Thiksay Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Ladakh region of India, located approximately 19 kilometers east of the town of Leh. Often likened to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, due to its striking structure and hilltop location, Thiksay is one of the most prominent and largest gompas (monasteries) in Ladakh. Established in the mid-15th century and part of the Gelugpa sect, Thiksay Monastery is a 12-story complex with an impressive array of stupas, statues, thangkas, wall paintings, and swords. The monastery is home to about 60 monks and features a number of temples dedicated to various manifestations of the Buddha and other deities. One of the highlights of the monastery is a two-story statue of the Maitreya Buddha (the future Buddha), which is housed in the main prayer hall. Thiksay is known for its annual Gustor Festival, which occurs on the ninth to the tenth day of the ninth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. The festival includes a variety of rituals but is best known for its masked dances performed by the monks, which symbolize the destruction of evil forces.
