Strange things about #tbilisi: . - you can gamble on the street automatic machines - there are a lot of cats and dogs running freely on the street, belong to no one and are mostly cared of and vaccinated by the government - the houses in the Old Town look mostly crappy from the outside, but very nice on the inside. Because of the monument protection it is a hassle to renovate the outside so people don’t care. - it seems that all of the households hang their clothes outside of the window on a line to dry. Even if it that is on the 20th floor. - there are no crosswalks in the Old Town. Only underground walkways. It took us 2.5 days to find a traffic light. - they had big big boxes of flour, sugar, noodles, rice, nuts, etc in the supermarket where you can only take what you need. - there are extra people in the fruit/vegetable area that are just there to weigh your stuff. For nothing else. I’ve seen that in South America too, but it still amazes me. - They wear all black (or sometimes some other dark color) and they look the same on the street. It seems no one wants or dares to stand out. - the language with their 4 sounds of ‚k‘ sounds so harsh that you think people are constantly fighting. - the bitcoin machines! What a cool thing! . But over all I wasn’t impressed but I liked it! It was cool that a lot of doors were open to look in the courtyards of some houses. The writing of the georgian letters is beautiful, the language isn’t. . Day 215 After a chilled morning and chores (emptying and refilling) we set off to Ávila. Ávila was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. It had complete medieval town walls which for €5 you can walk along the top of (only half is open). These walls are the largest walled enclosure in the world standing at 2156 metres with 87 towers and 9 gates! Lovely place to wander around with plenty of churches to look at and also the cathedral. Then we took a quick evening trip to Royal Palace of La Granja of San Ildefonso. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings after 1700 it’s free for EU citizens to enter so we thought we’d make the most of it! The palace had fabulous ceilings, another room had a fountain in and there were lots of paintings and statues. Very ornate and grand! The gardens were disappointing. It contains over 10 fountains all with different themes and none of them were working. There is no firm information we could find which informs when the fountains are on! All in all we wouldn’t go out of our way to visit and wouldn’t pay €9 but if you’re in the area of Segovia on a Wed or Thurs and have time it’s worth spending a few hours there.
