On april 8th it marked 1 year of knowing this man and starting the process to radically change my life. One year ago we were moving all my aninals and things. I was experiencing shepherding on a deeper level and opened up to theese beautiful mountain landscapes that I now call home. Feeling blessed to be able to live amongst so much preserved oak forests and it is just the time of the year, that even the plain gestas turn into a work of art with their yellow flowers. This beautiful oak tree has caused me a lot of angst! The initial plein air watercolour was beautiful and I was really pleased with it, but when I took it back into the studio it just didnt translate. I normally paint my large scale paintings instinctively in one session, this painting however took much longer to unfold over a period of weeks. I took photos as I went sometimes then thinking about the painting for a couple of weeks and working on something else before I came back to it. So let me know what you think….should I have stopped at an earlier iteration….or was I right to keep going?? The beauty of recording is that you can learn from the decisions you made to inform the next paintings. All part of the practice! Anyway I now love it! I think it captures the spirit of the original tree, the prominent roots seeming to sprout directly from the earth, the moss growing up from the roots…..the strong branches twisting and gnarling, showing its age and wisdom. Another beautiful oak tree watching over us helping to heal us and our planet if we let it. This tree will be on display and for sale as part of my open studios for @seopenstudios with @faye_bridgwater. This is the Angel Oak tree (a Live Oak)in Charleston. What an incredible tree! It is believed to be 400-500 years old! It is 65 feet tall, has a circumference of 25.5 ft and shades an area of 17,000 sq ft! The park hadn’t opened yet so unfortunately we had to photograph it behind a chain link fence. Sunrise through oak trees at Otmoor….despite the cold and dull weather, some of the oak trees locally are almost fully in leaf whereas others are still skeletal silhouettes clearly ready to burst into life when the warmth of Spring finally returns. I can only think this must be down to microclimatic variations - sunny south-facing slopes would seem to favour earlier unfurling of leaves compared to north-facing ones or low-lying frost hollows with their depressed temperatures. Or is there a genetic or behavioural element to this I wonder? Early foliation would seem advantageous in terms of making the most of the extra daylight but could be counterproductive if the tree is then hit by a late frost. Is the late leafing of some oaks a biogeographical response to this in certain locations? I pause to reflect on the beauty of nature I got to witness this April, including the total eclipse of the sun and the magnificent trees of Charleston, South Carolina. If I had a spirit animal, it would definitely be a tree. As I was prepping for a documentary film shoot in S. Carolina, I decided to take the time and see the eclipse here in Ontario. Experiencing a totality for 3 full minutes was an experience of a lifetime and unlike anything else I witnessed before. I’m so glad that @miksang and @faisallutchmedial are my eclipse buddies for life. While in Charleston, I also made sure that amidst a busy schedule, I will have the time to visit its famous oak trees and hug the ones that called for it. I always make sure that nature seeing is a part of my travel plans. This is also my self-care, as film’s prep work and shoot could be very demanding.
