. #monocuisson #fourceramique #durabilite #engobe #emaillage #dodamique #madeinparis #learningceramics

I used to be really afraid of making mistakes while carving my pieces. One of my earliest pieces had fluting that started out short and slanted, but as the piece rotated the fluting became much more slanted and long. I fired the piece and glazed it anyway, but there was a feeling of pity and disappointment when I picked it up. It took me a while to get used to it and accept it for what it was. Some ceramic artists have a high turnover of pieces, destroying anything that doesn’t meet a standard they set for themselves. They may not want a piece that is not up to standard released into the world bearing their signature. They might rather recycle the clay and make something better. These are professional artists, of course, and doesn’t make sense for me while I am still learning all the possibilities in ceramics, but over time I have also realised that certain imperfections also show that the piece was made by a human being and not a machine. Each artist has different tolerances to what they allow in their work, and unless they are adhering to a curriculum or style, they usually set these for themselves. I have through my learning and experimentation dealt with many issues, but I’ve learnt also what is necessary and what is not. Making a mug that is safe to drink from and long-lasting, necessary, but making a mug that has absolutely perfectly-spaced carving, not. You may argue that this results in an ugly mug, but it doesn’t. Glaze does wonders of dressing up an otherwise plain-looking bisqued piece, and depending on glaze choice (and other technical aspects like fit) can really determine the look and function of the final mug. Just my humble opinion, of course. ;) Pictured left to right bisque-fired carved vases in white, black and grey clay. #ceramic #ceramics #pottery #handmadeceramics #handmadepottery #ceramicart #potterylove #potteryart #ceramicstudent #potterystudio #ceramicsstudio #learningceramics #learningpottery #ceramicsprocess #potteryprocess #potteryproblems #claypieceoftheweek #bisqueware #carvedpottery #carvedceramics

If my mind is not in the right place, I know I will struggle on the wheel. Wheel-throwing for me is psychological as well as physical, and since I do not yet have the muscle memory for throwing, my pieces vary a lot. Mind and body as well as clay have to be centered. Sometimes I end up not being able to pull up the clay enough and the piece is short with a thick bottom or thick walls. Sometimes they are nicely thin and tall but the base is too thin. Sometimes I breathe too hard and suddenly apply too much pressure mid-pull, making walls uneven or wobbly. Sometimes the wheel spins too fast and my piece collapses. Some days I don’t have the feel for depth and am afraid to trim away too much or too little while turning. Working with clay has taught me there is much more to the medium than patience and skill. While I think taking classes would help me progress much faster, they are pricey, and as with any skill it takes practice on my own. I try to apply what I’ve learnt in the short courses, which were basic. Sometimes I am stuck with a problem and do research, and try again. Sometimes multiple cycles of this, which can be very discouraging. With that said however, I have also grown a lot learning ceramics on my own, from learning to see the beauty in imperfect pieces, to daring to experiment with new methods to achieve an idea. I’m still learning and growing every day with this medium, there is always something new to learn. #learningceramics #learningpottery #potteryprocess #potteryproblems #pottery #ceramic #ceramics #ceramicsprocess #ceramicstudio #potterylove #potterylife #handmadepottery #handmadeceramics #bisqueware #claypieceoftheweek #potterystudio #wheelthrown #wheelthrownpottery #clayartist #ceramicartist

Explosion debate 💥 The bisque firing is also when clay explosions tend to occur. There is still much debate about this, I will do my best to explain both sides here. On one side, the argument is that air expansion occurs during heating within a hollow space, causing pressure that results in the explosion. Many ceramic artists place a small hole in their hollow piece to allow the pressure to escape, so that the piece is not harmed. The hole also assists in the drying of the piece by increasing airflow over the interior surface area. Others argue that humidity is the cause of the explosion, since water expands and turns to gas when heated. Unfired clay contains water molecules, which are expelled as steam at the boiling point of water (212F/100C). As it turns into gas, its volume per unit mass increases (according to the internet, steam occupies 1600 times more volume than the same mass of water). If the heating occurs too quickly and not enough time is given to allow water to escape, this could cause clay to explode. In my own experience, I have successfully fired pieces with air bubbles without explosion. Especially with methods like coiling or addition sculpting, it’s difficult to avoid air bubbles. I’ve had professional potters and sculptors tell me that air bubbles lead to explosions. I work with a lot of dense solid clay pieces as well, with or without air bubbles depending on the method, but all my pieces are dried very long (>3 weeks to several months, depending on size, thickness) and very thoroughly before the bisque fire. Bisqueware can still absorb water, so pieces that are washed in preparation for glazing are also given extra time to dry. I tend to be more conservative with this as my climate humidity varies with the weather. Pictured here is a bisqued wheel-thrown slant-fluted vase in leather clay. What has your experience been with clay explosions? #technicalceramics #ceramics #ceramicstudio #pottery #potterystudio #potteryschool #ceramicsschool #bisqueware #clay #clayartist #ceramicartist #potteryfans #learningpottery #learningceramics #potterylife #vase #ceramicvase #handmadeceramics #handmadeceramic #handmadepottery #claypieceoftheweek

Another Raku lesson learned. This is an unusual, but interesting lot! What happened was… These were in my last Raku firing of the day. A friend was visiting and while we were chatting the gas bottle was running low, so I switched the burner off, to continue our chat. The kiln had reached approx 600°C at that point. After she left I changed the bottle and fired the kiln back up. At that point it had cooled down quite a bit and while heating it up to the usual 950°C the glaze started to crawl. Big bonus, kiln shelf is still nice and clean 👌 And as much as I like the results, these will unlikely be repeated. Well… until I do something else that I’m not ‘supposed’ to do. Main lesson here? Chatting to your friends is important as it can lead to interesting results 🔥 Thanks Cheryl 😄 @hiltonhillfarm #rakufired #rakufiring #rakupottery #raku #learningceramics #rakufun #potteryfun #ceramicfail #potterslife #artistslife #clayfun #everydayisaschoolday #scottishpotters #scottishpottery

May 3rd~ What day is it, what time is it? I’ve been working on teapots all week and all day. It’s been a long week~ THIS teapot I’ve been dreaming up since Gulgong. Made with beautiful pure porcelain as a treat to myself ( working with it feels like a mixture between beeswax and butter ), and stained pink details. I want to call this collection Nostalgia. It’s a bit hard to see in this light, but I’m going for a monochromatic teapot, many shades of pink. Think I might call it a day now and get some rest. ✨ *made with Keane Lumina #madewithkeane ~ ~ ~ #pinkclay #potterylove #australianceramics #australianpottery #thismakerslife #potterystudio #potteryforlife #tableware #handmademugs #candycoloured #handmadepottery #wheelthrownceramics #potterykiln #potterymaker #potterymaking #potterywheelthrowing #potteryfun #womeninceramics #learningceramics #functionalceramics #stonewarepottery #handmadetableware #ceramiclife #ceramiclicious #noticingceramics #cone10 #newceramics #aliceinwonderlandtheme

First glaze boo-boo! (On second pot I've glazed from the extension intro pottery wheel class I've been doing.) My son requested a 'yellow and blue' snack bowl, so I attempted another two-colour dip (with 'glossy yellow' and 'turquoise' this time.) I've obviously applied it too thickly on inner rim - you can see the spots where it's crawled. My overlapping of the blue over the yellow on the outside hasn't really worked in it's favour (both are non-reactive anyway, I think.) Also, although I stirred it really well I think the yellow glaze may have needed sieving! There wasn't much left in the bucket. So it may have had all the dregs in it! I'm just using club glazes atm. On the up, at least it didn't crack and my son got his yellow and blue snack bowl... Think I'll go back to single colour dipping for a while now until I get more of a feel for the glazes and how thin / thick to apply them... #glazebooboo #firstpots #newpotteryjourney #learningpottery #learningceramics #learningpotterywheel #whanganuipottersstudio #whanganui #keeleyeastwoodartistprintmaker #keeleyeastwoodart #mypotteryjourney #glazetoothick

Not quite a moon jar, it is, as a classmate said of their own jar, rather more of a grenade. I'm absolutely in love with it to be honest... I've been trying to think more about glazes and how they interact with the clay and each other - a layer of cream underneath gives some of the transparent studio glazes a bit more flow and dimension. It's a tricky balance, as too much flow is just streaks, right, but this moss green is holding its own nicely. At least I think its moss green, I've made the rookie mistake of thinking I'll remember what glaze I used with quite a few things recently 😬. I did the same with some test tiles, for absolute Christ's sake. The streaks are red iron oxide applied over the glazes, I applied what i thought was a LOT but its not really, so I guess I can be braver with that in future. . . . . #ceramics #learningceramics #glazes #moonjar #pottery #glazetesting

One of my latest accomplishments is getting my hands on almost the whole series of "Nihon no Yakimono" or Pottery of Japan. This series documents the different ceramic styles of the various regions in Japan. From firing techniques to differet clay types and processing methods. It tells the history as well and the technical aspects of pottery making. At the moment I'm mainly enjoying the pictures and sketches but there will come a day when I know enough Japanese to read some of this or pay someone a lot of money to translate. Unfortunately I'm still missing two books. My first crow..all glazed and fired 🖤 The biggest piece I've done..so far 😊 The experimental stone/lichen effect turned out pretty good 💚 #crowart #learningceramics #cemeterycrow #darkceramics #hellodarkness #corvidart #crow #glaze

March 18th~ Black teapots all finished up. I’ll be doing a little shop update in the near future. I’ve got jewellery boxes, spoons, and of course teapots. I’m taking a break from making teapots to expand my range a bit. Kinda excited to apply everything I’ve learnt and discovered from teapots making on to other pots. ~ ~ ~ ~ #porcelainpottery #potterylove #australianceramics #australianpottery #thismakerslife #potterystudio #potteryforlife #tableware #handmademugs #candycoloured #handmadepottery #wheelthrownceramics #potterykiln #potterymaker #potterymaking #potterywheelthrowing #potteryfun #womeninceramics #learningceramics #functionalceramics #stonewarepottery #handmadetableware #ceramiclife #ceramiclicious #noticingceramics #cone10 #newceramics #blackglaze

March 14th~ A fun new teapot thrown in one piece. I was a bit impressed with this one. I’ve made these little colour swatches so I can see my slip choice against a glaze. It’s fun to offer it up to the teapot and see how it looks. ~ ~ ~ ~ #pottersofinstagram #potterylove #australianceramics #australianpottery #thismakerslife #potterystudio #potteryforlife #tableware #handmademugs #candycoloured #handmadepottery #wheelthrownceramics #potterykiln #potterymaker #potterymaking #potterywheelthrowing #potteryfun #womeninceramics #learningceramics #functionalceramics #stonewarepottery #handmadetableware #ceramiclife #ceramiclicious #noticingceramics #cone10 #newceramics #aliceinwonderlandtheme

Fresh out of my last bisque firing, this was supposed to be a teapot exercise. But I made a few changes and according to your votes, this will be used for herbal tea when I glaze it. Can’t wait! - Tout frais sorti du four de dégourdi, c’est censé être un exercice de théière. Mais j’ai un peu adapté à ma sauce, et d’après vos votes ici ce sera une tisanière. J’ai hâte de l’émailler ! #wheelthrown #ceramiquetournee #gres #stoneware #degourdi #bisque #herbaltea #tisaniere #tisane #jug #coffeepot #teapot #théière #cafetiere #handmadeceramics #ceramique #faitmain #learningceramics #apprendrelaceramique #apprendreatourner #outofthekiln

March marks one year of making, learning, and working for @amyscotiapottery! I’ve been spending multiple days a week in her studio after getting lessons on throwing, trimming, handle making, and glazing, and practicing over and over and over again. I’ve only just got to the point where I feel somewhat confident in making mugs, and the occasional bowls. I say confident loosely because I still have a lot of pieces that get squashed on the wheel, crack during the bisque fire, or ruined with the wrong glaze. But through every piece that doesn’t turn out, I always tell myself either “it’s all part of the fun!” Or “… it’s a learning experience” 😂 because it is! And with ceramics, the thing I’ve learned most is to have low expectations, and stay humble. I’m grateful that Amy has given me the opportunity to work in her studio so frequently, because every piece that’s actually turned out has brought me a great sense of joy (especially when it finds a new home with someone who is just as excited about it as me 🫶). I can’t wait to see where another year of messing around and finding out will get me 😂 #martimepotters #potteryintern #learningceramics #novascotiapotters #ceramics #wheelthrowing #handmadeceramics #handmadepottery #handmademug #wheelthrownmugs #pottery #learningpottery #beginnerpotter #artist #ceramicartist #potteryartist #potterylife #clay #clayart

March 7th~ Spent a bit of time on my little lathe today made 4 handles. I’ve got a few black teapots cooling in the kiln so my timing is good. In an ideal world I would spend a couple of days making loads of handles, but I must say I do enjoy making handles for specific teapots. Hopefully by Friday evening I’ll have a few to show you. Just in time for my teapot workshop this weekend at @stonestudioandco :) ~ ~ ~ ~ #woodlathe #potterylove #australianceramics #australianpottery #thismakerslife #potterystudio #potteryforlife #tableware #handmademugs #candycoloured #handmadepottery #wheelthrownceramics #potterykiln #potterymaker #potterymaking #potterywheelthrowing #potteryfun #womeninceramics #learningceramics #functionalceramics #stonewarepottery #handmadetableware #ceramiclife #ceramiclicious #noticingceramics #cone10 #newceramics #aliceinwonderlandtheme

Teapot exercise: check! No cracks appeared after drying. I’ll probably make another lid though. I don’t like this one so much. - Exercice de la théière : fait ! Pas de fissures au séchage. Je ferai sans doute un autre couvercle, je suis pas très sûre d’aimer celui là. #learningceramics #apprendrelaceramique #chocolatestoneware #greschocolat #grès #stoneware #apprendrelapoterie #learningpottery #wheelthrown #wheelthrownpottery #poterieautour #teapot #greenware #théière #theiereceramique #ceramicsteapot #exercise #handmade #faitmain #argilecrue #ceramics #céramique #encours

✨️ Monday pottery night at @make_bristol 🩵 Thank you Ciara ( @thetinytoucan ) for spending time with me and teaching me so much! Your support and tips made me make a lot of progress with my throwing and can now start properly practicing 🤩 I tried throwing on the 6 week introduction to ceramic course many months ago and got sucked into the handbuilding world. I really enjoyed throwing and would love to get better... glad to get back on the wheel! 👋 As always I would very much recommend @make_bristol if you fancy giving it a go too! #pottery #learningtothrow #bristolpottery #bristolmaker #bristolpotteryclass #bristolpotteryclasses #learningceramics #trysomethingnew
