It slowly proliferates, given moist humus and shade, to form a colony of lush, lacy, fresh green mounds. This, as was kindly pointed out to us, is easily confused with the Chinese Adiantum mariesii (can't imagine why). This one, Adiantum x mairisii, was discovered ca. 1885 at Mairis & Co. Nursery in England, hence the spelling. It is deciduous but persists into winter. ピンクのバラたち。1枚目ヘルシューレン、2枚目プチトリアノン、3枚目ロココのつぼみ。ヘルシューレン、崖ぎわに張り出してしまってほとんど手が届かないとこがあって、古枝切ったくらいであんまり深くは剪定してなかったけど思ったよりは咲いた！まだ開いてないつぼみもあるからたのしみ。プチトリアノンは大風でボッキリ折れてもうだめかと思ったらまた切り株からシュートが出てきて成長中。きっと今年は咲かせない方がいいんだろうけど気づいたら2つ大きい蕾が出ていて、この大きさの蕾は気持ち的に切れない…てなり今に至る。ロココは冬の間に細身のオベリスク立てて誘引し直し。太いメインの枝が高・低で2本出てるのだけど、巻きつけたくて高い方を高いままキープして浅く剪定したら春になってさらに上に伸びてしまってなんか変な感じに…。蕾自体はたくさんついたので、上すぎるのは咲いたらさっさと切って部屋で活けるとかもありかな〜 あと写真撮りにくい位置だったから撮ってないけどジャスミーナも咲いてた。なんか今年は咲く順序が少しおかしい気がする… #バラ #ヘルシューレン #プチトリアノン #ロココ #ピンクのバラ #庭 #庭づくり #雑草対策 #成長記録 #ガーデニング #ガーデニング五年目 #rose #verschuren #pinkrose #petittrianon #rococo #blooms #buds #spring #springgarden #flowers #flowerstagram #gardenjournal #gardening #gardeninglife #gardenplants #garden #5thyeargardener #nofilter

How vivid does this Phylica pubescens look against the bright orange flowers of the lovely Leonotis leonurus 😍. TBH, even though culturally these plants SHOULD have worked well together, in reality, some of the Phylica ( in the foreground of this photo) was really happy, and the rest (cropped out 😅) died off. Why? I'd selected the plants because they were suited to full sun /dry soil conditions, BUT, an irrigation system went in, and some of the plants were getting too much water 💧😬. I'm a big believer that plants should get 'looked after' while they establish, but in the long term, they should be able to stand on their own two feet (so to speak) without the need for extra moisture unless extreme periods of dry are experienced 🫠. Planting for the conditions is so important. Side note...very tricky writing those botanical plant names with auto correct 😆. Common names are easier... 'flannel flower' (Phylica pubescens) and 'lions tail' (Leonotis leonurus). Some combination of delicate and rigidly defensed, 'Mahonia oiwakensis subsp. lomarifolia' is well worth a spot in the garden and one that I hope will ultimately reach 12ft or more tall. I was a bit worried about how hardy this species might be, however it definitely proved itself this winter. Showing little damage from temperatures that reached down to 10°F (-12°C). Perhaps even lower. And yes. I am one of those people that continues to deny the moniker of Berberis to the Mahonia clan. Even though these are able to cross-breed at times, I still have difficulty including the shrubs with distinctly different cane-like structure and pinnately compound leaves into the other group. In my last post, I asked if you were choppers or keepers when it came to the daisy-like flowers of this VERY popular garden plant we often just call 'tractor seat plant' (I bet you can tell why 😆). Whether you keep the flowers on for your pollinators, or chop them off and just grow it for the impressive foliage, you're in good company.... This is one of THE most popular foliage plants in use in the landscaping industry at the moment, popping up in almost every garden I visit and a regular star in those inspirational garden design photo posts we all love. The good news is, Ligularia reniformis 'Giganteum' is super easy to grow! Though some protection from slugs and snails 🐌 is advised. But, if like me you are a little lax in that department, no worries, damaged foliage can be snapped off at the base, & fresh new leaves will soon appear 🌿. Tractor seat plant is a great choice for those tricky, shady garden areas such as under trees and, as it's a bog plant, it'll thrive in the damper parts of your garden too. In the shade, the dramatic, evergreen leaves are light-reflecting, brightening up gloomy spaces and looking gorgeous. It's best not to this plant in full sun, unless you're going to give it LOTS of water💧, otherwise the large sculptural leaves hang their heads & droop like crazy 😕 on hot days🙈. The foliage provides a fantastic contrast against any number of companion plants. I grow mine beneath large trees paired with acorus, creeping jenny & ajuga ❤️, and I've recently added in some 'Silver Lady' ferns & a yellow spotted ligularia. What will you pair yours with 🤔?
