Whether it's harvesting, painting, moving, or digging, your helping hand can make a real difference. This year's first work day is happening on Tuesday, May 21st from 10AM to 3PM at Big Dream Farm in Saugerties, NY. We'll be lending a hand with their okra transfer! In honor of Women's History Month in March, we honored three incredible women in the community at our monthly Community Workday: City Council Chair Deborah Figgs-Sanders, Theresa Jones, and Zaneta Ellison of New Vision Behavioral Health. These three women have one thing in common: continued and unwavering support in championing important causes in the community. We are incredibly grateful and honored to have women like them making St. Pete a better place. We spent the morning with an awesome group of hardworking volunteers. We welcomed youth from Community Tampa Bay's Anytown, and returning volunteers came back to see all the new exciting changes to the farm and help out. We had new visitors stop by to learn more about what we do, and we always offer freshly harvested greens and produce for people to take home. First service project of the year! Nā Haumāna o ke kai went down to Loko ea fishpond, located in Haleiwa, to help remove an invasive seagrass called ruppia. On Sunday, November 26 from 9am-1pm, please join Monan's Rill Institute for an Acorn Planting Day to support the regeneration of oak woodlands following their severe burning in the 2020 Glass Fire. 

We will start with a waffle breakfast at our community building (the HUB) from 9:00-9:30am, and then head out from 10:00am-12:30pm to plant acorns in historical oak savanna and oak woodlands where mature oaks were killed by the wildfire. Thanks to volunteers and friends, we have several hundred locally collected native oak acorns ready to plant!

We will be primarily planting in areas where acorns planted last year did not germinate, making a new hole in the soil inside existing cages, plant acorns and inoculate with a little compost and soil from below healthy mature oak trees.  At 12:30pm we will return to the HUB to share our successes and learnings, wrapping up our closing circle at 1pm. You are welcome to stay after to eat lunch together with other participants. We hope you will join us for this opportunity to connect with nature and fellow humans, while contributing to the regeneration of native oak woodlands. Please bring a filled water bottle, any snacks you'll need to sustain you until 1pm (waffle breakfast will be provided at 9am) and lunch if you want to stay after, as well as work gloves. We also recommend wearing good hiking shoes, long pants, sun and/or rain protection, and layers for variable weather. There will be a Monan’s Rill community business meeting from 2-4pm, the first portion of which guests are welcome to attend.

Lā Kaiāulu 11-2023!!! • • Aloha and mahalo nui to this wonderful group of kanaka that joined us this past Saturday for our Lā Kaiāulu-Community Workday!! We were able to mālama some of our māla kalo and outplant some 'awa and 10 new varieties of native kō! As we honor and remember all of our veterans of past, present and future who have paved a way to ensuring freedom and liberty to this Country’s citizens, we would also like to recognize the last monarch of our sovereign Kingdom. On November 11, 1917, Queen Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Kamakaʻeha would take her final breath at the age of 79. She is remembered by her people for the aloha and grace she governed with and her strength to “ʻOnipaʻa” in the face of adversity for her Kingdom. She reminds us today that we should move always with aloha and ʻonipaʻa for what is pono. Mahalo to all of our amazing hui volunteers who came and shared space with HOH on ʻāina in Kapapapuhi yesterday as we honored her. We are fortunate to have been granted the kuleana of being the vessels for the past and connecting it to our present in hopes that we are creating an abundant future. We are humbled by our ancestors who have created these beautiful systems and offer us guidance in our daily adventures around the park. Together we continue to rehabilitate the habitats of native birds and plants that belong in this space. All of our aloha to our Queen, Her kingdom, and Her people. Lā Kaiāulu | October 2023 • • It was an amazing lā kaiāulu (re)connecting with our local Kona ʻohana and our PKO ʻohana! They helped to establish our largest māla kalo yet within these kuaiwi and we were able to get about 140 huli in the ground!! We also began establishing our ʻuala collection on site using methods of restorative reuse to reconstruct our puʻepuʻe/makaili mounds to kanu our ʻuala. Growth is steady as we stay persistent and we mahalo all of our volunteers and support and look forward to seeing you all in the māla soon!!! • • Our next lā kaiāulu is coming up quick, Saturday November 11th.
