Mālama Loko Ea Foundation (MLEF) and Trust for Public Land (TPL) are currently applying for public conservation acquisition funding from the State Legacy Land Conservation Program and the City’s Clean Water and Natural Lands Program and we are in need of public support, YOU! We are in hopes to purchase and protect Loko Ea Queen’s Residence in Haleʻiwa, Kawailoa, Waialua, Oʻahu—which sits on the bank of Loko Ea Fishpond. Loko Ea is part of the historic ʻUkoʻa-Loko Ea Wetland Fishpond Complex and is the third largest wetland on Oʻahu. Protecting this parcel will buffer and protect Loko Ea, preserving aquaculture for local food security, restore habitats for native and endangered life, enhance water quality, support Waialua’s wild fishery, and provide MLEF legal access to Loko Ea to continue its fishpond restoration and ‘āina based educational programs. Your collective testimonies are critical in acquiring this parcel in hopes to keep it functioning as a community kīpuka. We are requesting your support in the form of a Google Form (2 minutes) and an email letter of support (20 minutes) to acquire the LT parcel. Links can be found in our bio or on our website lokoea.org. The State Legacy funding that we applied for assistance in the purchase of this parcel is making its decision at the end of the month and we need our partners—past, present and future to kakoʻo this initiative to keep Hawaiian lands in Hawaiian hands. We are requesting all signatures and letters by February 26, 2024. Mahalo to those who have already signed and submitted their support. We truly appreciate it. If you would like to submit verbal testimony on behalf of acquiring this parcel, please email [email protected]. . . . #lokoeafishpond #kawailoa #waialua #haleiwa #kipuka #queenliliuokalani #keephawaiianlandsinhawaiianhands

Huuuiiii! It's been a little while since we have said aloha to everyone. Come and take a photo walk with us to get to know Loko ea a bit more! We begin on our kuapā as we say aloha to Kaʻala being kissed by the morning clouds. Looking across to the other side, we visit with our pua’ama while getting in a beautiful view of our hale. Once we come towards our loko i’a kalo, we can see our nursery pond with multiple views of our mokulana/puʻuhonua of ʻaeʻae and a little portion of ʻUkoʻa. Ending it off with a favorite vantage point of all 3 ponds. Can you name any of them? As a 400+ year old pond, there have been so many moʻolelo and memories shared throughout the years. Feel free to comment with any stories that you have of this wahi hoʻōla. We'd love to hear how this special place has been part of your life. . . . #lokoeafishpond #kawailoa #ʻukoʻa #wahihoʻōla #wahipana

Once again, we have passed into another new year. As we look toward the future and strive to meet new goals, experience new growth and move on to new chapters in our lives, it is important to look back and reflect on what led us here. Let’s not be so quick to cast aside past selves that have got us through all the challenges of 2022. Without looking to the past and understanding how we got here, we are soon to lose our way. I ka wā ma mua, ka wā ma hope. We look to our past to move into the future with intention.   We deeply appreciate all of you this past year who have put your time and energy into making Loko ea a kīpuka for so many. Last week we were fortunate enough to be chosen as the Aloha ʻĀina: Love of the Land, Grand Marshall of the Aloha Week Parade! We had no experience on how to build a float, but we were able to pull together and collectively share parts of a loko iʻa and pieces of Loko ea to the many parade goers. We hope you enjoy “Nāmakawaipuna” as much as we did. . . Loko Ea fishpond is not only home to the fish we care for and the native plants that surround her, but also to our kia’i who have been called to her in their own way. Like a fisherman who sews his net, Loko Ea has woven our lives together to become vessels of resources to carry her mana to our communities in Hawai’i and beyond. Within each eye of a fishnet or even the eyes of our mākāhā, things are allowed to pass through while others are caught to nourish the teachings of our kūpuna. We hope that through our efforts, you will feel moved to visit us one day and partake in the ‘ono of ancestral knowledge that we are proud to further in the education and restoration of this community resource. The 400 year old loko iʻa fishpond in Haleiwa, Hawaii, traditionally named Loko Ea is a rare, significant cultural site on Oʻahu’s North Shore. Ancient Loko Ea is located in the ahupuaʻa of Kawailoa, a land division from mountain to sea, in the moku land district of Waialua. The area is traditionally known for its profusion of fresh water springs and flowing streams. Famous was the moku of Waialua for its abundance and fertility, where mahiʻai farmers and kanaka lawaiʻa fishermen could sustain their families with bountiful harvests. Loko Ea and Ukoʻa are two distinct ponds near the ocean shore, connected to the sea by a stream or ditch, found in the district of Waialua. Together, they make up the third largest existing wetland on the island of Oʻahu. The pond was once the summer retreat of Queen Liliuokalani. Connected physically through the streams and freshwater springs, they are also spiritually connected, as both are the home to Hawaiian Deity Laniwahine, the female water guardian of the two fishponds. Lani-wahine is a mo‘o goddess of Ukoa pond and often appears in human form to foretell some terrible event. Loko Ea is indeed an ancestral place of importance, a significant Wahi Pana to the people of Waialua. The site is associated with ancient deities, cultural practices and historical events. This fishpond once helped to sustain its community by providing aquatic food resources like native fish and seaweed. 💦🐟🌱👸🏽 - - - #lokoea #lokoeafishpond #mālamalokoea #laniwahine #haleiwa #hawaiianhistory #hawaiihistory #historichawaii #deity #hawaiiandeity #historicalhawaii #hawaii #oahu #waikiki #honolulu #northshore #northshoreoahu #hawaiistagram #hawaiitag #hawaiianculture #hawaiiculture #honoluluhawaii #honolululife #waialua #historichonolulu #oahuhawaii #oahulife #oahuadventures #fishpond #historichawaiifoundation

ARCC is an immersive travel program that brings students to Loko Ea with the intention of learning and working in ʻāina. These groups have contributed and helped out in many different ways. They have participated in clearing and reclaiming space to plant native species. They have sunken into the depths of the pond to remove invasive limu that is affecting our pond health. Throughout their time here they are practicing aloha ʻāina through moʻolelo, hana, learning, and listening. Overall these groups work hard and through their hard work, they have helped build upon the foundation of Loko Ea. We hope that as these groups come they learn and something inspires them as an individual. We hope that their understanding of Hawaiʻi expands and that they see the intelligent masterpieces that have been created by our kūpuna. As the school year ends we would like to aloha Ke Kula ʻo Samuel M. Kamakau for sharing space with us. We were fortunate enough to host the WCC dual credit AQUA201 course here at Loko Ea and it couldnʻt have been any better. Every Wednesday for the entire spring semester, 22 haumāna and a few other inspirational kumu would traverse all the way from Kaneohe to Waialua. Throughout the class, they learned a wide array of things ranging from kilo to recruiting puaʻama to mālama ʻāina. This class has been a great experience and the first of its kind here at Loko Ea. The amount of aloha and growth was so immense throughout this papa. We are hopeful for future opportunities to team up with these amazing kānaka. Mahalo nui to the haumāna and staff from Ke Kula ʻo Samuel M. Kamakau. Shout out to @saviliswahili for providing your ʻike and aloha! #lokoeafishpond #lokoea #pilina

We hosted our sixth and final Climate Ready O’ahu Workshop at beautiful @lokoeafishpond this past Saturday! 🙌 We spent the day together building kuapā in many different ways. Like the kuapā or wall of the loko iʻa, we sought to have meaningful conversations around building resiliency in our community in the face of climate change while also physically restoring the kuapā to build a strong foundation for generations to come. Mahalo nui @resilientoahu for your partnership and efforts to engage communities and to all of our site partners for your hana nui!! #malamalearningcenter #resilientoahu #lokoeafishpond #climateadaptation #kuapa

Native Hawaiian art pieces embody deep ʻike and cultural history. The kāhili, among many other implements, were made and used in processions of royalty to acknowledge their rank within the chiefly class system. Traditionally, it took weeks to complete one kāhili as they were made with feathers plucked from native birds and then woven. Today, it is a symbol of our ancestors that we strive to emulate in our actions of love, respect, and care for ʻohana and the rest of our lāhui. We are excited to invite the public to a kāhili making workshop to perpetuate this cultural practice. Pilina; Relationship, union, connection. . . So much of our lives are woven together by the relationships we have with each other. When nurtured, it becomes a foundation that reinforces our values and shows us the meaning of aloha that brings people together to be called family. Mahalo nui to the Nākupuna Foundation ʻohana for bringing your light to our loko iʻa this past weekend and exemplifying the true meaning of laulima. As we planted in the ʻāina and cleared her of weeds, we felt her breathe in new life. Your aloha for this space is truly special and we are proud to have you all as members of our Loko ea ʻohana. #mahalomahalomahalo @nakupuna . . . #pilina #ola #laulima #lokoeafishpond
