A fleeting moment of sunshine yesterday! Not sure if I love the orchard more in Spring or Summer - swipe for both and a before! Love the blossom on the fruit trees this time of year but the wildflower areas between the trees are getting more beautiful every Summer. We've tried to make this part of the garden as wildlife friendly as we can with native wildflowers, mowed paths, a wider variety of fruit trees, an added evergreen oak and a hornbeam hedge. Yesterday, we started building a dead hedge which will give us a home for the many trimmings from the garden which can't be composted - less bonfires and tip runs! Dead hedges also create an amazing habitat for all sorts of mini beasts and birds. I've wanted to do one for ages but seeing them on @ruralandrustic1 a few months ago convinced me. BUT there is an issue - most of the trees are flowering whereas in a 'normal' year there is a sequence with a couple of the cultivars flowering early and some flowering late. Our fruit trees 🍎🍒🍐 from @montanafruittreeco are planted. We planted fruit trees on our land 14 years ago and hauled hundreds of gallons of water to them every week when we lived in town - those trees were tough, but not as tough as the winter of 2022. We had a prolonged cold spell and lost all our trees, with the exception of a plum. We mixed about 30 percent @Glaciergoldcompost and peat with the soil from each hole and 1 TBSP of @trifectanatural Mycorrhizal Fungi applied to the roots. We still need to do some initial pruning, mulching, and clearing more of the surrounding brush, but the big thing was to get everything planted within 24 hours. Apple varieties: Arkansas Black, Haralson, RubyMac, Honeycrisp, Triumph Tart cherry varieties: Danube, Montmorency, Pear varieties: Flemish Beauty, Clapp’s Favorite And…Honeyberries! (Aurora and Tundra). After the super cold weeks earlier this month, I was asked about damage. When we dip below our temperature thresholds for the buds, I often go do some checks. Each bud has around 3-5 future blossoms. If there was frost damage, the little stamen spot is dark. You can see this bud has two healthy and one damaged. Some damage is good- its nature thinning the fruit for us. Perenstroop en appelstroop. Waar ik me voornamelijk richt op het maken van peren-appelstroop. Had ik toch de wens om te kijken hoe appelstroop van Elstar (kom toch uit Elst hè😉) en perenstroop van alleen conference zou proeven. Dat ging erg goed en de smaak is erg lekker als je van wat zuurder houdt (appel) en wat zoeter (peer) dus met vol vertrouwen heb ik de eerst potjes verkocht aan Floor. Floor en ik gaan al wat jaartjes terug en leuk dat de potjes van Stroopstokerij, Meneer appel nu bij hem verkrijgbaar zijn.

Cowslip wine What a joy it is to see the mass of yellow cowslip flowers thriving under the fruit trees in The Old Vicarage garden. They are extra special to me because as a child I loved reading the “Little Grey Rabbit” books where she makes cowslip wine. Once upon a time the brew was popular amongst country folk possibly because the plant produces a narcotic juice.
