Moving right along on the chicken coop run extension. Just a little more stonework to do, then we can fill with crushed stone and attach the wire. The door is almost done too. Then we can move the coop and attach to their new run, yay! Predator proof AND fabulous = happy hens 🐥 💛 Oh, and then of course there are plants to plant.... hydrangea border already went in in the Fall, then I have a climbing honeysuckle to provide some shade, a crabapple tree (for future shade once full grown), and I've always wanted a strawberry patch, so I think I'm going to do that as ground cover between the arena fence and back of the coop/run and let it go wild back there. Yum. 🍓 Oh, and then theres the stone wall with lilac patch and driveway sliding gate to build.... does it ever end....? nope! The chicken run extension is coming along..... of course I changed my mind (just to make things even more complicated!) and had to add a dormer gable off the side. It will have doors and be the "human-sized" entrance for feeding and cleaning the run. We moved it into place today and put it on corner stones to level it out. Ben will finish the stone wall along the perimeter and we'll fill with crushed stone for drainage. Then, the coop will move again to connect to the new run! We use 1/4 hardware cloth to make it predator proof and it'll offer the girls more space on a daily basis as they haven't had much free-ranging this summer due to hawks hanging around. #noharmfarm #luxurychickencoop #veganaf #diy #maine
Ben describes Fall as anxiety-inducing..... which is kinda true..... the last minute rush to get everything done and cleaned up before winter comes. But it's also a good motivator to get to those last few tasks that have lingered for too long. Some projects on the farm are.... chicken run extension....mailbox bracket, mailbox garden overhaul.....and veggie garden cleanup. Oh yeah, and there's that garden house to build that we got a building permit for over a year ago.... So yeah.... there's some anxiety here! The good news is that we haven't had a frost yet. Fresh water time for the babies! Each night, each brooder box gets two fresh bowls of water. One each filled with plain filtered water and one each filled with filtered water that contains special electrolytes and probiotics formulated for chickens. We place our babies water dishes on top of bakers cooking racks that we have positioned at the far end of each brooder box.
