"Houston, we have a problem!". Toward the end of our USA trip, we visited the NASA Space Center in Houston, Texas, which offers several displays of NASA's space programs. This is also the location of the Apollo Mission Control Center. Meaning that the iconic message of the commander of the troubled Apollo XIII mission of 1970 ("Houston, we have a problem!") was addressed to this very location. The dimensions of these space artifacts are truly impressing. Also the effort made to put equipment and people into space. 1-2: Adapted Boeing 747 carrying a space shuttle. This was needed to test the re-entry of the shuttles into the atmosphere, and to transport shuttles that landed somewhere else back to Florida for the next start. 3-5: A basically complete Saturn V rocket, the three-staged rocket design used to put the Apollo Missions into space and on the Moon. 6. Apollo Mission Control Center 7. Lunar Rover, used in the Apollo 15-17 Missions to extend the exploration range on the Moon 8. It’s official: the first non-American to walk on the moon will be Japanese 🇯🇵. The announcement was made as part of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit to the US . The agreement signed between NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and his Japanese counterpart didn’t specify exactly which mission this would occur on (i.e. will it be Artemis 3, or a later one?) 🚀 . We’re in! The #umdspacesystemlab was accepted into the NASA 2024 Big Idea challenge, where participants are tasked with designing an inflatable system for lunar operations. We proposed AIRWHEEL: Auxiliary Inflatable Wheels For Lunar Rovers. AIRWHEEL consists of an inflatable wheel situated inside the hub of an outer rigid wheel. If a rover gets stuck in a loose section of regolith, it can inflate the inflatable wheels to help get itself out!
