Natalie-Rose is graduating with a Bachelor of Science with Distinction in Research, Plant Sciences, and a Business Minor. Throughout their academic journey, they have delved into various research projects and completed an Honors Thesis Research project evaluating the effect of aboveground cutting frequency and drought on Sorghum halepense (Johnson grass) growth from rhizomes. The 96th Lei Day Celebration is on Wednesday! We welcome everyone to celebrate one of the most recognized symbols of aloha on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Kapi‘olani Park Bandstand. This year’s Lei Day theme of Komo mai kāu māpuna hoe (Dip your paddle in), invites everyone to enjoy this free event showcasing the skill and artistry of Hawai‘i’s lei makers. The event also features fantastic local entertainment and performances from hula halau. The following is the schedule of events at the bandstand: 9 a.m . - 9:45 a.m. Royal Hawaiian Band 10 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Kilohana Hula Show by Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement presented by Southwest Airlines 11 a.m .- 12:30 p.m. Lei Court Ceremony 1 p.m. - 1:35 p.m. Ei Nei 1:50 p.m. - 2:25 p.m. Hōkū Zuttermeister 2:50 p.m. - 3:25 p.m. Hoʻokena 3:40 p.m. - 4:10 p.m. Mana Maoli Youth Collective 4:10 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. Hālau Hula ʻO Hokulani 2024 Lei Queen Tehina Kaʻena Kahikina and her court (Princesses Angela, Makana, Madison, Sara, and Lulani) will reign over this year’s festivities. This includes the coveted Lei Contest Exhibit, showcasing some of the world’s most exquisite handcrafted lei in a variety of materials, colors, and styles. Those wishing to enter fresh flower lei for the contest must submit them between 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Lei Receiving Booth on the day of the celebration. The public will have an opportunity to experience the exhibit from 1 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., following the judging of the lei and the official opening of the exhibit by the Lei Court. “Skyline” Acrylic on wood. - The prompt for this piece is ‘Āina. ‘Āina is a Hawaiian word meaning land and the reciprocal relationship we should have with it. However, when looking at modern day Hawai’i there is none of this reciprocity. All that can be seen is the urbanization of Hawaiian land and its people. On this piece of wood I painted the Hawaiian flag in distress in the cramped cement buildings to show the crowding of locals in what is know as ‘affordable’ housing. The windows of the buildings can be interpreted a couple ways. Some popular ones are shopping carts to show capitalism and homelessness. Another interpretation was different flags showing a multicultural place. One of my classmates said that the white windows appear to be sheep. That was not my intention but it’s funny how that fits right in. Throughout the piece there are stark yellow cranes breaking up the color scheme and fluidity of the thick linear strokes of paint to symbolize the gentrification and constant redevelopment of Hawai’i. As everyone who lives here knows that constructions takes years here. This brings me to my final element of this piece. The Rail. Oh sorry I meant The Skyline. I named this piece after the ongoing bane of most locals existence. The painting is of a skyline and The Skyline. Our tax dollars have been going to what was supposed to have been a $5.2 billion dollar project finished in January 2020 but is now a $12.5 billion dollar disaster expected to finish in March 2031. I painted the Rail as it is, half finished and an eye sore. Encroaching vines and dirt on the cement show how long the beams have been there. This is the reciprocity we’ve shown the ‘Āina.
