My upcoming Exploring Clay workshops are now up on my website 🧡 The perfect gift for Mother’s Day 🧡 These workshops are an opportunity for me to share all of the learnings that have come to me over the past few years developing my practice. This involves delving into my relationship with clay, including my recent explorations with collecting ‘wild’ clay, but it is also more broadly a space that encourages heartfelt conversation around creativity, connection, presence, and play. My intention is to create a safe space for people to come together to reflect and share, learn new skills, and of course, connect with the beautiful material that is clay. During this three hour workshop, I will guide you through a range of hand-building techniques to help you create your own unique pieces, made from a range of stoneware clays, including some local Warrandyte ‘wild’ clay. This workshop is perfect for beginners, and more experienced makers; all levels are welcomed. All techniques learned in the workshop will allow you to continue your practice in the comfort of your own home, with very few tools. During the workshop, you will make between 5-8 hand-built pieces, which will be glazed, fired and ready for collection within 2-3 weeks of the workshop. All materials will be supplied. Grazing board and drinks will be served. $10 from every ticket will be donated to the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.

Tough day in the studio today. One kiln didn’t reach temperature in a glaze firing and on closer inspection has a broken element. Need to order up a new element and keeping my fingers crossed it doesn’t take too long to be made and arrive with me. Second kiln….. opened the door to an explosion in a biscuit firing. I think thickness of clay was the reason the culprit blew up…. I candled the kiln twice before firing to get rid of excess moisture, so pieces were as dry as they could be. Keeping my fingers crossed he didn’t take anyone elses work out with him. The kiln is too hot to inspect too closely so that will have to be a job for tonight to sort out and clean up. Boo It’s not often we have explosions in kiln or errors in firings / issues with kilns…. It's been a year since my debut article in the Journal of Australian Ceramics came out. I felt very honoured but scared at the same time to write about something I've been reflecting on that initiated from my Urasenke tea ceremony practise. At the same time I had conflicting internal dialogue that I would like everyone to read it but I also want to avoid confrontation. The reason why I have the courage to bring it up again is because in my recent trip to Melbourne, I met a group of potters who mentioned that they really appreciated that someone in the ceramic industry brought this topic up. So here you go, after a year, I've finally put it up on my website for people who didn't subscribe to the journal to be able to read it. I didn't write it with the intention to blame people or say you cannot do this or that. It was written as a reflection practise, to make ourselves more considerate and thoughtful about our own art making. I definitely hope it brings a positive dialogue between people. India 🇮🇳 day 67 - Week 10 Another day staring work on our new form Jugs, really enjoying them (well haven’t trimmed or put handles on yet). Also worked on our 3rd batch of clay and reclaimed what little we had left. Sadly most of my day was tied up trying to start making plans and and responding to VISA extension applications that appear to be in the negative. I won’t go deep into details but looks like I may have to cut my time here in India short by a month. With my current VISA I can only remain here in 90 day blocks for a total of 180 days. So by the 31st of May I will leave to reset my VISA and come back in time to glaze for the 1st firing. Then at some stage before August I will leave again to ensure I can attend to the 2nd firing. It will mean jamming in as much making as I can. But I’m always looking for the positives, for starters I get to see my beautiful @search_yourself on my first trip out. For IMA shop event Vessels, Visaya presents a glazed stoneware teapot with lid that doubles as a cup. Who are you ? Visaya Hoffie What did you make ? A specialised liquid container that looks like a traditional teapot. Why did you make it ? The teapot has a long history within art, all with interrelated traditions across the globe. Also, there’s a ceremonial aspect to tea drinking that changes from culture to culture, but that tends to bring a sense of formality to the sharing of tea drinking. I wanted to make a teapot that references this but that also references characters from my youth. Doraemon and Shin-Chan from Japan and Pink Panther and Bugs Bunny from the US. I’ve done this through decorating the vessel in nostalgic iconography that was central to my own upbringing.
