SailingLife has its twists and turns. So in 2010 in Cape Town we met a Brazilian sailor who quickly became Brent’s best friend. This was mainly as Brent was, how can I say, a bit overweight from too many business dinners. So he was not at all offended when this Brazilian said that he named his Leopard 46 Fat Boy after his best friend who had passed away and that Brent reminded him of that friend. 😂😂😂 We stayed in touch and we met Nuno Pinho every few years in Miami, in France etc. Now we are particularly delighted he is going to be in Rio soon after our arrival on Tuesday. The promise of a calm night after a pretty hectic one yesterday as we crossed a cold front. We sailed through the front in third reef but still doing 8 to 9 knots which made for a bumpy ride. The previous day we prepared the front’s arrival by making sure there were no loose items anywhere, checking grab bags and preparing easy to reheat food. Chicken tikka masala in the thermal cooker, a fresh seeded loaf and a blueberry crumble kept us going through the night. Make sure you watch Brent’s movie on our profile for an in detail explanation! San Sally raising their sail. 3. San Sally doing a test run. 4. Dock for sloops following their race or awaiting race time. 5. Close up of the hull for Number 24. There are very strict rules about boat composition. The principal concern with the design of Bahamian Sloops is maintenance of traditional grace and beauty of the hull and rig while also retaining familiar Bahamian building methodology that allows any Bahamian builder to construct an entry. 6. Main Street downtown George Town. 7. Sloops docked including Barbarian - a class B sloop who came in 6th today. 8. The historic St. Andrew’s Anglican Church established in 1802. 9. Racing sloops docked in Elizabeth Harbor. 10. Racing sloops leaving the colorful docks in Elizabeth Harbor. The more I’ve experienced and learned about the Bahamian culture (and food) the more I love everything about these stunning islands. Dawn on Wednesday 24 April Is it a welcome sight after a night of squalls and wind shifts? It seems to promise more of the same! Last night a sudden wind shift hooked a genoa sheet around an electrical conduit. Brent sprained his wrist badly trying to undo it and I hope it is just a bruise and sprain. However these things can take a long time to heal. A mast camera came toppling down too! I had been finding broken pieces of cir-clips on the deck but we hadn’t been able to figure out where it came from. Well I guess these things are bound to happen on long passages. We have done some 4000 miles since Cape Town with just over 1000 to go to Rio. That is if we get there before a cold front hits around 1 May. Weather predictions indicate that the wind will die tomorrow so it will be slow from there onwards for a few days. That’s it from me peeps! Today started with a sunrise under low clouds and it finished in the same way. In between we had bands of fair weather with light winds and squalls with higher winds and more turbulent seas. The picture here is during a fair weather moment but our stories show some of the more squally weather. It strikes me that this pattern sums up life’s pattern: some rough bits and some sweet smooth bits, only we are having it all in one day! As I go into the night under a full moon in Scorpio I feel blessed that its light will help us to keep safe.
