in which disabled people are represented and included ? Then my art is for you. Title - Karen Burns - Women's Health Series 2024 Thank you very kindly to Karen Burns for this fabulous collaboration Here is Karen's poem "Karen's Story" They say I am in the prime of my life, So why's it that I struggle and strife? Instead of having fun, and kicking back, Daily pains a reminder of what I lack. At times I feel younger in my mind, Yet my body's ageing in ways unkind. I pinch myself to remember who I am, As society seems like they don't give a damn. Holding on to the days that made me proud, Singing my achievements ever loud. Whilst this doesn't make me better you see, I discovered myself, found a hidden part of me. And though my pains will never go away, I hope to understand their cause one day. This hope is what keeps me grounded, In a chaotic world, in which I'm dumbfounded. Materials - Watercolour and Gouache, size (22.9 x 30.5 cm) unframed Price - £481 + P n P ($615US + P n P) Prints - £30 + P n P DM to purchase ID Long red haired woman with blue eyes in strong sunshine, she is wearing a graduation cap and gown and is holding a glass of champagne to celebrate #BarbaraHulmeFineArtist #PortraitPainter #WatercolourPortraits #PortraitArtist #DisabilityArts #DisabledArtist #DisabilityInclusion #FigurativeArt #ContemporaryArt #CollectableArt #ArtForSale #ManchesterArtist #InternationalArtist
