In my last post, I asked if you were choppers or keepers when it came to the daisy-like flowers of this VERY popular garden plant we often just call 'tractor seat plant' (I bet you can tell why 😆). Whether you keep the flowers on for your pollinators, or chop them off and just grow it for the impressive foliage, you're in good company.... This is one of THE most popular foliage plants in use in the landscaping industry at the moment, popping up in almost every garden I visit and a regular star in those inspirational garden design photo posts we all love. The good news is, Ligularia reniformis 'Giganteum' is super easy to grow! Though some protection from slugs and snails 🐌 is advised. But, if like me you are a little lax in that department, no worries, damaged foliage can be snapped off at the base, & fresh new leaves will soon appear 🌿. Tractor seat plant is a great choice for those tricky, shady garden areas such as under trees and, as it's a bog plant, it'll thrive in the damper parts of your garden too. In the shade, the dramatic, evergreen leaves are light-reflecting, brightening up gloomy spaces and looking gorgeous. It's best not to this plant in full sun, unless you're going to give it LOTS of water💧, otherwise the large sculptural leaves hang their heads & droop like crazy 😕 on hot days🙈. The foliage provides a fantastic contrast against any number of companion plants. I grow mine beneath large trees paired with acorus, creeping jenny & ajuga ❤️, and I've recently added in some 'Silver Lady' ferns & a yellow spotted ligularia. What will you pair yours with 🤔? If you need ideas, this plant features in my plant combo eBook guide 'The Flowers & Foliage Collection' (only $14.95 or bundle and save with the 'NZ Native Collection' . Just comment 'combos' and I'll send you the link via DM 😀. #plant #gardenplant #tractorseatplant #ligularia #foliageplant #foliage #plantsfordamp #plantsforshade #shadeplants #subtropicalgarden #lushplants #plantstolove #gardening #garden #gardenplant #gardenplants #plantsofinstagram #landscape #landscaping #landscapetip #gardeningtips #plantingtip #gardentip #gardeningtip #gardendesign #garden

Here are 5 tips to prevent salt damage to your lawn! #LandscapeTip #snowremoval

2/2/2024, 1:00:47 AM

Did you know that how you do snow removal around your house now has an effect on how your lawn will do in the spring? Really! That snow is starting to pile up out there. When you go out to remove snow from your walkways, sidewalks, and driveways, here is one tip that if you follow it will help your lawn be healthier in the spring: When shoveling, try to avoid piling snow on your lawn as much as possible! This will help to prevent snow mold from developing in your yard. Snow mold is a fungus that occurs under heavy snow cover, and deep, compacted snow piles on your lawn will be heavier and take longer to melt, creating the ideal conditions for snow mold. If you don't have anywhere else to pile snow and have to put it in your lawn, then one way to help prevent snow mold is to go out and break down these snow piles with a shovel once the snow begins to melt. Scatter the snow throughout your lawn to help the snow melt faster and to prevent snow from weighing down sections of your lawn. #LivingWaterFam #SnowRemoval #snow #snowtips #shovelingsnow #brrr #snowday #LandscapeTips #winterlandscape #livingwatertips #landscape #landscapetip #wintertime #winterlandscapetips #winter #wintertips #lawncare #lawncaretips #lawncaretip

It looks like we have quite a bit of snow coming our way tonight and tomorrow. Snow removal is very important for the safety of you and your loved ones, but if not done properly, snow removal itself can be a dangerous activity. It can lead to injuries, falls, or strain on the body. To help avoid that, here are a few Snow Removal Safety Tips: -Wear the right shoes. It will be slippery! -Make sure you are wearing the proper clothes. The work may make you feel warmer, but it is still cold out there! -If shoveling snow, as much as possible, push the snow rather than lifting it. -If you do need to lift, lift with your legs, not with your back. And throw snow in front of you rather than over your shoulder. -Take breaks and do not work to the point of exhaustion. -Make sure there is someone with you or nearby who knows where you are and can help if something does happen! Stay safe out there! #LivingWaterFam #TuesdayTip #SnowRemoval #TuesdayTips #snow #snowtips #shovelingsnow #brrr #safetytips #snowday #LandscapeTips #winterlandscape #livingwatertips #landscape #landscapetip #wintertime #winterlandscapetips #safety #winter #wintertips

Ice is inevitable in the winter, and it looks like we have a lot of it coming our way! De-icing roads, sidewalks, driveways, and walkways is an important step in keeping you and your loved ones safe! However, it is important to be careful around plants when using a salt-based de-icing product as they can cause salt damage to your plants. The salt in de-ice products, if absorbed through leaves or roots, leaches moisture from the plant cells and causes the tissues to dry out. Here are a few tips for avoiding salt damage to plants: 1. Be careful when you put de-ice down to avoid contact with your lawn, plants, and the area around plants. 2. Burlap panels are a great way to protect plants that are along roads or sidewalks and are likely to come in contact with salt spray. You’ll want to be careful that the panels are far enough away from your plants that they don't come into contact with the plant. Wash the burlap panels well between uses to rid them of crusty salt build-up. 3. If the snow plows do come through and throw salty snow onto your plants, if possible promptly remove as much of the salt to a location far away from your plants’ root zones. This will help prevent the melting snow from moving salt into the soil immediately around your plants. 4. If you aren't able to remove the salt before the snow melts into the ground around your plants, you can help to flush it out by deep watering those plants in the spring after all the snow has melted. #LivingWaterFam #LandscapeTips #winterlandscape #lawncaretips #lawncare #lawncaretip #livingwatertips #landscape #landscapetip #wintertime #winterlandscapetips #deice #deicing #safetytips #safety #winter #wintertips #brrr #plantcare #plantcaretips #plantcaretip #weloveplants

DON'T plant this plant in full sun. 🙈 I see this all the time in garden and landscaping posts and every time my heart sinks. BECAUSE, when planted in full sun conditions, those large sculptural leaves hang their heads and droop like crazy 😕 on hot days, and to be blunt, that just looks plain ugly. And TBH, I don't know why you'd waste it on full sun position 🤔when it's such as great plant choice for those tricky, shady areas such as under trees 🌳. To use this plant well, it's also good to know that it's a bog plant. So, it'll thrive in the damper parts of your garden. Fall Clean Ups are very important! If left on your lawn too long, leaves and other fall debris can suffocate your turf and encourage disease. To avoid this, make sure to remove all fall leaves and other debris from your lawn and out of flower beds before winter. To make the clean up easier, rake up leaves in stages as they fall rather than waiting until the end of fall when all the leaves have dropped. This makes the piles less fun to jump in, but the work much easier! It also lessens the risk of ending up with a thick layer of leaves left on your lawn under snow should snow come early and stick around like it did last year. Also this is a reminder that minor to medium amounts of leaves on your lawn at the time of your fall lawn applications are ok! It will not negatively affect your application. However, if your grass is almost completely covered by leaves, please clean up fall debris prior to your scheduled lawn applications. If there is extensive debris still on your lawn at the time of application, we may have to reschedule your service. As always, you can message us, ask your tech, or give us a call with any fall landscape questions! With the fall weather in full swing, here are some important things to know about fall lawn and landscape care: -Your fall applications are very important to the health of your lawn and trees next season! These are cold weather applications and will not be negatively affected by low temps, rain, or even a little bit of snow. Minor to medium amounts of leaves on your lawn at the time of application are also ok and will not interfere with application results, but if your grass is almost completely covered, please clean up fall debris prior to your scheduled lawn application. If there is extensive debris still on your lawn at the time of application, we may have to reschedule your service. -If your sprinklers have already been blown out, great! This will not affect your applications. The fall rains will water them in for you! -If you are not yet scheduled for a sprinkler blow out, call and sign up now! (Call Ron Davis Lawn Care and Landscaping at 509-309-2621.) - Make sure to clean all fall leaves and other debris off of your lawn and out of beds before winter! As you take down all your halloween decorations in your yard, it's a great time to clean up fall leaves as well! Remember, if fall leaves are left on your lawn too long, they can suffocate your turf and encourage disease. To avoid this, make sure to remove all fall leaves and other debris from your lawn and out of flower beds before winter! We recommend doing this in stages as the leaves fall rather than waiting to do one big clean up after all the leaves have dropped. While this makes the piles of leaves less fun to jump in, there are a couple reasons we recommend doing it this way: 1. Raking and collecting the leaves will be much easier in smaller batches and before they get broken down and compacted by rain or snow. 2. More importantly, cleaning up your leaves in stages lessens the risk of ending up with a thick layer of leaves left on your lawn under the snow should snow come early and stick around. Between how late the leaves fell last year and how early the snow came, there were a lot of lawns in our area that ended up under a thick layer of leaves, as well as snow, all winter. This resulted in severe snow mold fungus, as well as other health issues in lawns in the spring. So to avoid that, we recommend raking up the leaves in stages as they fall over the next several weeks! #LivingWaterFam #lawncaretips #lawncaretip #lawncare #livingwatertips #falllawncare #falllandscape #landscapetips #landscapetip #fallishere #landscape #happyfall #FallLawn #autumn #fallleaves #fallcleanup #autumnleaves #falllandscapetips #falllawncaretips #cleanup #fallcolors #pilesofleaves #rakingleaves #pumpkin

Those leaves are definitely falling in earnest now! If left on your lawn too long, leaves can suffocate your turf and encourage disease. To avoid this, make sure to remove all fall leaves and other debris from your lawn and out of flower beds regularly! If you currently have a lot of leaves on your lawn, we recommend that, if you are able to, you do a quick clean up today before we get a lot of rain and potentially some snow (yuck!) tonight and tomorrow. Your lawn will thank you for it! We recommend doing this for a couple of reasons: 1. Raking and collecting the leaves will be much easier before they get broken down and compacted by rain or snow. 2. More importantly, while we definitely don't anticipate this snow to be heavy or lasting, cleaning up your leaves now (even if all of your leaves haven't fallen yet) lessens the risk of ending up with a thick layer of leaves left on your lawn under snow should snow come early and stick around. It is for these reasons that we recommend raking your leaves up in stages as they fall rather than waiting until your trees are completely bare to do one large clean up. #LivingWaterFam #TuesdayTip #tuesdaytechtip #tuesdaytips #lawncaretips #lawncaretip #lawncare #livingwatertips #falllawncare #falllandscape #landscapetips #landscapetip #fallishere #landscape #happyfall #FallLawn #autumn #fallleaves #fallcleanup #autumnleaves #falllandscapetips #falllawncaretips #update #serviceupdate #cleanup #fallcolors #pilesofleaves #rakingleaves

This is just a reminder that your fall lawn applications are specifically designed for this time of year! That means that they will not be negatively affected by cold or freezing temperatures and precipitation. In fact, fall precipitation helps to water them in! On that point, it is absolutely ok to have these applications done if your sprinkler system has already been blown out and turned off for the winter. Fall rain, dew, and frost will water all of this in for you, and it is ok if it takes a few days for that to happen! Lastly, those leaves are really dropping now! Again, these apps are designed for fall, so minor to medium amounts of leaves on your lawn at the time of application are ok! It will not negatively affect your application. However, if your grass is almost completely covered by leaves, please clean up fall debris prior to your scheduled lawn applications. If there is extensive debris still on your lawn at the time of application, we may have to reschedule your service. Garden Tip: Thinking ahead to winter, it's a good idea to look at your garden now and strategize where you will pile your snow. What's growing in those places now? Typically, turf grass is a safe place to pile snow, but a number of kinds of perennials and shrubs don't like that at all. It's not such an issue when the ground is frozen. But when it is not, and the plants' roots are sitting under a heavy pile of snow that is constantly melting and saturating the soil, they can suffocate or rot. We've often said that more plants are killed by winter wet than by winter cold. The six plants pictured here are some we've heard the most from home gardeners over the years struggling with due to winter wetness. They would be better planted away from the edges of driveways, streets or paths that are shoveled in winter to avoid piling snow on top of them. They include: 1- Brunnera 2- Heuchera/Coral bells (but this also applies to Heucherella/foamy bells) 3- Shasta daisies/Leucanthemum 4- Spike speedwell/Veronica 5- Butterfly bush/Buddleia 6- Lilac/Syringa ❄️Need to remember this? Mulches for Landscaping need to be MSC Certified to be Wildlife Safe Avoiding the use of any nonCertified Mulches to reduce risks of contamination of soils & harming local wildlife. According to the Center for Agriculture, Food & the the primary concern with landscape mulches isn’t the dyes in colouring; but sourcing of wood chips contaminated w/toxic substances Recycled waste wood used to make mulch is contaminated w/various chemicals (such as creosote & chromated copper arsenate/CCA). CCA is the chemical that is used in the manufacturing of pressure treated wood prior to 2003 Problem with CCA Treated Wood? CCA contaminates soil killing beneficial bacteria, insects& young plants... in addition to being harmful to the people spreading these mulches; & any animals who dig in it. Check the mulch that you buy has MSC Certification Logo on the packaging. MSC stands for Mulch and Soil Council (they certify mulch/soil CCA-free. Colored mulches? Dyed mulches break down much slower; wood requires nitrogen to break down so can rob plants of nitrogen they need to survive when breaking down; natural mulch retains moisture so enables plants to utilize nitrogen Better. If considering colored mulch check it’s not construction & demolition waste wood. At this time, there is no evidence that the dyes used to color mulch are what is toxic to animals so such materials are used for colored mulches because being very dry it readily absorbs coloring agents; BUT most of the wood that is being used for making colored mulch comes from recycled wood (scraps from wood pallets & reclaimed from construction/demolition waste so must check sourcing to avoid CCA treated material) #squirrel #wildlife #nature #mothernature #landscaping #landscape #landscapingtips #landscapetips #landscapingtip #landscapetip #mulch #mulching #safemulch #safeforwildlife #safeforpets #safeforanimals #squirrels #wildanimals #wildandfree #safemulch #safemulching #certifiedmulch #mulchandsoil #mulchandsoilcouncil #MSCcertified #MSCcertifiedMulch #msc #certified #certifiedproduct #certifiedproducts

TIP TUESDAY | Gator bags (see picture 2) are very effective in keeping water on newer trees. If trees are less than 4 years old and are yellowing or losing leaves, they are stressed. Contact us if you'd like us to install gator bags. 🙌🏼 If you suspect an issue with your irrigation system, contact our office right away. Do not turn off your system unless absolutely necessary.

🐛 If you have bagworms on your tree, here are some steps you can take to address the issue: 1. Identify the bagworms: Bagworms are caterpillars that create protective bags made of silk and plant material, which they attach to tree branches. They can be identified by their cone-shaped bags that hang from the branches. 2. Manual removal: If the infestation is small, you can manually remove the bags by hand. Wear gloves and carefully pick off the bags, ensuring you remove both the bag and the caterpillar inside. Dispose of the bags in a sealed bag or container to prevent reinfestation. 3. Pruning: If the infestation is extensive, you may need to prune heavily infested branches. Cut off the branches at least 6 inches below the last visible bag to ensure you remove all the caterpillars. Dispose of the pruned branches away from the tree to prevent the spread of bagworms. 4. Biological control: Consider introducing natural predators of bagworms, such as birds or parasitic wasps, to help control the population. You can attract birds by providing bird feeders or birdhouses near the infested tree. 5. Insecticides: If the infestation is severe and other methods have not been effective, you may consider using insecticides. Consult with a professional arborist or local extension service to determine the most appropriate insecticide and application method for your specific situation. Follow all instructions and safety precautions when using insecticides. 6. Preventive measures: To prevent future infestations, maintain good tree health by watering, fertilizing, and pruning properly. Regularly inspect your trees for signs of bagworms or other pests, and take prompt action if you notice any infestations. Remember, it's important to act quickly to control bagworms as they can cause significant damage to trees if left untreated. 💚 #landscaper #landscapetip #bagworms #sisters landscaper #landscapetip #bagworms #sisters #familybusiness #tulsaoklahoma

🌳 Quick Summer Tip: Watering your newly planted tree properly is crucial for its growth and health! When freshly planted, daily watering of the roots is essential for at least a couple of weeks, except on rainy days (you can feel the soil too to help judge what it needs). You can then gradually space out watering to every few days then more as roots establish. Don't forget to adjust for intense summer heat or drought by increasing the frequency to keep your tree happy and hydrated!

Firstly, Salvia plants are a great addition to any landscape design due to their ability to tolerate Oklahoma's hot and dry climate. They are drought-tolerant and can handle the intense heat and sun, making them an excellent choice for water-wise landscaping. Salvia plants are known for their ability to withstand periods of extended drought, which is essential in Oklahoma's often arid conditions. Salvia plants are also an excellent option for those seeking a low-maintenance garden. They are easy to care for and do not require excessive amounts of water or fertilizer to thrive. This makes them a great choice for those looking to create a garden that requires minimal effort. Another reason why Salvia plants are great to use in landscapes is their versatility. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including compact, dwarf varieties and tall, bushy plants. This means they can be used in many different areas of a landscape design, from filling in small gaps to creating focal points in larger areas. Salvia plants are also a beautiful addition to any garden due to their vibrant blooms. They come in a range of colors, including blue, purple, pink, red, and white, and produce showy spikes of flowers that can add a pop of color to any landscape design. In summary, Salvia plants are a great option for any landscape design in Oklahoma due to their ability to thrive in hot, dry conditions, low-maintenance nature, versatility, and vibrant blooms. As landscapers, we highly recommend including Salvia plants in any garden design. #Salvia #SalviaPlant #Landscaping #OklahomaLandscaping #LandscapeDesign #LowMaintenanceLandscape #LandscapeTip #Flowers #Pollinators #OwassoOK #TulsaOK #ClaremoreOK #OologahOK #CollinsvilleOK #BrokenArrowOK

Oklahoma's landscaping zone makes it a great contender to include junipers to create year-round interest in residential and commercial landscapes. We continue to enjoy including them in many of our landscape designs, especially for clients seeking low maintenance plants. The year-round color is beautiful as evergreens retain their foliage throughout the year, providing color and texture to your landscape even during the winter months when many other plants go dormant. The yellow-gold foliage of an evergreen such as Old Gold Juniper (pictured) can add a bright pop of color to your landscaping bed, while the silvery-blue foliage of Grey Owl juniper (pictured) can create a more muted, calming effect. In our opinion, evergreens are a great choice for landscaping design due to their year-round interest, low maintenance, and versatility. #Landscaping #LandscapingDesign #LandscapeTip #Evergreens #Outdoor #LandscapeDesign #Landscape #Oklahoma #OwassoOK #TulsaOK #ClaremoreOK #BrokenArrowOK #CollinsvilleOK #OologahOK

When planning an outdoor entertainment space in Oklahoma, it's important to consider the state's hot summers and occasional severe weather patterns. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind: Shade: Providing adequate shade is crucial in Oklahoma's scorching summers. Consider incorporating features such as pergolas, umbrellas, or covered patios to keep guests cool and comfortable. Seating: Comfortable seating is a must for any outdoor entertainment space. Consider incorporating a mix of seating options, including lounge chairs, benches, and dining sets. Lighting: Adequate lighting is important for safety and ambiance. Consider installing string lights, landscape lighting, or even a fire pit to provide a cozy atmosphere after dark. Weather-resistant materials: Given Oklahoma's sometimes unpredictable weather, it's important to choose materials that can withstand wind, rain, and extreme temperatures. Consider options such as metal, concrete, or composite decking. Landscaping: Incorporating landscaping elements such as plants, trees, and hardscaping features can help enhance the overall aesthetic of the space and create a more welcoming atmosphere. By considering these factors, you can create an outdoor entertainment space in Oklahoma that is both functional and beautiful. #remodel #homeimprovement #OklahomaRemodel #homedesign #Reno #homeremodel #OologahOK #BixbyOK #CollinsvilleOK #tulsaok #ClaremoreOK #OwassoOK #LandscapeTip #LandscapeMaintenence #SmallBusiness #OklahomaLiving #TulsaLiving #OutdoorLiving #Outdoor #PatioDesign

Grasses are trimmed and the mulch has been changed from a dyed red mulch to fresh cedar. When choosing a mulch we prefer Grade A Cedar. Cedar has a smell which is pleasing to many of us, while acting as a deterrent to many unwanted pests. Additionally, it looks great. Next year, this mulch will need a light "fluffing" with a gloved hand and have a refreshed look. #Landscape #LandscapeTip #SpringLandscape #LandscapeMaintenence #Landscaping #LandscapeCare #Mulch #CedarMulch #Oklahoma #OwassoOK #ClaremoreOK #TulsaOK #BrokenArrowOK

Winter is the best time to prune fruit trees in Georgia, especially apple and pear. However, it’s important to avoid pruning fruit spurs, which are the short stems that will produce fruit this summer. Has someone been doing a rain dance? We’ve seen more than our share of the wet stuff this year, which can lead to oversaturated soil and root rot in your landscape. Signs include yellowing foliage, poor growth, wilting, and soft, brown patches on lower stems. Can weeds damage concrete? Even small weeds and seedlings have the power to displace concrete using potential energy from root growth. Winter sunlight in combination with depleted soil moisture and harsh winds can wreak havoc on your landscape plants. Burlap and frost covers can be a real lifesaver when it comes down to protecting your plants from the harsh conditions of winter! Using Burlap as a protective cover allows air to circulate while keeping foliage safe from the elements. Woodie recommends using wooden stakes to give space between the covering and the plants foliage! The stakes are a precautionary measure to protect the foliage, for if burlap or cover becomes wet and freezes it will likely damage your plant! - - - #gardenhack #landscapetip #yardplanting #wintergarden #spring2022 #burlapandblants #burlap #gardentools #yardplanting #yarddesign #gardentips #plantsforsale #plantsshipped

I know it is a lot more work, but there is still nothing like a real Christmas tree. The look, the smell, and the nostalgia make it all worthwhile. These three simple tips will help keep your tree fresh beyond Christmas morning. After bringing your tree home, recut the trunk and set it in a shallow pan of hot water in your garage out of the wind and sunlight. Next, before bringing your tree into your home, recut the base and water your tree in the stand again with clean hot water. Do not add anything to the water like aspirin, 7UP, bleach sugar, etc. All of these just grow bacteria or can cause reverse osmosis. Lastly, close curtains during the day to prevent the sun from hitting your tree, close nearby heat vents, and turn down the heat, especially at night. Merry Christmas! #landscapetip #landscapetips #landscapingtips #landscapingtipsandtricks #horticulturist #horticulturelife #FreshChristmasTree #christmastime #christmastree
